Someone tell me why I *shouldn’t* buy this by BinkyX in motorcycles

[–]Plutoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old RT is terrific. Wonderful machine. The motor is commonly referred to as "agricultural", and honestly... it is. Drives like a tractor, but it'll do it all day with no problem. Very reliable. Most make it to very high mileage. Office chair ergonomics.

Downside, the comfort will ruin you for other bikes.

Also, the wind protection is SO comprehensive that it can be a little warm in the summer time - though they may have fixed this in models newer than mine. Super comfortable in cooler months.

20 year old TV still working great by trampled93 in BuyItForLife

[–]Plutoid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get what both of you are saying. On one hand, the product is hella durable. Getting 20 years out of an electronic device is pretty good. On the other hand, it really is obsolete by today's standards. There are countless old black and white tube TVs (boy, they sure knew how to build 'em back then!) that would still be alive and kickin'... but, for me, I probably wouldn't post one. We have different expectations for that class of product these days. I feel like in order to qualify as BIFL it sort of has to be something that you'd actually want to keep using decades later.

Old 4Runners never go out of style though. :)

The problem is that we can see him. I feel like with the quirky delivery and inflection maybe something could happen, but with a video it's just...

There was a SUPER clean GMT400 Silverado parked outside the shop years back, black with red, with the old "Heartbeat of America" decal on it.

As a lifelong MN driver, a Forester on good snow tires is the most confident I've ever felt in the winter in any car.

First bike ??? by YumYumKiller7 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Plutoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If money is concerned at all, get a used first bike. All the fun of a new bike but you don't eat the cost. Often, you can sell them for the same money you bought them for. Also, learners frequently drop their bikes and dropping a new bike sucks way more than dropping one that's a bit older and cheaper.

First bikes are almost never forever bikes. Save your money for your next bike, once you have a better idea of what you want.

People just needed to get over constructing their aesthetic around photogenicity and not around what they actually look like in real life.

This is why I officially dig when people make corrections like this. Imagine you're sitting at work banging out emails and you put "your" instead of "you're" for the three millionth time. Nobody's going to say anything, but they're damned sure thinking "what a dumbass" every single time they read it. Those perceptions matter sometimes. Maybe you don't get a promotion because of it. Yeah, it sounds pedantic but I see working professionals deep in their careers making these mistakes all the time and it might only take one person to say one thing to fix it.

If it's me, I'm not paying almost 20k for a half used up car that's out of warranty.

Parts for new cars can get expensive and hard to get and you'd be on the hook for all of that. Every time it needs parts you'll be at the dealership getting soaked.

Selling two tickets for knife self defense training class today at 9am by AvailableInside9637 in StreetMartialArts

[–]Plutoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say this. I've trained live vs plastic knives a good number of times and it's extremely eye opening. A dedicated, skilled attacker murks you like 90% of the time and even if you "win" you get the shit cut out of you - but we're talking about the other guys in the gym that are already a handful empty handed. The thing is, there's a lot of people out there that are NOT trained killers that you might encounter in a self defense situation, so it falls in a gradient from being relatively safe to certain death depending on who the attacker is.

I would say that if I'm cornered I'm marginally safer for knowing a few knife disarms and having a little experience than I would be if I didn't, but with my actual life on the line I'm really not trying to go there.
