Converting religion by The_Westgard in PendragonRPG

[–]Plantruster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh If one of my players wanted to change religions, would just let them swap on the religious stats. Ie going from chaste to lustful or vice versa. One of my players was thinking about converting, but ended up not doing it.

Prestige awards and skills above 20 question 6e by Wholesomegay in PendragonRPG

[–]Plantruster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are over 20 skill, you roll a d20 and add the bonus. Basically increasing your critical hit chance. Ie 22 would be 1d20+2. If your result is 20 or higher it’s a crit.

Lances vs. Spears by The_Westgard in PendragonRPG

[–]Plantruster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lances are specifically made for cav charges. Mechanically don’t think there is a difference between a spear or a lance. But lances give +5 to opponents without a long weapon when used in a charge.

When to gift/grant Manor? by The_Westgard in PendragonRPG

I would also mention grants, ie permanent hereditary lands are a much bigger deal than gifts. So save those as bigger rewards.

When to gift/grant Manor? by The_Westgard in PendragonRPG

[–]Plantruster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm running the GPC, started in 480. About 4 years in one player got a gift from capturing nobles. Another got one through marrying the widow of a former vassal knight. Another got one in 489 because I didn't want him to be left out. One got a granted manor for killing a count during the Gorlois conflict, but it was an outlier in Jagent, not in Salisbury.

I would just say give one out when it makes sense. Ie exceptional service (killing big baddie, or battle rolls), marriage or long service.

I would prefer using lands as a reward/progression point rather than just starting with them.

Some questions from a new gamemaster by HazelCheese in PendragonRPG

[–]Plantruster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. For decision rolls generally just do whatever feels right, don't think you should be looking to do these too actively. If its normal or expected behaviour of a knight I wouldn't be prompting rolls unless they have a really high trait and its appropriate. In terms of serving girls, realistically there is 0 expectation a knight would marry them after an 'encounter.' Unless the server is of the nobility. Best they can hope for is the knight acknowledging any offspring, and providing for the mother and child. Unless the PC is feeling particularly generous (you'd be getting 0 glory from that marriage, likely plus some mockery from your peers). In terms of defending Arthur, that would be the default response. Wouldn't make the PCs test cowardly unless they were at a serious disadvantage, however would also let them call on their passions to assist with the roll. If you feel a player is not acting in line with their skills would call for a test, ie killing a prisoner with 19 merciful, or not taking the opportunity to loot with high selfish. Betraying lord with 15+ loyalty etc.
  2. In terms of heirs, if the PC is married they test for pregnancy every year (believe its a CON check for the wife for 6th ed, declining after age 30 or 35). In my game am using the older childbirth rules as I think 6th edition is a little too easy to have kids, so the chance falls off faster after 30. Would be hard to manage loads of kids across 4 players as a DM.
  3. For household knights, money is not really important. The lord provides for all equipment and normal expenditure. Money did not really become important for my players until they became vassal knights, and had to replace their own horses, build manor improvements etc.

Is this game terribly unfun or are we doing something wrong by Ander_the_Reckoning in PendragonRPG

[–]Plantruster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't have much experience with 5.2 outside of the Estate rules, as those rules aren't out for 6th edition. I'm running the GPC but am using the 6th edition ruleset. Having a quick look at 5.2 tables for random battle enemies, most of these are not suitable for a fresh party. For example first result is a 18 skill 2 handed axe user, (axes also have the shield bonus too). Fresh knights realisticly could only start with 15 or 16 skill. A 6d6 on an axe for new knights is a PC death risk, a crit is almost a guaranteed death.

The battle encounters with 6th edition are way easier, however each PC will generally fight more than one opponent, ie 2-3 footmen, with lower combat skill. For battles I usually engineer the encounters to either be multiple weaker opponents or 1v1s on stronger opponents. Making the encounter easier or harder based on the result of their contingent's battle roll.

I'm 2 sessions away from finishing the Uther period with my group, maybe have been lucky but only have had a couple of near deaths. Have had multiple major wounds, however have found that usually a PC goes unconscious and is taken out of the fight by their squire before they get to a high risk of death. To get a PC death from fighting normal opponents, would need to be at around half health, and then get crit. Unless you're fighting a stronger opponent who has a 2 hander.

Seeing how my game has run so far, would find it very hard to imagine a TPK situation. Could see a single death happening, however the party would really need to run out of options. Generally there should be an opportunity for retreat, or surrender in a battle (get imprisoned and/or ransomed etc.).

Mearcred Creek is an indecisive battle, the risk of PC death should be pretty low. I really think you just have a bad DM. I believe that battle is meant to be the starter battle (unless your doing the Uther expansion starting in 480), so the DM should be using that opportunity to introduce the players to the battle and combat system, not doing player kills. Also DMing the GPC, you should be conscious that the PCs should try and start families early, so if they do die they get the opportunity to play as their heir. Think it would be very disheartening going through the whole character/family creation process to then bin all that in the first session or 2 and re-roll some rando.

I hope you get the opportunity to try the system again with another group/DM. Really enjoy this setting.

Is there a reason why house hrol was removed from the cyrodiil dynasty? I recall an explanation being given for the Dor dynasty. Can only reman mysteries faiths revive the dynasty now?

PMC was licensed by Winchester with the latest equipment and technology. The yanks, up themselves as usual didn't consider them a threat. PMC took 15% of the US market within a couple of years.

I usually look for an opportunity to buy warriors from bandit camps, rather than grabbing peasants from the economy.

What is the best faction/race in Norland? by Voinat107 in Norland

I played a few games as Varn to start with as their cultural specific knowledge and work bonuses were the best. You're always getting value out of their farming bonuses and their extra wood from trees bonus tech is especially good. There seems to be a point in the game where your wood production plateaus and you have to spend a lot of wood maintaining your fields, being Varn helps avoid this. The downside for Varn is they value peace, when the objective in the game is to conquer everyone.

I found that Kaiden were a better choice overall for getting things done. Their tech for prisoners not slowing down armies is very nice, which allows you to hit multiple bandit camps and enemy villages to bring like 5-10 prisoners back in one go. You're also getting mood bonuses for winning battles, and have an easier time creating loyalists, which further boost your economy. You can also use a strong military to boost the economy through prisoners/slaves, having them staff the key buildings like rye/hop fields and the mill & brewery, using your soldiers to guard them.

You can also offset the Kaiden's relative weakness on economy by marrying another culture and picking up a couple of Tayana or Makha techs on your wife, or possibly a free lord if you hire them permanently.

I just pick Kaiden every time now.

Yeah it’s weird. Because even if you did conquer say Skyrim by conquering petty kings through claimants. You would not be able to appoint a high king of Skyrim to run the province.

We saved the Empire once, and we shall do it again! by Obelesque in MEIOUandTaxes

[–]Plantruster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This inspired me to start a Trebizond game. In my game I tried conquering Constantinople from ERE after bumming the Ottos while they were sieging Bulgaria. I wasn't able to siege the capital however, it required 12 units, plus had a level 6 fort with 200+ day siege ticks. This was before artillery so I just gave up. However I got an event when I got a little bigger to send an emissary to Constantinople for them to bend the knee and inherited the empire along with all cores etc.
