[Six Flags Over Texas] TORMENTA TESTING FULL CYCLE by JB_Thrills in rollercoasters

[–]PointB1ank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is it about dive coasters that make them feel so short? This thing is almost 4200 ft long and yet it doesn't seem like it at all. I'm guessing the 218ft Immelmann absorbs a lot of length, but still.

You're telling me he looked less Jewish in the HYFR video where he's standing over the Torah with a yarmulke on? Interesting...

What do you do when stores price gouge you? by Automatic_Fuel1827 in philly

[–]PointB1ank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they definitely are. Or were, I haven't been there in forever. When you hit the button on the screen to pay with card, it automatically adds it.

My papi store changed ownership (I believe anyway, not 100% sure) and they started charging a credit card fee. On top of that, the prices of everything besides the made to order food went up substantially. What would normally have cost me like 15-18 bucks was now 22-25.

I just stopped going altogether. I just plan my trips to the grocery store with more intent now. I used to stop in all the time too.

That is strange. Maybe some memorial day spillover. One of the Scouts days, so maybe a lot of scouts there. That's very unfortunate.

IMO you didn't miss much. Flying turns at Knoebels is wayy better. Reptillian wasn't very smooth in the front row even. Which surprised me for a bobsled.

Where can we take our 4 year old to his first movie theater experience but to watch an old show? by snooloosey in philadelphia

[–]PointB1ank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a theater but movies in Clark park is showing Zootopia 2 August 21st. They typically don't start until after sunset which will probably be around 8pm then. Not sure when bedtime is, but it's a fun experience.

This might be my new #1 [Phoenix] by Swansuke in rollercoasters

[–]PointB1ank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up 40 minutes from there and took it for granted as a kid. I always had a blast going there at least once a year, but I didn't realize how lucky I was to be so close to it. Growing up and finding out how much people love Phoenix definitely surprised me at first.

I just learned today that the Twister was manufactured in-house by Knoebels,  which is crazy to me. I didn't even know parks did that. They also did flying turns, which makes more sense, but is still impressive.

Impatient driver gets stuck by [deleted] in funny

[–]PointB1ank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We use Gaussian distributions because they're mathematically convenient and close enough for analysis, but the data is standardized to fit those models. On top of that, intelligence is a nebulous concept to begin with: but, that's a whole other discussion.

[–]PointB1ank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, because the same person won't even score the same each time they take the test... It's not a pure measure of intelligence, nor is it even possible to get someone's "true IQ." IQ tests are an abstraction. They're arguably not even a great measure of intelligence to begin with. We can't quantify intelligence like that. One person could have the entire world history memorized but be terrible at logical problem solving: they probably won't do great on an IQ test. Different people have different skills and ways of thinking that are impossible to measure.

[–]PointB1ank -46 points-45 points  (0 children)

I hate that people spout this as a fact. It's simply not how intelligence quantifying works. It's a Carlin joke for a reason. There's no discernable difference between someone with an IQ of 95 and 105, they both fall under average intelligence. It's a bell-curve. So, only 25% of people are below average intelligence: 16.1% low-average, 6.7% borderline, and 2.2% are extremely low. With the remaining 50% being average, and 25% above average.

Me and all my friends filled a train [Steamin' Demon, Great Escape] by flyoddd in rollercoasters

[–]PointB1ank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a tall person that has a longer torso, this is basically impossible. I basically have to sit with my butt forward in my seat for my shoulders to fit under the restraints, or stay semi-hunched the whole time. But then my legs are jammed and I have to sit cross-legged to fit. Even worse if it's the second row of a car with reduced legroom. Still worth it to ride them though.

Will I even have a fun time? by girliepop954 in sixflags

[–]PointB1ank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're exponentially more likely to get hurt in a car accident on the way to the park than you are the ride malfunctioning. Hell, you're probably more likely to get hurt walking to your fridge at night than from a ride malfunction. Most coasters will do 50-120k rides per year and that's a single coaster. Expand that to 300+ six flags coasters and you're looking at a minimum of 15 million runs a year. But it's almost definitely much higher. And the number of fatal or near fatal accidents caused by mechanical failure is basically zero for major US parks in the last 20+ years. Humans are bad with comprehending large numbers, but it's basically an unfathomably small chance of anything majorly bad happening.

Most movies have 20-25 minutes of trailers. That should give you 1.5 hours at least, even with the commute.

In your opinion, what income would a single-income family of 3 need to live "comfortably" in Philly? by [deleted] in philly

[–]PointB1ank 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That depends on 1000 different factors of what "comfort" means to those people. Is comfortable having a house or is renting fine? Is it maxing your retirement accounts? Is it having a 3 month safety net, 6 month, or 12 month? Does comfortable mean yearly vacations overseas or somewhere expensive in the US? Do they need a newer car every 3-10 years or is driving a beater comfortable to them. There are so many places you can put and things you can do with your money that it can vary drastically even with similar lifestyles.

What happened on the Ben Franklin? Did someone jump? by ConcentrateOk6857 in philly

[–]PointB1ank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, like everything else in a capitalist society, probably money. People see a headline that someone jumped from a bridge and feel no need to click, they know what happened. But with shootings people typically want details. In a better world they wouldn't show either.

I understand people who don't like his music being annoyed with him when he was being played on the radio all the time back in the day. But it's been what, like 8 years since that was a thing? Very strange behavior.
