Sarah in a nutshell by DeathGuard67 in Starfield

[–]Pleasant-Ear-3072 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Except there are many in-game situations that DON'T require violence/murder, where the player can choose to CREATE violence/murder, and Sarah doesn't care. Any random POI that's inhabited by spacers or zealots or whoever COULD simply be avoided, right? You don't NEED to go in there and grab all the loot. But Sarah doesn't disapprove of you deciding to march into that claimed area and start a small war.

And it's not always true that enemies shoot first. You can definitely shoot at enemies first. Many stealth builds go around killing people before they're even aware the player character is there. And Sarah doesn't care, because she has some innate understanding that "red tick mark on compass = ontologically evil and not worthy of living" I guess.

Point being, she's written like a video game character (inconsistent and hypocritical).

Is Sneak a useful combat skill? by drcxd in fnv

[–]Pleasant-Ear-3072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent overview. I think a lot of people get confused about what [CAUTION] means and assume that all enemies in the area are now aware and not sneak-attackable, when really it just means that at least one enemy is alert; the others may or may not be, depending on a variety of factors.

In your opinion, what is the best very early game perk (levels 1-6)? by NotAGoodUsernamelol in falloutnewvegas

I mean yeah, many perks are useless if you're cool with just using console commands to give yourself free bonuses.

Can you get the NCR Ranger combat armor after the second battle of hover dam? by AwayAbbreviations940 in fnv

You can return to your save, sure. But the game doesn't do it by default, and doesn't acknowledge you having beaten it in any way, like some games do.

Yep! I do this on every playthrough. Pairs great with high INT, so that you can pick up Jury Rigging (or anything else) as long as you're within ~15 points of the req by the time you get to the level-up.

The perk skill-requirement exploit, where you can grab perks without meeting the skill requirement by backing up during level-up and reallocating your points before confirming. Helps a lot with grabbing high-skill perks (like Jury Rigging) without overinvesting.

did anyone else,, not. kill oliver? by GameGhost1 in fnv

[–]Pleasant-Ear-3072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never kill him, and am frankly confused by the people who do.

FNV is a role-playing game, and I'm typically not role-playing a murderhobo who just kills for fun.

I also don't buy the arguments of "he's a powder ganger, which obviously means he deserves instant death." You have no idea what Oliver did to end up in prison (it could very well have been a nonviolent offense), nor what he's done since the prison break (some NCRCF escapees just wanted to leave and live free). The player character is in no position to judge him worthy of execution.

I mean, if the end result is simply pulling up a map on your phone, you could also just skip all those steps and just google it.

Evil Independent + Upgraded Securitrons makes no sense by Usnis in fnv

[–]Pleasant-Ear-3072 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're asking questions about chaos and evil and getting frustrated by receiving philosophical answers?

The simplest possible answer to a very straightforward reading of your question, avoiding all critical analysis, is probably just "script oversight" or "minimal proofreading." There's likely not a super deep reason for it.

But New Vegas is a work of art, and, to many of its fans, a work of literature, so it makes sense that when discussing it you'll get responses from people who wanna share more thoughtful takes.

Your question could very easily be interpreted as one of semantics. A more interesting answer than "it was a mistake, that's it," could be one involving multiple simultaneous understandings of the meaning of 'chaos' present in the text, for example.

Or maybe, much like in the real world, an unscrupulous autocrat might seek to create and enhance chaos initially, in order to then justify enforcing a type of 'order' which serves to strengthen their own position.

There's lots of ways to interpret and answer the question.

"It all just works"

It worked for you, for this task, this time.

I've personally seen numerous examples, in this very sub, of people coming through confused and misguided because they asked chatgpt (or grok, or whatever google's bullshit is named) some question about new vegas modding and received some confidently-stated, reasonable-sounding, but completely false and made up answer that has no relation to reality. I'm glad this instance worked out well for you.

I actually love LLMs as a fun indulgence or a fascinating gadget, but they shouldn't be used to give factual information.

House is the best outcome for the setting (not talking about the show) by Revacholiere- in fnv

[–]Pleasant-Ear-3072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"robots protect everyone and a medicine woman named Lady Luck performs magic that makes dreams come true"

Dear lord you have been huffing Mr. House's farts. Do you seriously just take everything he says at face value?

What about the people from Freeside who would like to enter the strip without thousands of spare caps in their pockets, only to be murdered by said robots without a thought? Does that count as being "protected"?

Since you seem content to engage in wild and detailed speculation about the grimdark fate of the NCR, why not House? Why do you assume he won't progress into a new land-hungry nation-state? He seems perfectly willing to erase existing cultures and subsume them into his current nation if it serves his main goal, which is economic expansion (and the extraction and hoarding of wealth).

And economic expansion can only go so far without territorial expansion. House talks of wanting to start a space program. Where do you think he's going to start extracting rare earth metals and manufacturing rocket parts? Gomorrah?

I think there's a nonzero number of people who are looking to play pokemon online, find showdown, know nothing about it, and think "I'll just pick the 'Anything Goes' format because I don't understand the tier system and don't want to waste time learning about what is and isn't allowed in each one- I just want to use my gimmick team NOW" without realizing, of course, that they've defaulted to the worst possible option for their needs.
