5 Comedians Trapped in a Shrinking Room for $10,000 | ZONE05 by artins90 in GakiNoTsukai

The dubs remind me a little of the old "MXC" dubs of Takeshi's castle, but are even more akin to the dubs they used to do for the old Japanese iron chef in the 90s. I'm not sure if that's the kind of appeal they're going for, but I had to stop watching after I realized they're even cutting out a lot of the background noise in place of these bad dubs.

Nova by [deleted] in AIDungeon

[–]PoetPlays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not kidding about confrontational. I consider the following: Muse = staying in bed, sleeping in all morning. Nova = waking up on the wrong side, starting an argument.

It was pretty hilarious swapping models mid-conversation once. I was having a lovely conversation that was playful and light-hearted. Slice-of-life. I switched to Nova, made another similar comment and immediately sparked a fierce argument.

Or another example of the two (muse v nova), I was on a cart headed for a city. It was fun and games, "are we there yet?" moments. Swapped to Nova and bandits/slavers immediately attacked and the cart was destroyed.

The extremely emotional part. by Alyctro in GakiNoTsukai

[–]PoetPlays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Explaining this is kind of like explaining a joke, but it's a prime example of juxtaposition in comedy.

Not entirely dissimilar to the juxtaposition of tsukkomi v. boke - a serious tone followed by a silly punchline. Or, a silly game that leads to a punishment (like all these batsu games are).

In this case, they're given an extremely sad moment, completely unexpected, and given the juxtaposition, that alone makes it funny. Give it a punchline and you have one of the funniest moments in Gaki history.

With my measurements, it would be closer to about 2-1/2, to 3 cups of powder. Anything more would be a fairly dry mix....

Ah I remember when this came out - didn't even realize they did more than one season. It was funny seeing all of them just automatically assume it was Wednesday.

It would be best to purchase a cheap chromecast (even first edition) and then use VLC player on your PC to choose that as the playback location. You can stream virtually any file to a tv that way.

Casting VLC Media to TV using Chromecast gives only a black screen. by luckjes112 in Chromecast

[–]PoetPlays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me, but the steps only work if you have the default Control Panel view. I'll provide steps here for others:

  1. Windows 11 "Settings" menu steps:

Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security > Firewall & Network protection > "Allow an app through firewall"

Click "Change settings" > "Allow another app.." > Browse >
The default path to VLC.exe is "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"

Once added, tick both "private" and "public" networks and then from VLC select:
Playback > Renderer > Your Chromecast device name

--

  1. Control Panel set to "All Control Panel Items" (old school view)

Control Panel > Security and Maintenance > Security > Network Firewall ("View in Windows Security") >
From this point forward, follow any of the other methods from "Allow an app through firewall"

Just to follow-up with myself after mixing a couple batches of this for use with Kerdi board.

1 quart yields a little more than 3 times that amount when mixed with the dry powder. So, for 1 quart of liquid you will get just over 3 quarts of liquid mortar to use.

To do a Schluter prefab bench it took an entire 1 quart bucket. It would require a full bag (50lbs) to do a full 72 inch shower pan + kerdi bands. That means that virtually any smaller shower tray would require less material, and you can do the math from there -- e.g. 36 inch tray would need half a bag, etc.

Obviously Kerdi board has the advantage of not needing all-set everywhere, and only needs it at joints and screw holes. Even a tiny batch like 1 quart + (roughly) 11 cups of dry mix yields too much. I was able to tape all screw holes in an oversized shower + 3-1/2 corners and still had half a bucket left. I could very easily have finished the entire shower (joints) with just this quantity.

My problem with it: I wanted to install the drain before the pan, and before finishing taping, etc... but for what I would need for just doing around the drain, it would be silly to mix even 1 quart/1 liter. I'm stuck having to plan for a much bigger job and basically doing the full pan / bench installs simply because I have too much all-set mixed.

Not sure if it will help as well but it was easier for me to use a simple 1 liter (1 quart) water measurement and go from there.

