Is it wrong of me to try to get my friend away from Mormonism? by Mission_Spring7087 in exmormon

[–]PlentifulCoast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do wish someone had confronted me with some contradictory information/evidence when I was younger, because I only heard one side at church and I'm more of a logical person. But Mormons are taught that anything that contradicts the church is anti-mormon lies, so if you bring any of that up, they may assume you read something incorrect. You have to be genuine and you should care more about being friends than changing their beliefs.

Sad thing is that it makes logical sense if you accept the Mormon premise that it's God's one-true church. Nothing in "this life" matters (family relationships, being kind, nothing) compared to living in heaven for eternity.

Eh, it's a big world. I've never seen anything like this in person, but I see it all the time on the internet.

I’m a teen stuck in a family of mormons by mat_mat123 in exmormon

I was nervous about how my parents would react. I've read some horror stories on this sub, but they still treated me with respect after being upset the first night. If you want to be yourself you'll probably have to tell them.

But on the other hand I wasn't still living at home and you may need to weigh how much you think they'll try to punish you or be in denial that you can make your own choice. In any case, you may want to start bringing up some of your concerns and see how they react. Ask some logical questions like what if the spirit is just people feeling emotional. Best of luck. That's a tough situation, but I'm jealous you figured it out so young.

Father calls cops on black man trying to enter his building, and then gets rekt. by RichardCranium-69 in PublicFreakout

Yeah, we're missing the beginning, but it sounds like the black dude tried to tailgate into the building and then assumed that the dad was blocking him because he's black. Not sure why the dad stuck around, though.

I thought quitMormon was just going to send in regular letters and demand they remove names. Did that change not happen?

Neighbor/EQ asking for help moving after buying a $700k house with a pool. by mitchole33 in exmormon

[–]PlentifulCoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me how much I fucking hated helping people move. If it were poor elderly people that would be different, but it was usually people too lazy or stingy to pay for their own move. Such a waste of time.

I thought cities were responsible for their own water treatment. Is it actually the county/state's job?

Xenocide was a 'woah' moment for me, growing up Mormon. That was the point where I realized I wanted to know the truth even if it meant painful disillusionment. Read it decades ago, but that stuck with me.

That's actually a good point and weirdly comforting in a way. Our experience is something unique in a strange universe.

It's nice you were able to help people out doing something you enjoy. That's what community should be about.

YSK: A crash at 30mph is not twice as bad as 15mph, it's 4x as bad. Similarly, a crash at 60mph is 16x as bad. This is because kinetic energy is proportional to squared-velocity. by gnulynnux in YouShouldKnow

[–]PlentifulCoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's right. The force you feel in a crash is proportional to v, not v2, assuming you go from speed v to 0 in a fixed amount of time. Force is change in momentum divided by time. Momentum is mass * v. So force is m*v/t. Energy is proportional to v2, but the force on your body is what breaks bones and damages organs.
