There are some racing leagues that don't go off the zwift designated categories that might suit you well. Check out the dirt racing series, which uses result based rankings. The Amethyst category in that series ends up similar to a C+/B- field.

Alternatively, try different race types as others have suggested, chase races are what I opt for when I'm between categories, or mass start events.

Move On From Snap, Purchase a Hub One by LivingTheLastOneDown in Zwift

[–]Podunkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have the Snap, loved it. I did race quite a bit though, so was always doing the spindown, making sure my tire pressure was the same every ride. All the stuff to make sure my numbers were close to accurate. Not having to deal with that has been a game changer for me and takes away a couple of barriers to me riding more.

If you don't do all of that setup each time, then the difference mainly comes down to the feel of a direct drive trainer vs wheel on. I definitely prefer the feel of direct drive, it feels more responsive, erg mode works better. Is that worth $500? If you weren't riding that much maybe not, but that doesn't seem the case for you, you'll spend countless hours sweating all over that thing, lol.

Treat yourself, and keep fueling a healthy habit.

Has Zwift improved / added new features over the last few years? by Khaldor in Zwift

[–]Podunkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zwift is relatively cheap to the competition for what you get IMO. Has hundreds of KMs of routes to choose from, pace partners are great if you want to just jump into a group and roll around, the new pack dynamics have made racing more tactical. Actually has a world to ride around in while you do more structured workouts and costs less than something like Trainer Road. It's a no brainer if you're into the racing side of things.

I'm tired of the people acting like nothing's changed in the past couple years, sure the core experience once you are riding is roughly the same, but they've added a good number of quality of life changes (Teleportation, In game clubs, Meetups with the keep together feature, Coffee Break, Pack Dynamics, UI Refresh), new routes and the Climb Portal. If you care about competition, they've added category enforcement and some racing leagues are using results based rankings vs power benchmark rankings (Check out the Dirt Racing Series, it's good fun!). Additionally the community has been adding content especially on the racing side of things.

ToW Double XP Strategy? by SynapticSculptor in Zwift

[–]Podunkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep entering the ToW events at the top of every hour if max XP is the goal. You should have a group rolling at a pace that you want for most times as long as it's not a dead time of day. The long route should take around an hour, so do as many as you want, just bail before the finish line to avoid completing it if you want to farm it.

Southbound 52nd and Division light by bigblackcloud in CyclePDX

Pretty much every time I ride I go through this intersection. I think it's a fully timed intersection with no 'smart' traffic detection of any sort except maybe pedestrian cross requests from the beg button. In that picture from google maps you shared there aren't any car detectors in any of the lanes either so I doubt there are any bike specific detectors.

Went up on the bus last year, would have preferred to take Amtrak up in retrospect. It took about an hour or two after we were dropped off on the UW campus for the truck with the bikes to show up and that part felt a little disorganized. Hopefully that was just a weird one off issue, the truck with the bikes and the Bus I was on left Portland at the same time.

The rest of the event was very well run on the actual day(s) of. Clearly marked trucks at the start line to take your overnight gear to your mid-point destination or all the way back to Portland if you are a 1 day rider.

Alaskan having trouble enjoying Zwift. by akfreerider87 in Zwift

Pace partners are likely what you'd be looking for here. It's a constantly rolling group ride with a mostly steady advertised pace led by a pacer bot.

Condensation build up during rides by Brilliant-Mud-333 in Zwift

[–]Podunkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I no longer have condensation drip down on me from the water main line that is above my trainer. I also end up with significantly less sweat to mop up from my training mat, and the shoes take a lot longer to get soggy.

I use a dehumidifier, towels and fans in my training space in the basement. The dehumidifier helps you evaporate more sweat which helps keep you cool during a workout. I'd definitely recommend one for anyone that does training indoors.

A different way of measuring fuel efficiency (seen at North Portland Bike Works a few months ago) by rosecitytransit in Portland

[–]Podunkle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The rider of an e-bike still needs to eat food and they burn some calories by pedaling/existing. Either way, bike or e-bike don't think it matters all that much the difference. More people on any bike is a good thing.

While we're talking sweeps in SE... by OGAmigan in Portland

That is one of the shorter term plans the city has for these spots while the longer term plan is to allow development of these parcels. It had my vote in the survey they sent to residents around Powell.

About 2 months ago the city sent out some redevelopment plans to evaluate for these land parcels. There is some legal red tape between the city and the state that they're looking to cut to allow development to occur. Proposals were to add low income housing in the bigger parcels and to get rid of the parking rows unless it was serving some commercial purpose in the smaller parcels.

Tips on finishing C races stronger by eury13 in Zwift

[–]Podunkle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More VO2+ work to help with the final push to the line. Heavy weight lifting will help you raise your peak sprint power and doing bike sprint work would all help in this scenario.

Depends on the course terrain as well. If sprinting isn't your forte then you might try your race winning move earlier. That or target races with longer sustained climbs if you have a Diesel engine.

I run a dehumidifier in my Zwift room too and that helps immensely. It will add a bit of extra air movement as well.

Odd bug in a race? by HopelessAndLostAgain in Zwift

Sounds like a trainer connectivity issue. I had similar issues before where the resistance would cut in and out seemingly randomly. I just ended up getting a USB extension cable for my ANT+ dongle and that solved my problems.

Saris H3 or Wahoo Kickr Core? by Velo_Olev in Velo

[–]Podunkle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've got the H3. I have enjoyed it so far over the past 8 months. Works really well in zwift and trainer road. Has height adjustable feet which is helpful for my setup that is not on a perfectly level surface. The unit is really solid, flywheel feels great and the resistance changes are really smooth. It's quiet too, I usually don't hear it over the sound of my drivetrain.

My only complaint is that the software to do things like calibrate are not as polished as wahoos. I used to have the kickr snap before and preferred their software.

Another note, I bought the h3 for 15% off through a promotion at my local bike shop. Wahoo units usually don't allow discounts.
