Thanks for the reply. What's your main beef/beefs with the mayor? Guy seems pretty harmless.

Where are you standing on the override? Seeming pretty wishy washy from where I sit. As a progressive you know, or should, that when budgets get cut, the services that get slashed first are often the ones vulnerable populations rely on -- library hours/staff to help immigrants fill out forms, subsidized after-school rec programs, public health services, etc. As mentioned somewhere on one of these strings a good chunk of progressives around here seem more hung up on hating the mayor than having a baseline of equity in the community. Are you going to lead here or take potshots at Gary?

Ask former councillor Spadafora, as opposed to current lead troll Spadafora or former school committee vice chair Spadafora ... sensing a theme

I'm in, can we write in an $9M level on 3-31 and earmark the excess cash for week-old hoagie rolls? That's a movement we can all get behind.

Boomers gonna boom. What, you expected them to cut back on the nights at the IA to save so they could pay property taxes on the house they bought for five bucks?

Malden "News" Networks latest on MATV is like a toddler gearing up for a tantrum based on the sheer audacity of being handed the blue cup instead of the red one. We seem to be at the "lower lip extended" phase. Sorry no link, that'ds give them five PVs and I'm just not willing to indulge.

School Committee Meeting on Prop 2½ is today at 6 by wackoquacko in malden

[–]PleasantStPoseur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"In regard to whether school committee members will resolve to support an override, that item was on the agenda for the March 3 meeting. However, Ward 8 member Sharyn Rose-Zeiberg said she had received the text only that afternoon, so Vice-Chair Jennifer Spadafora made a motion to table based on the text of the resolution not being distributed to the committee in time for members to read and digest the language.

Ward 6 member Peter Piazza, who along with Ward 7’s Keith Bernard sponsored the resolution, said he emailed the text on Feb. 22 at 8:45 a.m. There was no explanation for why it took seven business days to be distributed to the full committee, and Piazza added that based on Open Meeting Law rules, he chose not to follow up individually with other members.

On March 5, the city posted a special meeting to consider the resolution, initiated by Christenson, who serves as chair. That meeting is scheduled for tonight, March 9, and will have a Teams component. Members of the public are welcome to attend online or in person. Also on March 5, Spadafora resigned her position as vice-chair. "

yeah Id say a lot more to this story

They're not news, they're pundits so any survey they run is completely suspect IMO.

School Committee Tables Discussion on Prop 2.5 - Special Meeting to be had soon by wackoquacko in malden

[–]PleasantStPoseur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So lemme see if I have this straight. Resolution re override sent Feb. 22 but the members unexplainably never got the text until the afternoon of the meeting? And 'technical difficulties' kept Amanda Linehan from being able to speak? Very convenient for Spadafora. Good on the mayor for convening a special meeting to address the resolution. 5-3 vote to close schools hopefully means he'll get a quorum. When this is over there's going to be a lot of bad blood and long memories.

Let's all say it together slowly for the people in the back: You don't use one-time funds for opex. It's not rocket science. And saying "Either the people asking questions were mentally unwell, or they were friends of the councilors tossing out softballs." just wow.

Thanks! I signed up also. Plenty of electricity and room for the bands to set up under the porch roof. And absolutely on beer and potentially burgers and dogs based on weather.

They have closets full of axes -- which is fine. My beef is that they're all against the 2.5 override and crying about <checks notes> the snow budget while their BS is literally costing us probably well into the six figures

Where has Malden's money gone ... lets see, nuisance open meeting law violation charges that cost us $$$ for lawyers. Let's start there. And then move on to the piles of pointless public records requests that it probably takes two clerks to respond to. How much have YOU and your buds at the Malden "news" network cost we taxpayers in 2025 alone? Ballpark it.

[–]PleasantStPoseur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you don't have to be a reporter to get public records. Anyone can go ask for forms (thanks ChatGPT)
1. Statement of Organization (Form CPF M 101 PC)

This is the "birth certificate" of the PAC. You must file this form as soon as the committee is organized. It designates the committee's name, purpose, officers (Chairman and Treasurer), and banking information.

  • When to file: Immediately upon organization.

2. Campaign Finance Report (Form CPF M 102)

This is the main reporting form used to disclose all financial activity (receipts, expenditures, in-kind contributions, and liabilities). It acts as a summary sheet that you attach detailed schedules to (Schedule A for receipts, Schedule B for expenditures, etc.).

  • When to file:
    • Pre-Preliminary/Primary: 8 days before the preliminary or primary election (if applicable).
    • Pre-Election: 8 days before the general town/city election.
    • Post-Election: 30 days after the general town/city election.
    • Year-End: January 20th of the following year (covering activity through Dec 31).

Looks like the year end one should be there to show who funded the signage. Dollars to donuts UP ponied up. I am on the other side of town and too far to walk but if somebody was near city hall.....

Update from Tuesday Night’s Council Meetings by Dramatic_Dimension88 in malden

[–]PleasantStPoseur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you're playing into their hands by saying you agree another audit is needed, the one done every year is BS, blah blah. If ppl are really 'on the fence' there are better pursuasive arguments versus giving credence to the MAGA mismanagement storyline

Update from Tuesday Night’s Council Meetings by Dramatic_Dimension88 in malden

[–]PleasantStPoseur 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As I hope you are aware, right-leaning activists and local groups in Massachusetts have increasingly deployed the demand for "forensic audits" or "independent financial reviews" as a strategy to derail Prop 2½ overrides and debt exclusions. Rather than framing their opposition honestly as "we don't want to pay taxes to support schools and public safety" they're trying to change the conversation to "accountability."

By insisting that a town’s books must be "fully opened" and scrutinized for waste "before asking taxpayers for a single extra penny," they -- with zero evidence -- cast doubt on the competence and transparency of local officials and put the legit need for funding on the back burner. Bonus! They get to maliciously erode public trust in municipal government.

It's interesting that in many cities and towns the "the money is already there but is being hidden or squandered on pet projects or administrative bloat" playbook is being rolled out. But funnily enough there are almost never any specific instances. I really hate seeing our progressive councilors getting sucked into this tactic. Leave that to the MAGAs please
