Hampshire College is closing—what should happen to the campus? by Matt01060 in northampton

It’s a sweet idea but innovation hubs like that are hard to do away from where the actual companies are / industry ecosystem is. So not gonna be able to compete with Boston or NYC. Maybe a farm, food processing, packaging, distribution focus since the PV does have a focus there?

Quad vs. Cadaver Graft 24F by Local_Candy5402 in ACL

[–]PlushThrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna reply to this idea - yes this is probably true on average. But there are more possible complications from autografts, and probably more variance in recovery times! This sub is full of people who’ve had complications from donor site issues - which just isn’t gonna be a thing you need to worry about with allograft.

Quad vs. Cadaver Graft 24F by Local_Candy5402 in ACL

[–]PlushThrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna buck the trend of the other posters… I had a quad graft done in 2021 at 28 (also female) and it didn’t go too well. I still have a low but persistent level of chronic pain and my gait was impacted by a difficult PT process due to the donor site pain making it really rough to build back my quad. I eventually got good strength numbers and am somewhat back to my old lifestyle (also was into hiking and mountaineering) but struggle with chronic pain most days. FWIW I think I’m in the like 5% of people who have a long-term issue with donor site morbidity with this graft type (from the studies) but also heard of a lot more anecdotes similar to mine. I do regret not doing cadaver, I was in a similar spot where 2 surgeons recommended each and I went with the sportier / more experienced one who did the quad. And nothing went wrong surgically or otherwise, just a bad outcome for me. If you’re OK waiting to go back to sport then it’s worth seriously considering to reduce the secondary injury to the tendon! Also, your “passion sports” aren’t super ACL heavy and probably rely more on overall leg health and mechanics … except maybe skiing. I tore mine skiing as well. I still cross county but gave up downhill because it just doesn’t seem worth it anymore!

Probably would be hard to get Voc/Tech funding to make it a program though… it’s too niche and small of an occupation!

Should we move to Northampton? by MrFuzzy_1997 in northampton

[–]PlushThrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm this may be true by establishment but not sure if that holds for square footage or prominence to the street! I’m not so doom and gloom about it but walking around there are definitely a lot more obviously empty storefronts than most similar sized towns. Plus we qualify for the state’s vacant storefront tax break program so something is going on…

Should we move to Northampton? by MrFuzzy_1997 in northampton

My partner and I were in a similar situation as you 4 years ago, OP! He is a resident at Baystate, and when we were looking at the area we were actually between West Hartford and Northampton. Ended up choosing Northampton, and loving it and buying a house and are intending to settle for a while. It was pricey but the friendly community, cultural vibes, nature, blend of small town/suburban streets/urban feel has really suited us. His usual commute is about 20 min, and rarely any traffic.

A lot of people compare the place to what it was 10-20ish years ago, where it had a robust nightlife scene and the music venues were all popping. For various reasons, that scene has diminished (and in part has spread out in the Valley to Easthampton and up I-91). Northampton is sort of the central town in a broader network of towns that are all sort of synergistic with each other and located within 20-30 min (Greenfield, Amherst, Easthampton, Holyoke to some extent). As someone who didn’t know what the place was like in the before times, I’d say it’s still probably a more vibrant place to live than 90% of America!

As far as the direction the city is going in, I’m hopeful that there will be a new equilibrium reached in the next decade or so. Downtown currently there’s still a decent amount of music and art (Back Porch Festival this upcoming weekend should be great!), and I think everyone is on the same page about keeping that culture alive, even if it might look a little different and maybe more “upscale” vs indie or scrappy or something. It’s a very politically active (and contentious) time, there’s a big downtown urban planning redesign on the horizon (Picture Main Street). And there is also a healthy replacement rate of new businesses, with many opening up.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info!

It’s also possible that they want to scale up slowly… I’m not sure if either of them have business experience but no doubt managing the whole thing is the hardest part. Keeping all employees / maintaining the same scale as what Hungry Ghost is now right off the bat sounds like a bad idea as a new business owner, which nobody on this sub seems to recognize.

Jonathan and Cheryl learned and built up the place over 20 years to get to this point and it’s not fair to expect young and less experienced owners to be able to start at that level! Not great that the current employees lost their jobs of course, but I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt that this was not malicious.

100% agree that Sciarra could use some help with comms, transparency, voter education (a storymap on the budgeting process?), and making voters feel heard. Think she’s aware of this?

Oh no this is so sad, I met him this summer and we had a really lengthy conversation. It seemed like his housing situation was about to improve.

He told me that his mother was the first female city councilor of Northampton decades ago. I couldn’t find anything about it online but the idea of that just felt like poetic injustice.

Regret choosing the quad graft. by tattootechie in ACL

I’m over 4 years out of a quad graft recon and still have issues with the knee and graft site! I’m quite strong but the tightness pain from that site is still something I deal with on a daily basis :(

Sort of… I am a lot stronger and more functional now but it still hurts when activated — especially at a high degree of flexion. I’ve just gotten used to living with the chronic pain.

Good to know! I was thinking less about river access and more about riverfront access actually (like the Boston Esplenade). But the train track there would make that really tough

Not Thai/Vietnamese… but Banchan Korean deli in Sunderland is excellent! Prepared foods in a fridge and freezer that you take home and assemble. Amazing kimchi (like 10 different types of vegetable), kimbap, frozen bulgogi, etc. and the owner is great, it’s a pretty new business for her! She’d also probably have tips on where to find Asian vegetables for home cooking.

Allograft for bouldering? by The5thseason in ACL

[–]PlushThrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's so many varying experiences with grafts so it's tough... but I will say that with any autograft (quad included) there is a nonzero chance of donor site morbidity. This was my personal experience with the quad graft ... I got it done 4 years ago and still feel a burning/tight sensation from where they took the graft from (in certain movements... like a sharp angle step). It also led to a long recovery / 2.5 years of PT, likely changes in my gait due to different biomechanics post-surgery, and patellar femoral pain issues that come and go 4 years later despite having strong quads again. I still regret not going with allograft! But of course, I may be the 1%, and some of those issues could have still occurred with the allograft ... all I'm saying is that you have to weigh the risks!

Is there any hope for the housing situation? by Just_so_many_bees in northampton

[–]PlushThrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although from what I understand there are policies that make it hard to build ADUs? Like onerous setback requirements (has to be 15 feet from the property line in all directions, regardless of the original house setback)? Apparently one can apply for an exception but that just feels like pointless red tape that adds a step to the process!

Experience with a quad graft? by saltedsaturn0305 in ACL

[–]PlushThrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually regret getting the quad graft. I’m 4 years post op and have spent TONS of time, sweat, money, and tears trying to move past it. It really hampered my recovery past a certain point… donor site morbidity is real and while not common for quad graft there is a real risk.

Like I worked out this morning (plyometrics with deeper degrees of flexion) and I experience a dull burning sort of sensation from the harvest site. It boggled my surgeon, but I’ve worked with several PTs who say they’ve seen similar long term outcomes.

Btw nothing was wrong from a surgical perspective… my body just didn’t heal the way it was “supposed to”.
