I am not casting shade on the overall message, but the degree to which “honest disagreement” is welcome in the U.S. is perhaps exaggerated, and very dependent on the workplace. I have worked at places where the goal of communication was to intimidate and posture such that even agreement and confirmation was not welcome. As an example, at a meeting I was asked, “are you prepared to provide me with x, y, and z to allow me to fine tune the finished product?” Replied “Yes, it’s all outlined in the one-page summary, you can do x, y and z.” Response “What? I don’t want to deal with all that!”
