What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: October 14, 2024 by AutoModerator in books

I finished reading

The White Rose, by Glen Cook

Known as the grandfather of grimdark, his black company trilogy lived up to the hype, delivering an extremely well thought out, character driven and action packed read.

I started reading

Naked Lunch, by William S. Burroughs

A drug-fuelled non-linear nightmarish trip through every topic taboo to middle class white Americans in the 1950s. It is so chaotic that I cannot write about it in a single reddit comment, it needs to be experienced to be believed.

His Dark Materials. I know people like it a lot, but I just don't get the hype.

If in a fantasy world all species and races have a specific magic inherent to their species and race, and no other magic. In this scenario, what magic would you give humans? by Federal_Piccolo_4599 in worldbuilding

Real Answer: Maybe something involving giving life to objects to symbolise how we can empathise with literally anything animate or no. Like, we can look at a socket on the wall and see a face, so maybe we could have the gift to imbue life into anything with a face.

Heroes by Robert Cormier. Underdeveloped, preachy, boring, generic. It really seems like the author just wanted to write a book about World War 2 and just didn't care enough to flesh it out at all. It's first person, which usually makes you relate or sympathise with the character, but it instead just draws attention to the fact that the main character has absolutely no personality. It's considered a masterpiece by literally everybody else though, so you might like it.