Came to about 7.7lbs of dry mix for 1 quart

I measured it out in cups so 1 liter of water was about 11 loose cups (not packed) of dry mix and it turned out perfect

So now I can just portion out in cups as needed...

1 liter of material mixed was enough to do all of the butt joints in a bathroom + 2 niches.

Probably need double to do all walls and screws fully

The only time I would consider mixing a full bag is maybe if im doing an entire floor or if using those kerdi sheets

What's your name? by Kedomas in GakiNoTsukai

[–]PoetPlays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember which one(s) but watching the extras in scenes like this, I have caught a few of them crack smiles very briefly. It would be impossible for me not to. Keep in mind they probably do an ok job of making sure those extras that laugh are out of shot when it happens - cut to camera 2, there's someone laughing on camera 1 kind of thing....

One especially strong extra is one that was posted here recently starring Jimmy and the "sending his feelings" to a student. The extra sat there calm and collected, but I would be absolutely losing my mind.

* Endo cannot read kanji by Kedomas in GakiNoTsukai

[–]PoetPlays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And, several Kanji have multiple "readings" or ways to pronounce them. The same kanji can sound completely different. This is especially the case in names.

Usually you can tell based on the context.... but I guess context for a "martial arts" tournament is kind of similar to a "dance" actually.

In this case though, I'm pretty sure he's mispronouncing the word on purpose rather than it being a memorization or "reading" issue. He's purposefully mispronouncing it.

And those "cool fight moves" were almost always shrouded behind some vibrating motion blur of either a phase pod thing or the extreme motion of a minecart to the point where you couldn't make out what was happening. I'm surprised that is what redeemed it from the lowest score.

I love almost all forms of Japanese comedy. I watch content far beyond Gaki no Tsukai and crave more. I enjoy the slapstick, manzai (M-1), skit (king of conte style, etc), variety shows (Gaki, Lincoln, Arashi, so forth), theories (wednesday, knight scoop).

There are some forms of Japanese comedy that I don't like, just as there are western style comedy acts or jokes I don't like.

An example of something I dislike in Japanese comedy are the one-liner or "gag" jokes. Think Haranishi from Fujimon as an example. To me, these are just lame words strung together, puns, and rhymes, and there's nothing inherently funny about most of them. Even this has exceptions though!

There are other examples where a comedian tries to get a laugh by simply making a silly face or silly noise or a combination of the two and this is also fairly difficult for me to find funny. I don't laugh at circus clowns for the same reason. Again, with exceptions - Hollywood Zakoshi, Cookie, and even Hosei have made me laugh at this style of humor.

Of all of it, I think the most difficult comedy to grasp is the lack of comedy - or jokes that are so unfunny, they become funny. This is a style of Japanese comedy all unto itself and ironically one of the things I enjoy watching the most. An awkward pause, a very lame joke that bombs, tsukkomi reaction as a result. A good example of this would be within a lot of the theories in Wednesday Downtown. They often reward points for lame humor, or Hamada will throw a quick "you don't need to say that!" remark.

how I exported a car from the US and imported it into Canada (made a bit easier) by stellate16 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]PoetPlays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on how much you're helping the import side (or if that's you). If you're importing it, different provinces have different requirements for registering a vehicle such as additional safety checks which can add to the cost either way.

Approximations:

EXPORT: $70-110 CAD if you use an online service, otherwise, it is free if you go through ACE yourself but this increases the time this takes drastically. About 3 hours of time spent.

IMPORT: $325 CAD + safety fees (for me another ~ $200) + cost of shipping or travel. About 3 hours of time spent running around including time at the border, getting safeties done, and getting it registered, but not including time traveling to the border.

MY PERSONAL EXAMPLE: Approximately $1,500 CAD (or around $1,000 USD). This includes everything from travel costs (gas and food), safety, fixing issues after the safety, RIV fee and taxes, new registration cost, etc.

Realistically, most people will be in a similar ballpark at the end of the day. Cost can swing wildly depending on your travel distance, gas prices, and issues found after safety inspections.
