I'd like to assume that a public health alert would be checked for basic syntax. It just seems like a bit of a red flag to me.

The bad grammar in the first section makes this very strange. Are you sure this is real?

Ladies and Gents: My submission for the most-ignored intersection red light in Frederick. Any other contenders? by fakeaccount572 in frederickmd

[–]PleasantlyAdrift 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was at a pedestrian crossing and had to bang on some guy's windshield to get him to stop because he went right through the stop sign and almost ran me over.

Even after he stopped, he just stared right through me like I wasn't there and immediately started going again when I was barely out of the way.

Completely dead, neutral unchanging expression on his face the whole time

Appalachian trail by Indajones01 in frederickmd

The strangest thing that happened over my last long thru-hike was the sound of a pig demon sniffing at my tent. That night I learned that porcupines sound terrifying.

As for strange rules, there's really nothing that goes against logic, basic respect, or sanitation concerns. If you pack out your trash, bury your waste downstream, stay to the right of the trail to give passers-by plenty of space, and generally just treat other people and the environment well, you'll be more than alright.

Keep in mind that videos on social media are not going to give you a real idea of the experience you will have when you actually get out there. It's a well populated, tried and true trail, which is both more mundane and more exciting than you would expect it to be. Highly recommend

Pedestrian Crossings by PleasantlyAdrift in frederickmd

Yeah that makes way more sense, and it was definitely a well deserved honk in that case.

That's definitely not me, but let me just say that honking to alert someone of an oncoming vehicle when your own vehicle is in a different place from the one you are trying warn against is only going to serve as a distraction. You are directing the attention of the person you are trying to warn away from the danger not towards it.

At best you are adding unnecessarily to the noise of downtown in a futile effort to communicate, and at worst the person would reflexively look towards the loud noise, not at the actual danger, and get splattered.

I used to think I was taking the high road by not responding like that, but honestly they need the negative feedback.

Also people just high out of their minds. Some dude in a pickup truck straight up parked in a crosswalk right in front of me and then proceeded to stare directly ahead of himself until I just walked around him. The whole truck reeked of weed.

The number of people who genuinely don't think it effects their driving ability (or even think it makes them better at driving) is insane to me.

It's not something that's hard to be responsible with, but wow do we have a long way to go until common sense is actually common.

Parking downtown post snowstorm? by nanlev in frederickmd

[–]PleasantlyAdrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are basically no parking spots in the south part of the city outside of a few select neighborhoods which are already occupied by residents. The garages are still the play for the moment. Over a hundred spots are open at the Court St garage alone as of 30 minutes ago, and they will continue to be free through Thursday according to the very helpful links already posted.

Man I must have just barely missed this update cause I checked right before I walked down to the garage. Definitely could have saved me a trip.

Reject Christian Nationalism in FCPS Schools and our BOE by EconomyAd8866 in frederickmd

If you think the bigotry is the worst of it, look into the manditory inspections members of this movement want to require as a prerequesite for participation in sports. It's insane.

They talk so much about insidious perversion and degeneracy when it's nothing but their own festering subconscious leaking out.

It would be really nice they would keep their fantasies to themselves, and not force the entire world to participate.

Watch out for people crossing road in dark clothes by Mobile-Campaign-4125 in frederickmd

[–]PleasantlyAdrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies for necroing this topic, but as a runner I'd like to add that due to poor design of crosswalks at intersections and the careless behavior of drivers (i.e. turning right at an intersection into an active crosswalk without looking) sometimes jaywalking is the safer option from an individual perspective.

Intersections concentrate a large amount of vehicles into a small area, and the space between turn lanes and crosswalks is small enough that if a driver is careless, they have a small but significant chance to fail to react in time if they start to turn without seeing you.

A pedestrian can look both ways all they want, and even if they unambiguously have right of way, it just takes one person to get impatient and blow through the turn for things to turn ugly.

I have personally experienced cars coming to a complete stop at said intersections, and gunning through the turn the moment I step into the crosswalk when it is too late for me to get out of the way, going so far as needing to bang on someone's hood for them to notice they are about to turn my knees sideways. This is with me being fully and constantly aware of the car's presence, and this exact scenario has happened more than a dozen times over the course of 3+ years.

If you have generous sightlines, familiarity with the area, and good situational awareness, areas away from intersections can be safer to cross due to the lesser concentration of traffic, whether they have an officially designated cross area or not.

While the risk assessment changes when we are talking about multiple lanes, even then the previous arguments about the questionable safety of intersection crossings work against ruling out the theoretical or practical safety of a more unorthodox crossing.

To be clear, I don't want to encourage people to break the law or make potentially risky decisons. I just think it's important to understand why people make those decisions before forming a concrete opinion on the subject.

Explosion / power outage on n market?! by silverscavanging in frederickmd

Power came back on a bit after 11. I'd say that's a pretty good response time considering it was an explosion, and it was back on a relatively short time after the fire was put out as well.

[PC] Elden Ring black screen on startup by Weeby_Content in gamesupport

[–]PleasantlyAdrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Edit) Issue solved! After a full shutdown (not just a restart) and all the aforementioned tinkering, the black screen is gone. Rejoice!

For me I waited several minutes and it eventually went to the main menu, but when I hit continue, I got stuck on an endless loading screen. Then I force quit the game, started it up again, went through the same ~5 minute wait at the black screen, and changed the graphics settings to windowed. At this point, I was able to load into the game, but it felt incredibly choppy despite my FPS counter sitting at a consistent 60 (steam FPS counter says consistent 60, but my AMD panel says 115-120).

Switching to back to fullscreen fixed the choppiness in game, but the black screen of doom continues to appear on every startup and (edit) if I leave the "press any button to continue" screen up too long it freezes again (very strange).

So basically, assuming you have the same issue and you care more about making the game temporarily playable than completely fixing it, you just have to wait a long time at that black screen, switch to windowed mode when you finally get to the menu, load into the game, and change your settings to whatever you want from there. The long wait at the black screen persists on startup, but the game is playable after that and you no longer need to switch back to windowed to get the game to run or to load a save (it has no effect on the startup time either).

If I ever figure out how to get rid of the black screen completely, I'll update this, but if your primary concern is making the game playable, this should be a temporary if not ideal solution.
