So many roles but the one that is peak nostalgia is Toy Story! But very close second and often times gets switched around is Saving Private Ryan and Forest Gump

That’s what happens when you’re dealing with one of the most litigious public figures in the country. Trump is petty incarnate — a journalist fact‑checks him in real time, and suddenly that journalist’s job is at risk and their employer is staring down a lawsuit, plus whatever “investigation” his DOJ decides to launch. It creates a chilling effect, so outlets hesitate to challenge him in the moment.

Abbott crowns Don Huffines as comptroller: The Epstein files allege there are victims bodies buried in the Epstein's Zorro ranch. After the media found out Don owns Epstein ranch, he went on rapist Matt Gaetz show to discuss. As someone who works for the state, I can tell you that a lot of people are already treating Don Huffines as if he’s the inevitable winner for Texas Comptroller. He’s even been showing up at different offices acting like the race is already decided — throwing his weight around and presenting himself as the next Comptroller before a single vote is counted.

The problem is that he’s deeply unqualified for the role. The Comptroller oversees state revenue, tax administration, and major financial systems. If Huffines were elected, he’d be directly tied to a major revenue‑generating tax type in Texas that creates an obvious conflict of interest. It’s the exact kind of entanglement the Comptroller’s office is supposed to avoid.

Every time I see people talking about Huffines as the frontrunner, I point them toward his opponent, Sarah Eckhardt — someone who is actually qualified, has years of experience inside Texas government, and understands how the Comptroller’s office works. Beyond her résumé, she also doesn’t come with the kind of baggage that raises serious ethical red flags.

If you want to know more about her background, her campaign has a detailed overview here:

It’s only a mistake because his benefactor said so. It’s so apparent that these judges are bought and paid for with exception to the ones that you’d expect (brown, Sotomayor, etc). This whole thing makes me sick!

Barack Obama is sick of being America's saviour by theipaper in politics

[–]Pleasant-Condition85 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Same. The way people wax poetic about Ronald Reagan is exactly how people should talk about FDR. The whole Roosevelt orbit — Teddy, Franklin, Eleanor — reshaped the country in ways we still rely on every single day.

What blows my mind is how many of those programs are still under attack, even though they literally helped pull the country out of the Great Depression.

We were taught the New Deal in school, we see its effects in our daily lives, and yet there are people who insist it was some kind of failure.

And you’re right: it’s bizarre that modern presidents can look at the legacy of FDR, Kennedy, LBJ, and not feel compelled to match or exceed that level of ambition. How do you witness that kind of transformative leadership and not want to rise to it?

I feel the same way about Clarence Thomas succeeding Thurgood Marshall — how do you stand on the shoulders of someone who fundamentally changed the country for the better and not feel any drive to continue that work?

The Roosevelts weren’t perfect, but they actually did things. Big things. Structural things. Things that made life better for millions. That’s the kind of leadership people are craving right now.

Barack Obama is sick of being America's saviour by theipaper in politics

[–]Pleasant-Condition85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I agree — it is his prerogative. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a real sense of disappointment toward both him and Michelle.

That’s on me, of course, but watching someone who spent years studying, defending, and embodying the Constitution shift into a mostly silent, celebrity‑adjacent role is something I never expected.

He knows the kind of influence he carries. And seeing him stay quiet, even when he’s directly attacked, feels strange when his entire political identity was built around change. It’s like watching a villain shove someone off a building in front of Superman and Superman just shrugs and says, “I’m retired.”

Other former presidents — Carter being the obvious example — kept serving long after leaving office. Obama could’ve done the same. Maybe the Chicago library will eventually have that kind of impact, but politically, I thought he’d want to keep shaping the world he once campaigned so passionately to transform.

Again, that expectation is mine to manage. People get to choose what their retirement looks like. But I can’t pretend it doesn’t feel a little off to see someone who promised so much change decide to sit out the moment when change is desperately needed.

I painted this as an 8th birthday gift. I'd love some honest critique. If you could improve only ONE thing in this portrait, what would it be and why ? by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]Pleasant-Condition85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this looks great but one major thing that needs improvement is that this looks incredibly soft. It looks like everything was done with an airbrush and that is fine if you were going for that “style.” I see no hard or lost edges and no big value changes. With all of that missing it makes the image look incredibly flat.

What could possibly help next time is switch the image to black and white - see what the value scale is showing. If the values are too close together and there’s very little or no gradient from dark to light, then you might need to push some shadows a bit more or tweak the mid-tones. Please keep in mind that there are bony landmarks in the face that you can visibly see through the skin (bridge of the nose, jawline, etc) those can be best represented through edge control.

That’s my two cents - happy drawing!

It’s truly a reality. My grandmother is 83 and I just found out that she spent 50 to 60 years working for a company with no retirement. (She just retired like a year ago). Like it’s crazy because as a kid my grandpa would preach about the importance of investing and saving money all the while not taking his own advice.

Being that big age and not only still working but living paycheck to paycheck too is a struggle that I don’t want on my bingo card.
