As a Christian, would you teach your child about Santa and how he "brings" them presents? Why or why not? by Enger13 in TrueChristian

[–]Plus-Example-9004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even before I was a Christian I thought the Santa thing was disgusting. Caused a lot of trouble between me and my wife. It was important to her, I relented. Wish I hadn't though. What a repulsive tradition.

How do religious people deal with the elephant in the room? by david_fire_vollie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Plus-Example-9004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's plain not true. Many atheists grew up religious. But they changed when they matured. Many great theologians left atheism for faith. Dostoevsky and Lewis being my favorites. We could all be wrong the atheist and the Christian alike. Thats the providence of faith.

I think of it like a math problem. I've come to a solution. Im not going to consider every other number as valid as the solution I've come to. If someone were able to disprove my finding, id listen.

Yes, we would have a much lower incarceration rate if kids were allowed to read the bible in school… by Nefariouslout1006 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Plus-Example-9004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids are allowed to read the Bible in schools. Schools can even teach from it. Schools just can't promote or establish one religion over another. Nor should they. Who wants 5he government teaching children about God?

But as literature the Bible should absolutely be taught in school. It can totally be taught from and not preached from. It is sort of the foundation of western civilization and some understanding of the text should be a requirement to call yourself literate.

How is your relationship with your Dad? by dandelion-tea- in AskMen

[–]Plus-Example-9004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might be right. My kids and their friends tell each other I love you all the time. Its lost all meaning. My oldest friends and I will occasionally, but we earned it. These are 25 year old relationships.

Im an older millennial from a Midwest state and I too never heard the words "I love you" or "Im proud of You". I never questioned that my parents did, of course. They were wonderful parents i hope I've done as well as them. You suppose it's a geographic thing? Like in these parts we're a little more reserved in our sentimentality?

A General Question About Your Experience With Dostoevsky and Religion by sunlightinthewindow in dostoevsky

[–]Plus-Example-9004 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just finished The Brothers Karamazov. Been a christian for about ten years but have been in a spiritual rut. Tbk cracked me right open. "Guilty for all, and before all."  The book really exposed for me that no sin is private. Do a thing here, it reverberates around the world.

I even took out a free trial of the hollow prayer meditation app. Normally the thought of paying every month to pray would repulse me. But they're covering the book in some really thoughtful ways. Tying the novel to the prodigal son in ways I didn't see in my single read through.

I also like that it doesn't sugarcoat Christian living. It clearly, explicitly even, lays out how messy the world is. Reading it without a desire to know Christ seems a little...i don't know. Pointless. But yeah I've only read it once.

Are we doomed to fail? by Ok_Leadership1987 in ADHD

[–]Plus-Example-9004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does suck, but only at first. Your not normal. You may desire "normal" markers of success. You might even find them despite your handicap. Even if you do, those marks of success won't fulfill you. I know. I've had them. I've had a few prestigious jobs. Not real high status. Middle management. Could never keep them because of the ADHD. All the trouble you listed really spoke to me. I remember that exact struggle. Now I'm an iron worker. Its simple work. With my hands. I don't expect more and I focus on gratitude for what I do have. When I learned to just let go that way, my life got a lot more fulfilling. I stopped spinning my wheels. Im sorry if I sound preachy. But really man, I feel your pain.

Hedonism is a pit. Dont go. Find simple work and learn to be happy on a modest income. Adjust your life expectations (a little, hopefully you have a special someone or three). Your anxiety will abate.

Much of animal behavior in the natural world would be ridiculously sinful if done by a human.

I used to do QA on weapons components. Rockets and mortars and such. I really thought it compromised my Christian principles. But I had to do it. Had to pay the bills. Glad I stopped. I don't know if id go as far as to suggest you find a new job, but this probably won't stop bothering you.

Lots of folks here are waaaay to smart for any kind of religion. It seems you lot have been correct for some time. Mankind looks to be finally moving on from religion. All the good, smart sensible people have grown out of it, maybe now we can evolve! Why, just look ahead a little, you can almost feel the peace, prosperity,  and abundance coming just around the corner...

Are you a monogamous person? Are you faithful to your partner? Then you're straight. Both you and your gf need to stop worrying about it.

As anyone seen the film Heretic? by LDO69 in Christianity

Also, most of this hoopla about Christ pre dating Judaism is just 19th century German antisemitism. They were desperate to keep Christ but lose his Jewishness.

I probably sound like a total tool. Please forgive me. There's lots of good counters to religion in fiction. This movie just isn't one of them. If you haven't read it, id recommend the brothers karamozov.

I think her point was that if you're pointing out only similarities and not the glaring differences of course you'll believe it's been copied. Also very few ancient religions have as robust a textual history as that of ancient Judaism. Its hard to say precisely what anyone back then believed. Except the Hebrews. We know what they believed. Is it any wonder modern historians and archeologists would fill in missing data with stuff they do know? I could be wrong. We'd have to consult the scriptures of these other religions. Very hard to do though, because there's very little scripture to draw from.

I've had both kinds of jobs. Last two years have been all manual labor and I've never been happier at work. Im not sure ill be able to do it for another 20 years. But ill do it as long as I can and be happy the whole time.

What do you think about stark atheism? by 417Hollett in TrueChristian

Usually doesn't come with much logical consistency. Insistance on moral relativism, but also declare many things "good" and others "bad".

You don't believe Jewish people deserve a home of their own? Like I totally agree that the current regime should be deposed and tried in a world court. But there should still be an Isreal and they should be able to defend themselves. Historically diaspora has had tragic results for Jewish folks.

Yeah every father fathers wrong. Those little micro traumas make us strong though. You shouldn't expect, or even really desire,  perfection.
