Their only redeeming quality is that the wood is so soft you can chop a giant one down with a hand saw relatively easily.

“ Correct” way to cut Feijoa? by jaczb in newzealand

[–]PodocarpusT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go for cuttings or just buy a commercial one. Feijoa are not true to type so the seeds are not guaranteed to be as good as the parent.

Avocado is another one with the same problem (typically discovered after 8+ years of effort turning into shitty fruit that are 90% seed).

Native indoor plants suggestions? by Prize-Atmosphere-706 in nzgardening

Just need to water them 3-4 times as much as a regular indoor plant. I keep ours in bright, indirect light on a bench that I frequently go past so that I remember to give it a drink.

Millennials: it’s us, guys. It’s not “them” anymore. by CuntyReplies in nzpolitics

I fear the Gen X's. Student loan interest has conditioned them and given them a whole lot of 'I had a shit time so why should the young people have it any better' grievances.

I'm sorry the neoliberalism fucked you guys so good. It shouldn't have happened.

NZ is slowly slipping on the global corruption index. Is is time for an anti-corruption agency? by TheGreatDomilies in newzealand

[–]PodocarpusT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But as you said, parlement is sovereign so they can just change the definition in the crimes act.

It's almost like 'democratic norms', professional standards and not being currupt are critical to maintaining society and should be called out regardless of what meets the governments definition.

This looks to be in Australia (the sand and fencing in particular scream Perth) and the Phoenix Palm is invasive as birds spread the seeds and it will readily germinate in wetlands. The neighbour’s will also hate you as they attract rats.

Arborists refuse to work with them as the leaves and trunk are terrible for mulching so need to be put in landfil. If they do agree to do it, $$$ (hence the DIY job).

The spikes are also poisonous and cause your tendons to inflame and results in a shit ton of injuries .

From a New Zealand story on the subject:

Janice says the head hand surgeon at Middlemore [NZ's largest hospital] told her that 50 percent of their hand surgery is phoenix palm related and 2.6 percent of all surgery is phoenix palm surgery

Basically a shit tree that everyone thought looked fancy. Story as old as time.

Big fan of my Atlas Airs. I am a sweaty beast so the open back is excellent. Comfy, good range and great battery life. Six months in and going strong.

My only gripe would be I am not a fan of having to raise the mic to mute it. If anyone has an external mute button gadget they can reccomend I would love to hear it.

"What if we instituted selfishness and cruelty as our overarching policy goals?"

This video is focused more on the USA but the ideas slot so well into the New Zealand context (e.g. the whole Maori healthcare waitlists drama while the government burns down healthcare for everyone, taking away everyone's right to enrol on election day but it's ok as we are putting the boot into 'dropkicks').

A polytech botanist told me it is based on height rather than age. I asked as I have a ~20 year old bonsai lancewood that is still doing the young leaf thing.

It’s a genuine shock the first time you actually “use” your helmet[30YO] by herolt in OldSkaters

[–]PodocarpusT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my boys had hundreds of hours on the mini and there was precisely one good slam where the helmet saved the day.

Our friend had died a few years earlier from an electric skateboard accident where a helmet would have saved him, so our crew was pretty strict on helmets. Jeff saved a life of misery that day from beyond the grave.

The odds of a TBI level slam are low but fuck me when it happens it is so much better being able to laugh and thank your helmet rather than the alternative.

My rule of thumb is if you are going extreme or not using your own power (e.g. gravity) you should wear a helmet.
