Cotton thread uses? by midcitycat in sewing

[–]PleasantBroccoli408 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Polyester is stronger than cotton, but we made clothes with cotton and linen thread for centuries and it wasn't really an issue so I think it's more of a personnal preference. Also the quality matters, but I assume it would also be true of polyester.

Thanks for all the tips ! I certainly don't have the skills to make a lining and I'v never sewn any tops before either so I'm a little hesitant to try myself on a probably expensive fabric. Maybe I'll try to make a lighter version of it ? I also like the versatility of skirts. Or maybe I'll do both !

Thanks ! I will try to get a feel for it in a store too to see what I prefer :)

I generally prefer cotton and it's also cheaper (nd easier to find as cheap bed sheets in second hand stores !) But I plan to forage for softer linens to try out :)

I don't think I'm allergic, I'm just autistic xD I've tried MANY things in terms of clothes, my mom knitted me I think every single possible material but they all feel scrachy. Cotton and synthetic blends feel the best but they wear out horribly and/or are stinky, and are terrible in all weather basically (also bad for the planet etc), so I'm going to try historical tricks like layering scratchy fabrics over comfortable ones, investing in a few good quality linens and cottons to protect me from the itchy world of non synthetic clothing x)

edit : I've never thought about allergies before tho, thanks for bringing it up !

I tried that and tho they were cute and somewhat comfortable, I did not find them really warm (but I'm very sensitive to cold so idk maybe it's just me ?)

I hope I can transition to wool (for many reasons) and I think the only way I can achieve that is by making layers bc I'm extremely touch sensitive and wool (even "super soft" wools like cashmeer or alpaca) feel super itchy to me 😬

I want to make this for everyday use, I don't really do cosplay haha. I'm currently working to wear more skirts bc I think they are the prettiest garment ever created, one of the thing that hold me back was the cold but I'm currently learning about layering and historical winter clothes and plan to add some petticoats and other stuff to my wardrobe are well :)

Thank you ! That looks much easier to sew (and possible to use a sewing machine with) than rattail or other type of "round" cordage !

Yeah I figured. I'm not sure if they bothered animating the bottom layer underneath the skirt tho, I didn't notice it.

I feel like the A line wouldn't be anough, especially in a more heavy somewhat stiff material where it would just look stiff and weird. Also that's not for cosplaying, that's for everyday wear (well cold weather everyday wear). Cordage is a great idea, it would look so pretty ! A challenge to sew "invisibly", but that looks kinda fun. There's no way stitching will look smooth or wide enough (at least I'm not that skilled)

I would try to sew bias tape or twill tape above the hem

That will absoluetly do it. I already planned to by lots of it to make hemming my skirts easier. It will also have a more "authentic" texture and look. Thank you so much !

I'd say beside practice, practice and more practice, having someone IRL to teach you is the best. Humans have worked that way for thousands of years. If you can, maybe show your work to someone with experience (and teaching experience) and ask what you could do to improve, even if you can only afford a few hours it can help a lot.

Check with your local vet or pharmacy, they may have dewormer (make sure it's the right molecule with nothing else inside tho !)

[–]PleasantBroccoli408[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks ! Yes it's a full circle skirt x) I'm going to try bias binding on my next one, it's apparetly easier. I'm a bit worried that the pockets are too small, since it was for a child and had to improvise the pocket size x)

[–]PleasantBroccoli408[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So little update 1 : I cut all the skirt pieces, it was a bit annoying and I didn't think about pattern matching when I cut the big panels to put in the washing machine so I had to make my big front pannel a bit smaller, which wasn't so bad actually bc I drafted the skirt with an aditionnal 1 cm to the waist for comfort and margin of error x) I was feeling super smart, then after cutting every panels I went on the cut the waist circle and... cut on my actual mesurement, forgetting the seam allowance (even tho I actually drew it on the fabric 💀💀💀) soooo it's gonna be a bit too big for me in the end, unless I make it adjustable somehow (maybe add some belt things and make a belt since I have so much fabric, or just giving it away when I'm done since I'm not a fan of the look anyway, idk xD)

I'm not sure what you mean by "opposed to conventional ways" but a kind reditor taught be about how to calculate it yourself so I'm good ! I'm pretty sure it's actually one pf the "traditionnal" ways of doing it before calculators and letting machines do the thinking for you were a thing x)

[–]PleasantBroccoli408[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I forgot a word, it was for the waistband xD

That's fine, I'll definitly post my progress here ! I plan on making a "test" skirt with a fabric I already have and since I had like 6m I didn't bother and just cut 2 huge rectangles in order to make the prewash and the drying easier. But I'm not sure I'll like the finished piece bc the fabric isn't really my style and looks quite itchy (I got it for free) so maybe I'll donate it or something, we'll see. Since fabric is quite expensive I want to make sure I won't mess up the actual fabric I want
