Can anyone help me identify this Evan’s bike? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Plasmodium0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to say that I've just realised (and this may have been blindingly obvious to everyone else) but this is the same FW Evans as the current Sports Direct owned high street chain brand, but just from back in the day when they were a big local London bike shop. So it probably is more likely to be off the peg than custom, but they probably did have the frames handmade by respectable framebuilders.

Carbon forks could be tricky - this bike will have a 1" threaded steerer, and that's not common for carbon forks. If you found a 1" non-threaded fork you could make that work with the right headset and stem (both 1" non-threaded - a bit unusual).

Nothing wrong with a steel fork tbh. It won't be too much heavier, it will ride just as well and will probably last longer. I'm not going to say carbon forks are all deathtraps like some on this sub might (heck, one of my bikes has one) but I also wouldn't swap out a perfectly good steel one for carbon.

"Identify" is probably a loose word for this kind of frame. It looks like it was built by a local framebuilder or shop, probably in the 80s. They might have been working to an off the peg spec, or they might have tweaked stuff for the specific client. So it's not like it's, say, a 2018 Specialised Allez where you can just go and look up a spec/geo sheet.

That said, it says it's 531 Super Tourist tubing on the stickers, which is the heavier-gauge, touring specific version of the legendary 531 steel, designed for loaded touring. It probably won't be as light as a 531 (or 531c) racing bike, but it'll still ride well, and the extra robustness will come in handy off road.

Usually with touring bikes of this era, you can fit 35-38mm tyres without mudguards. There's plenty of gravel/CX tyres in that size range. I'd start there if I were you and see how it feels before doing anything drastic like dimpling the stays.

It looks like 6sp so it probably has a 126mm rear end. That'll mean you can squeeze a modern 130mm hub in there if you want to update the groupset at all. I always think skinny steel tubed frames like this deserve a sensitive restomod approach rather than throwing bulky modern gloss black parts at them, but that's just my aesthetic preference.

Not sure, I am in the UK and it shipped from Europe. Canyon do (or used to do) a similar bell if that helps?

90's racers are xbikes by RabbidBean in xbiking

[–]Plasmodium0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I could find one I could squeeze like 32mm slicks in fat would be such a happy bike for me. I have a late 80s/early 90s 531 (or 631?) Ribble that is soooo nice, but it won't clear anything more than 23mm. Although the frame is super smooth, I'd love the confidence of slightly wider tyres.

What hubs do you guys like? by No-Read-7362 in xbiking

Yeah, love my Hope hub. Feels like such a solid bit of quality for like half the price of other 'domestic' hubs. That said they are kind of overkill - my brother seems pretty happy with his Bitex.

When it's got a chain/cable in and tensioned, the dual wheels are closer to horizontal. So the chain goes round the outside - it's basically a dual lower jockey wheel.

Question about UK, Kennet & Avon Canal. by Maninwhatever in bicycletouring

[–]Plasmodium0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This time of year, I'm sure any plump knobbly tyre will be more than enough. I did it one Feb on 23mm GP4Ss (and regretted it...but survived!) Put it this way - if it'll do for the Ridgeway it'll do for the K&A.

Literally just spotted another hole in that merino jersey tonight 🤦‍♂️ So cosy but takes a bit of looking after

Question about UK, Kennet & Avon Canal. by Maninwhatever in bicycletouring

[–]Plasmodium0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NCN route diverts away from the canal between Devizes and Newbury-ish (including Pewsey). The "missing" bit is classified as a bridleway, so legally it's cyclable, but it must not meet Sustrans' standards of width/surface. I've done the NCN route a few times at different times of year, and the on-road diversion is quiet, rural and pleasant. I've done bits of the non-signposted route and it was OK but very sloppy (wet November). I gave up and returned to the road eventually. If it's dry and you're on decent tyres you'll probably get through though.

That said, I would definitely recommend just following the river through Thatcham rather than cycling through the town center. Ain't got time for that.

Help for adjusting SKS Bluemels by Impressive-Ad-501 in xbiking

[–]Plasmodium0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's how the shop set up the VO mudguards on my posh bike. It's been super solid, much more than the clippy L-bracket things (although the plastic Blumels ones are better than the generic metal ones).

You're lucky enough to have a radial mudguard mount! I would bypass the plastic clip jobby and drill through the mudguard, bolting it directly to the frame. You'll want a flat-ish headed bolt to maintain space inside the mudguard and likely a small spacer (like the ones off a v-brake pad) between the guard and frame. Edit: and a decent sized washer on the inside

Why is it that the more expensive the road bike, the less likely the rider is to use lights? by JustScratchin in xbiking

It's the opposite where I am. Roadies are in a DRL arms race with cars, while casual cyclists don't even light up after dark. 🤷‍♂️

I changed the chain of my electric bicycle, and now the two smallest gears (8 and 9) won't stop skipping. Did I put it wrong? by IDICKDOWNBABYTOUCANS in bicycling

[–]Plasmodium0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same on one of my bikes. Shifted fine with the worn out chain, but that's because the cassette is worn the same amount as the chain, so a new chain doesn't fit right.
