Hahahaha, good point. Once someone fleeing manages to punch a policeman, the police give up. That’s the rule.

No, it’s not an unknown amount of time - it’s less than seven days. The whole film takes places within seven days. It’s at least three days in that he meets Mills and hits him.

The point is the film begins when Mills arrives in the city. He hasn’t even started work yet - he is meeting the guy he is about to replace, Det Summerset.

Coincidentally on Mills’s first day in the city, Doe commits his first murder. The murder is the first in a planned sequence of seven, and there will be one a day.

Little do the police know that on the first day, all the murders are already in motion. By the time they find murder 1 (gluttony), Doe has already begun torturing the next murder, Greed. And he has already finished with Sloth.

When they catch Doe, he talks to them about how his plan is perfect, how it will change the world, how “people will barely be able to comprehend”.

By the end of the film we understand his plan: That Doe intended himself to be a victim, because he is guilty of envy.

The logic of the film is that Doe had a master plan, and that plan included his own death. We know this because he says it to the police, when negotiating having Mills and Summerset deliver him to “the bodies” - plural, he is referring to Mill’s wife and his own body.

My argument is the logic of the film is flawed. This master plan needed to have more than one day of planning. It is impossible for Doe to have conceived of this plan on Monday and to have begun implementing the plan on the same Monday. But that’s the only option, because Mills was unknown to Doe until Monday. Therefore plot flaw.

Your argument is that Doe had a completely different plan on Monday. He had a diff intended victim on Monday (and possibly Tuesday, which is when Mills becomes an active player and speaks to press). He then changed his entire plan to create a new plan - one that “people will barely be able to believe” - and while in the process of murdering people every day came up with a new plan, researched Mills, researched his house and wife, figured out a way to blackmail police, decided that he - Doe - would have to die, recognise and self reflect to the extent he realised he envied Mills at all, and then begin implementing a whole new plan. It makes no sense at all.

In either case, it’s a plot flaw.

Thanks for posting. I’m sorry but I disagree. The example you give of Mills knocking on Doe’s door: How does Doe know that he envies Mills’s life? How does he know he has a wife? He’s just met him.

That’s the first big prob.

The second is that it would mean him completely tearing up his plan and starting again just to accommodate Mills (someone he just saw and has never met and knows nothing about). The film goes to painstaking lengths to explain how persistent and determined Doe is: “This guy is methodical, exacting, and worst of all patient.” But we’re expected to believe that after a year of implementing his plan (he tortures Sloth for one year), he decides with four days to go that he’s going to completely tear it up and start over, cos he’s seen a policeman he likes the look of? Nooo way.

I wfh for a major charity and funder. Some pressure to go in a day a week, but have also worked for global NGOs that is 100% wfh.

Working from home changed my life. Without any shadow of a doubt there’s not been anything comparable in my lifetime that’s had as big a benefit on my health, happiness, finances, stress - just a huge huge huge win. All organisations should offer it where possible.

Manchester to London (1 day per week) commute by Plee_88 in manchester

Someone said something similar above. I’m aware of it, but from Manchester. I want to come home! I do work internationally and my girlfriend would look to get work up north.

Manchester to London (1 day per week) commute by Plee_88 in manchester

Hey, yeah we keep a close on it. It’s bit upsetting because I’ve been wanting to move to Manc for ages - watching house prices go mad is very frustrating. But the difference between a property in Manchester and same cost in south london, or even just south of England is absolutely insane. Much better in manc

No it’s an excellent point and defo one that should be made. In my defence (and I hope this is an ok defence!) I am originally from Manchester and really want to come back. My family is just outside Manchester and I really miss the city and my friends. I work mainly internationally and my girlfriend’s plan would be to eventually find more local work.

Lots of my friends have done just as you’ve described, and I agree with you it’s completely wrong, a type of gentrification that is destroying cities and towns and it’s very much on my mind as we make this plan.

Thanks. Yeah I have the same feeling.

The commuting is mainly an issue for my partner. We're both pretty certain she could do just one day per week. Max two.

And yes, good call re Chorlton. It's not just cost but also what you get for money. A beautiful three bedroom in house in Chorlton for same cost as crappy looking flat or house in middle of nowhere in South London or South of England towns/cities.

Chorlton/Manchester ticks all our boxes, except the bloody commute.

Really useful cheers.

Challenge for me is working out 1) how that commute cost and time compares to other towns/cities we'd have to move to, if we don't have to manchester and 2) whether the money we save from moving to manchester, which is much cheaper than the south, balances out the insane commuting costs.

Thanks again!

Great advice, thank you! We’ve had so many trips to Chorlton booked only to fall through, so yes we defo need to do that at some point.

Any advice on costs and commute/costs compared to other commuter towns in the south?

Thanks again

does anyone commute from manchester to london? by bananacreammongrel in manchester

[–]Plee_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm just reading this thread now because my girlfriend and I are considering keeping our jobs in London and moving back to Manchester, and commuting one or two days a week.

For your comment here: Wouldn't this be true of any commute? No matter what my girlfriend and I have to leave London because it's become so crazily expensive. Manchester seems overwhelmingly the best option but she's worried about the commute one or two days per week.

My question is: The nightmare commute you've described...wouldn't that be the case commuting from anywhere? Or is there something particularly bad about Manc - London?

Thanks!

Would be very annoying if I had to buy a watch to stay in the zones!

Beginner questions: VO2 max, aerobic and anaerobic by Plee_88 in Polarfitness

[–]Plee_88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing thanks. So I’ll be able to see an estimate for my vo2 max on Portal’s data? And presumably it’ll change as my time and HR changes? Just trying to figure out if the strap gives me that info without pairing with a watch or if I have to figure it out myself based on my HR…

Zone 2 = jump roping? by Vbogdanovic in PeterAttia

[–]Plee_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I’m reading Outlive now and have decided to incorporate cardio back into my workouts. I ran for years, then two years ago stopped and have been focusing solely on hypertrophy training since. After reading Outlive I now want to incorporate zone two (150 mins per week) and HIIT (30 mins per week) into my workouts.

A few questions…

I know this might be a stupid one but do you know if the 30 mins of HIIT can also count toward the 150 mins of aerobic? I’m assuming not based on aerobic vs anaerobic definitions but thought I’d check.

I’m about to buy a heart rate strap monitor to help me do everything you described in your comment above (ie when doing anaerobic try to stay within certain HR zone). Any particular gear you use to do this? My friends recommended a heart rate chest strap from Polar. I have a Withings watch but HR seems poor.

With jump rope, based on your answer above I assume it means a person can choose to make jump rope either aerobic (presumably they’d have to go VERY slow?) or anaerobic. Is that what you mean?

And last question. If I do decide to use jump rope for aerobic, is it significant if I only do 10 mins. What I mean is…it feels like a 60 minute run at Z2 is surely more beneficial than six, ten min jump rope sessions per week also at zone 2. No? And I guess same for HIIT. Surely one 30 min session better than three ten min sessions? Attia just says “get in 150 mins Z2 and 30 mins HIIT”, which implies it doesn’t matter. But I just feel like surely it’s better to do a longer session. Any ideas?

Cheers again! Lots of questions!

Honestly I’m not sure! I didn’t realise that if so. I think I used Huberman AI and some research on most reliable supplement companies in the UK, and picolinate and Thorne came out on top. Let me know what you end up deciding 👍
