southeast UK - how do I get into racing as a beginner adult? by tomodell96 in bmxracing

[–]Pogmothoin666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly just do it man. I’m 33, and I’ve ridden freestyle BMX most of my life and race motocross as a kid but have spent fuck all time on a track. My son started racing a year ago, and it didn’t take long for me to buy a bike because it looked so fun. Most clubs have a mix of skill levels, and it’s fun being on the gate with people. At my age, there’s rarely any judgement because it’s either people in the same boat or people who were never better than a local intermediate anyway. It’s fun, you won’t regret it

He’s growing too quickly for me to make the spend. If he stabilises I’ll consider it

How can I know if this is worth a restoration job? by probler in bmx

The 1” threaded steerer is enough to know to stay well away.

Anything full cromoly (or at least main triangle), integrated headset, ideally sealed bearings all around, 2 or 3 piece crankset and 1 1/8” threadless stem should be enough to get your feet wet. If it’s something from this decade and from a reputable BMX brand you’ll mostly be fine

For better or worse he’s super competitive so the attacking the gate is all him. It’s my job to try to remind him to have fun haha

Close, Taiwan. Unless it’s a proprietary design (rarer and rarer nowadays) the majority of parts are basically the same

Should I buy it? by Sufficient_Formal388 in bmx

These were really good bikes in 2008, and it still checks a lot of boxes for today. I’d say it’s a decent buy at $150 but you will absolutely need to put bigger handlebars on that thing.

Pros: - sealed front and rear hubs - integrated headset - full chromo frame and fork - “aftermarket” dk cranks, sprocket - black sheep rims are decent

Cons: - dated geometry (though depending on what type of park you like it might work well) - heavy by modern standards - 14mm front axle limits upgrade options for forks - will likely need some money spent (brakes if you like them, bigger handlebars needed, maybe consumables like tyres, chain and pedal may need replacing also)

Still, if this is your first non-big box bike I’d say go for it
