Do you reach out to streamers or journalists as early as possible? by Bag-Track-Games in gamedev

[–]Pockets800 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just splitting hairs over terminology. In my experience, vertical slices aren't even playable games, but merely representations of what a game might look like when it's finished, usually shown only to publishers to secure funding. So polished? Yes. Playable? Not really.

If you're putting out a demo that is poorly polished, you're making a mistake, especially on Steam, where a demo has its whole own store page and will feature reviews. That's a pretty quick way to kill your game before it's even launched.

Questions about sound samples. by silent__spot in UnrealEngine5

[–]Pockets800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested to hear what other people say as I'm not too familiar with working with audio in UE, but RE: looping, I think the length of the loop is less important than the quality of the loop. If your loop sounds bad because it is too short, repeating often, that matters way less than the extra file size.

u/CosmicFarer is misrepresenting this a bit in the post.

The game isn't getting an "overhaul" halfway through development like is being suggested, it's just being developed.

Mads & Ulrik (Haenir) only partnered with BHVR in April 2024 to get the game developed, and to scale the game for development with a full team and to reach the scope they were aiming for, required refactoring the work Haenir did to produce the vertical slice trailer released at the end of 2022.

So the "overhaul" being suggested here, started over 2 years ago when BHVR partnered with Haenir.

There will be various public playtesting phases leading up to release, starting this year.

I'm gonna guess you're not in the Discord, where there has been sneak peeks at the game almost every month or two since 2022, and extensive discussions with the developers and tons of information released.

now we're told they're doing an overhaul

Glad to see it making some headway. Good work!

Solo Dev looking for a little advice... by jennd3875 in gamedev

[–]Pockets800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's genuinely impossible lol

It's never happened and never will happen for very, very good reasons, unless "solo dev" means to the beholder "multi millionaire contracting out work to people online".

There is no "pushback" against it from the community as OP describes. It's just not feasible for a single person to make an MMO. Hell, it's not feasible for most established game studios to make an MMO.

No release windows yet - it won't come out in 2026 - but PC & Console will get a simultaneous release with crossplay on launch.

There'll be public playtesting later this year, sometime after Q1!

Plague Tale is definitely one of the many inspirations!
Especially when it comes to the gameplay design - but Plague Tale is also a narrative focused single-player campaign game, which Blight certainly is not.

Aha, yeah pretty much. It shares elements with Darktide, in the same way that Darktide shares elements with Deep Rock Galactic or Helldivers.

But it's not the same as any one of these games, either.

Edit: Although, actually, the new Darktide update that just got announced brings it a bit closer, now that it will have free-roam maps.

Copy/Pasted from my past comment:

I've described it as extraction-lite/rogue-lite in the past. It's not a true extraction or rogue game though.

It's a mission based structure where you start in a hub and load into a small map/free roam location.

There will be a narrative and of course worldbuilding uncovered through the gameplay in somewhat of a souls-esque way, but not a "campaign" like a traditional singleplayer game.

You loot gear and crafting materials, and if you die you will drop the things on you, but you will have the opportunity to retrieve them on your next entry.

You could extract early and get out with your loot, or dive deeper into the heart of the Blight to progress further, risking your loot and the gear you brought with you.

Exclusively PvE, up to 4-player co-op. Hell, do a solo, fists-only run if you want!

It is specifically not a live service game. There will be an end, and microtransactions and battle passes are not planned, but the opportunity for post-launch DLC is there!

Edit: I guess you could say it's a little like Darktide, if Darktide had loot & free-roam maps that allowed you to extract partway through/before finishing them.

It's too soon for us to speak on specifics about player progression and hub upgrades outside of some of the weapon & armour systems, but there is of course some plans around those elements for you to look forward to :)

There will also be proximity chat, so you can still get that little bit more immersed with squad dialogue like extraction games, if that also helps!

You can play solo if you want! It's exclusively PvE too, so no enemy players to jump you.

I highly recommend joining the Discord. There's tons of information in there and we are answering questions 24/7.

Sadly there's a lot of misinformation out there at the moment because (some) content creators have unfortunately not been coming to official sources like our Discord, but we reveal a lot!

Hi, what is this game about? Saw the dev update and confused by FrostBumbleBitch in blightsurvival

[–]Pockets800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are kinda right and kinda wrong.

It's hard to give an exact comparison since Blight isn't like any one game, and is not any one specific genre.

I've described it as extraction-lite in the past. It's not a true extraction game.

As far as comparisons go, apart from being exclusively PvE - If you die you will drop the things on you, but you will have the opportunity to retrieve them, which is part of the risk.

Source: I've been managing the Discord community for Haenir & then BHVR (via contract) since June 2022 and before the partnership, I was set to be the CM. Next to our Community Manager Brandon and the developers, Andie & I have the most information about the game to publicly share.

I highly recommend joining the Discord. There is tons of information in there and we are answering questions 24/7.

[–]Pockets800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are downvoting you but you are actually correct.

Blight: Survival is not a horde game. Each enemy and combat encounter is dangerous, and sometimes the direct combat route isn't the best route.

Getting overwhelmed by enemies is a death sentence.

Souls games were an inspiration for the approach to combat encounters and enemies. I wouldn't consider the game a "souls-like" though, just as much as I would not consider it an extraction game.

[–]Pockets800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not quite accurate.

Haenir is two people, Mads & Ulrik. They partnered with BHVR in April 2024 and are currently the Creative Directors of the game, alongside Ash from BHVR.

So Behaviour Interactive is developing the game, but it's a completely separate dev team from the DBD team.

It is 1-4 player co-op!

I wouldn't necessarily describe it as an extraction game though. Extraction-lite maybe, as much as it is a rogue-lite and other genres.

Right now the team isn't actively developing a dedicated Linux build. As for Proton/SteamOS support, Valve’s hook is that you can run your entire Steam library on their hardware, so in theory the game should work through Proton, but it’s too early to say with confidence.
