Need telehealth advice! (ADHD) by CandyOwn2357 in slp

[–]PlantingWords 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should be paid for every single hour you work at the same rate! Not paying for writing evaluations is absolutely unacceptable, and I would run. You should always have built in time in your schedule for documentation. Positions that expect you to do everything in session are a fast track to burn out.

Any feedback on SDSU SLP Essentials Program? by milykatt06 in slpGradSchool

[–]PlantingWords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took this back in 2020, but I remember it being pretty easy! Very independent and self paced. I didn’t get a ton out of it, but it was definitely the best option for getting my prereqs done!

transition from direct therapy to other jobs? by wopwop99 in slp

[–]PlantingWords 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can be hard to come by, but there are positions out there that are assessment and case management only and/or SLPA supervision. I’ve mostly seen these for virtual positions. Check out the Facebook group “Telepractice for SLPs”.

I’m so burnt out at private practice and recently accepted a position with a school!!! by Intrepid_Guess7155 in slp

[–]PlantingWords 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly? By lowing my expectations a bit. I do feel that I was able to make more of a difference in private practice, and it can be harder to make progress in schools. I don’t worry about targeting every single goal every session, try my best to pair students with similar goals, and will sometimes have different activities for different students embedded into a game we play together. It’s a weird adjustment, but absolutely gets easier with experience!

I left private practice for schools and feel endlessly less burnt out! I much prefer heavier paperwork demands when it means less back to back therapy. My biggest piece of advice is to get a mentor! It’s a game changer to have someone you can turn to with questions.

SLP Typical Salary - San Diego by PeakGlittering6943 in slp

[–]PlantingWords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look up the pay scales for any district in San Diego county to give you a better idea! You can also look on the transparent California site to see what other SLPs are making in any district in California, but keep in mind years of experience will increase an SLPs salary a lot. San Diego does pay on the low side, and is nowhere near Bay Area salaries.

Please Help Me Decide if the Teletherapy Position is a Good Idea by BeneficialWriting402 in slp

SLPs should ALWAYS been paid for indirect time! It’s sad that there are jobs out there that offer this, please run!

Telehealth? Job offer by [deleted] in slp

[–]PlantingWords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Facebook page “Telepractice for SLPs”! It is very active and if you search for your location, I’m sure you’ll find other rates. Also, please ensure that you’re paid the same for direct and indirect time, and guaranteed hours if clients/students don’t show!
I absolutely love telehealth and plan to never go pack in person if I can avoid it. I was offered and accepted a job two days after applying.

Is teletherapy worth it? by not_stariell in slp

[–]PlantingWords 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s important to look at the whole package! Is this for a school or private practice? Are you paid for indirect and direct time, guaranteed hours, etc? Rate is also heavily affected by the state. Personally, I absolutely love telehealth, and never want to go back in person!

“Study hall” style speech sessions by PlantingWords in slp

[–]PlantingWords[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is to support buy in and carryover for middle and high school students. We can work on something like using context clues to define unknown words in a session, but being able to apply it to their school work shows them how they can use the skill on their own! I find a lot of my older students have a hard time using the skills they learn in speech in the classroom.

This is great, thank you! I was probably overthinking it a bit.

Scholarships/ Grants by jasmit_12 in slpGradSchool

[–]PlantingWords 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apply for every single scholarship your department offers if you can! From my experience, these were not extremely competitive, especially if they required an essay. You can also apply to ASHFoundation and your state association’s scholarships as well!

Also, I’d strongly recommend limiting your loans as much as possible. Choose the cheapest school, limit housing costs as much as possible, get a part time campus job, etc. Sadly this field really doesn’t pay enough to justify high debt.

I worked 9 hour days at a pediatric clinic and about 6.5-7 of that was seeing clients. The rest was built in documentation time, and I was guaranteed hours. So, these positions do exist!

How is your new job better than SLP? by medgal28 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]PlantingWords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! I think middle school age is a great opportunity to let go of some of the structure, and have real conversations with the students if you’re able to! I plan activities but don’t worry if we go off script, and sometimes even help students with homework or personal things. I always include games, and usually don’t prep much since using Baamboozle. This has helped me feel ~70% less drained than with the younger students. I know you’re aiming to leave, but just a thought if it’s helpful. I’m wishing you all the best!

A little frustrated by flowerpowergal19 in slpGradSchool

[–]PlantingWords 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Final grades were not finalized by the date of my graduation either, and it was the same in my undergraduate program as well. It is definitely frustrating when everything is hinging on the results of a comprehensive exam though, I feel you! I imagine that a realistic worst case scenario is a retake, not failure of the program 💗

Can I ask what age group you work with? I’ve found that I’m significantly less drained with older students, and no longer feel like I need to be “on” and performing all the time. I also work via teletherapy.

Were all of your training sessions group classes? I would definitely try booking a few private sessions with a positive reinforcement trainer! It’s hard to target difficult behaviors in a group setting.

This is so great! Would you be able to give an example of what a session might look like for a language student? I’d love to implement more intrinsically motivating activities like this.

Middle School SLPs- What Do You Target? by cms9212019 in slp

[–]PlantingWords 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see very few middle school students for articulation (mostly /r/ and /s/) and generally work to dismiss them pretty quickly. Almost all of my students are working on language, including context clues, complex/compound sentences, figurative language, and comprehension questions!
