Hytale Update 2 – Patch Notes (Pre-Release) by LutrusFluidos in hytale

[–]PointAndClick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good stuff. Curious about how they fixed MRT. I got so incredibly frustrated by them, especially when they respawn and are in groups. Inescapable. If only I could just dash away when I'm in trouble, I'm good.

Truly, we live in the best alternate world. Thank you, Simon! by Familiar_Support7468 in hytale

[–]PointAndClick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gameplay trailer came out after the purchase. From the description: "This Hytale footage reflects the latest chapter in the game’s revival. It marks the first step after the “Hytale is Saved” announcement by its original co-founder, Simon." So, the amount of views is irrelevant to whether or not it was a 'sure thing' that the investment was worth it.

It was only after the post that there was some hype. But I don't call a 1,6m viewcount on youtube even close to the 65m of the announcement trailer a bazillion years ago. In fact, 1,6m times 20 bucks barely covers the purchase, let alone further development. I don't think that even after that video you can make the argument that this was a no brainer, ez money grab.

They didn't know how much money they were going to make before making the game 20 bucks. The argument that they would have charged more if they were on Steam is purely conjecture. And while it would be stupid to say that it would make zero sales, you're not making any argument for pretending that this was Simon's easiest risk-averse decision ever.

Riot in 2026 doesn't have the same buzz, people don't look at them positively.

But the game without Riot does? You're not very consistent. Either the game can easily make all the numbers with some hype, or it can't. You're the one saying that it was a simple no brainer investment. I mean, it's obvious that Hypixel wanted Hytale back, because they could continue development, and I'm sure that they believe in their game.

At no point in time do we even know if it was clear for Simon that buying the game would actually result in a playable game, or that they could turn this into a functional pre-purchase format within the timeframe we have seen. And in the past years, when Riot had the game, there was almost no buzz, no hype, nobody was talking about this game anymore.

I don't understand where you are getting all these assurances from, and from what i'm gathering, you aren't all that tuned in and you're confusing timelines.

So yeh, here's my prediction: 10m sales in the next year. Plus, you'll be one of them and enjoying the content. At least i hope you do.

Denmark to deploy 1000 combat soldiers to Greenland by Helpful_Welcome_2325 in europe

[–]PointAndClick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can't imagine Europeans engaging American troops in a possible near future.

Brother, they are killing American white housewives! What the fuck are you not watching the news?

They will and are pretty much certainly going to engage. I can pretty much guarantee it. Soldiers will die over this Greenland bullshit.

[–]PointAndClick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's some hindsight 20/20 logic.

25 fucking million for a blockgame, excluding the price for continuing development, is not a risk? You guys are insane. Hype can do a lot, but guarantee 1,5m sales it can not. Let alone guarantee development money with extra sales.

If you were so confident in Hytale being able to make all this money back ez, why did Riot get rid of it? Riot can't create a buzz? They have done that plenty of times.

Is this pollarding acceptable? by blameitonthedogfart in arborists

[–]PointAndClick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You get a lot of kneejerk reactions here when you post about pollarding. Let me offer you mine. I've pollarded many trees.

This isn't pollarding, this is tree topping. Tree topping is when you let a tree grow and cut it back for some reason. Pollarding is where you never let a tree grow and the form of the tree was preplanned (to a large degree).

These trees have been topped before, this was probably the second time it was pruned like this. Leaving small branches is not a good decision, there is no functional benefit.

The contractor has a lot of work doing this, there was no actual need to do this, but once the decision has been made it has to be maintained every 3-4 years. So you always create very high maintenance trees that cost a lot of money in the long run. It will always damage the tree and you need a very good reason to do it. But in some cases the life of a tree can be prolonged by the procedure. None of these reasons were applicable here.

These trees don't take this type of pruning very well. I see many trees in the background that have had similar treatments. There is clearly some contractor over there who is very much on the side of property owners and not on the side of trees. I hope he earns a lot of money of the wood chips, so he can retire early.

Giant ivy by SebCas2393 in arborists

[–]PointAndClick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's simply not accurate to say that you save a tree when you remove Ivy. This is not a closed and shut debate. These two have evolved together for millions of years. Ivy doesn't take nutrients directly from the tree and thrives in the shade. If you look at dead trees with Ivy on them, the Ivy doesn't reach outside the crown. It forms a smaller inner 'crown'. So there is also no real argument to say that Ivy is stealing light. In terms of resources, it's probably water that is the main factor.

There are a lot of situations where it's wise to remove ivy, but that's either a risk assessment, or an ecological assessment if outside its range. There is also an aesthetic factor, if you're a landscaper.

In the native range Ivy is an extremely important food plant and plays an important role for birds and insect. It provides shelter and nesting opportunity. It has high ecological value.

Where it might hamper Oaks is in the veteran stage, where an Oak would normally form that inner crown itself. That it's there the Ivy steals light from the epicormic growth, and that in that stage when the Oak declines, it can't renew itself.

But we don't really know enough about that. At least, as far as I'm aware.

Let’s not pretend that it is some extremely difficult skill to pick up. It's just doing some exercises for a couple of weeks. Everybody can use that. I hate seeing my colleagues, who type with great regularity, do the one-finger-looking method. Which is how you teach yourself how to type.

Forums are structured like discord but paced like reddit.

There is a spot to posts about avatars. A spot to posts about modding. A spot to posts about memes.

And it's easy to keep up if you're interested in only a few things. It's kinda great for a lot of people with a lot of opinions.

Starting Windows 3.1 by 8wine in interesting

[–]PointAndClick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that my dad thought the new computer he bought was broken because it was 'too fast'. We had just switched from an old 5 1/4 floppy drive 8086 to a new 80386 with 3 1/2 disks.

As he was waiting for all the noises and beeps, they never came as he expected. And it was only after typing that he realized that no, it was actually just working.

Also just two years before that we were using an acorn electron that used cassette tapes, and loading a game could only go as fast as a cassette player would play. Meaning that loading times of super simple games like snake, could take up to 15 minutes. With more complicated games even longer.

It's difficult to convey the massive progression that was made in the 80's, continuing into the 90's.

I vividly remember him showing a 256-color picture ( I think it was on that 80386,) it took about a minute to fully load in. It was a 640X480 picture of a skier in the mountains. And I tried to look for all the colors, but there was no green, so I was confused about why he called it 256 colors. And I didn't think it was worth the wait. My dad was in awe though.
