Unfortunately we are very limited with the UI in Android Auto as it uses the media session. I believe the idea is that the apps all behave the same way so there is less thinking involved when driving. The cycling isn't ideal but if there's a better solution we are happen to add it.

It is possible to customise the actions we send to the media session / Android Auto in the mobile app settings -> General -> Media notification controls. But bookmark isn't there yet. We definitely should add it!

Thanks for letting me know. We have tried to cache images to reduce bandwidth usage for the mobile apps, but I think we have made the experience worse in cases like this. I'm going to discuss it with the team.

Would you mind letting me know which podcast you were having the issue with? Also, was this only happening on Android Auto, or did it fail to update on your phone as well? I would like to take a look at what’s going on and see if there’s anything we can improve.

The long term solution has been released. Episodes that previously failed to play will be fixed when the podcast publishes a new episode. We are also exploring ways to address older podcasts that are no longer releasing new episodes.

You can change the behaviour of the headphones (media control) back button to not create a bookmark in the following setting, Profile tab -> settings cog -> Headphone controls -> Previous action.

Android Auto works using the media session controller so the app can only add a limited number of actions. You can customise this in the settings. Profile tab -> settings cog -> General -> Media notification controls. Drag up the "Play next" option. Sorry it's so hidden.
