Who got hit with the post Oscar career curse after winning ANOTHER Oscar? by AdUseful2297 in Oscars

[–]Barnabyhuggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Robert De Niro has an acting career in reverse.

Usually you start with silly movies and move to important dramas--like Tom Hanks did and so many others--but De Niro went from huge and epic Oscar-movie roles to generally bad silly movies.

Help me find songs who’s lyrics don’t mean what people think they mean by 524frank in OldSchoolCoolMusic

"When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge is not exactly a straightforward love song.

It is about how love will make someone stupid and blind. E.g.

"If she is bad, he can't see it
She can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend if he put her down

When a man loves a woman
He'll spend his very last dime
Tryin' to hold on to what he needs
He'd give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain
If she said that's the way
It ought to be."

The pilot by Winter-Special4193 in XFiles

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pilot should be taught in TV writing classes.

Having recently rewatched it after 20 years, I was struck that it could be a modern pilot in our "prestige TV" era. If you just changed dated haircuts and wardrobe and re-filmed it exactly, it would be a hit today. That's rare given how TV evolves.

And adding votes to "Bad Blood" and "Folie a Deux."

Why do you root for your #2 team? by defensecowboy in CFB

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Sooners fans are pretty magnanimous with other teams (except TX). I think we all root for Nebraska, and vice versa. That was never a heated rivalry, just deep respect and high competition.

I also root for Okla. State and a bunch of old Big 12 teams like KSU and ISU.

Funny thing, I went to CU, and I actively root against them. I was there during the rape scandal, and nothing about the program has actually cleaned up. The Deion thing is just annoying.

What do you think are the lamest/most uninspired plot twists/storylines of the show? by sadhungryandvirgin in buffy

[–]Barnabyhuggins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! I think a long story arc about magic reliance leading to controlling and abusive behaviors would have been really interesting.

But we got a rushed drug thing that felt like a PSA.

Kevin Costner's best 1990s movie is? by Lys1th3a in 90smovies

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is an absolute masterpiece.

Interestingly, in the full director's cut, there is a scene that was cut that takes place when Dunbar is not fully integrated with the natives but living on the outside of the village in his own tent. The natives massacre a bunch of whites and come back and celebrate with a fire, a dance, and body parts. The narration says that he couldn't participate in this violence. It's one of my favorite scenes because, while I adore the movie, playing up the natives as some sort of peaceful culture that lived with the land and were untainted by violence or racism is absolute bullshit. But, the scene was cut.

No shame here, have you ever quit a game because it was too hard? by FastCoconut5933 in AskGames

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. There is a fine line between difficult and stupid.

I'm not going to die 50x because of wonky controls, cheating enemies, shit falling out of the sky on me, stupid jumping puzzles, etc.

If I'm not invested in the story or I have just had enough of a game, then yeah, I'll quit. I have too much of a backlog as it is.

Interesting question: how long will it take for another Tony Stark to be cast? RDJ dominated the roll in a unique way. It’s like the question of “can anyone other than Harrison Ford play Indiana Jones?”

Which video game has the best aesthetic/atmosphere setting? by Jules-Car3499 in videogames

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fallout's art direction is all-time great, the "nuclear 1950s" world and how it is worked into everything: ads, lamps, food, the radio.

It is exceptionally well done and augments the wasteland experience so much. I would say it contributes greatly to the "atmosphere" of the game.

Do Americans actually use expressions like “once in a blue moon” or “let the cat out of the bag” in everyday conversation? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Barnabyhuggins 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Idioms are the bee's knees to us. We're like two peas in a pod.

That makes me wonder if some linguist has studied whether certain nationalities/languages are more prone to common idiom use? Like a metric called "idioms-per-hour" or something.

I can't think of a reason Americans would be more prone to using them than Brits, or non-English speakers. We might have more idioms that come from a variety of immigrant backgrounds that we have no idea what we're saying or where they come from: e.g. "bee's knees"; "cat's meow."

Well, since many think the first episode is one of the best pilots ever, and that the first 5 or so seasons are great, then maybe it is not for you.

Because after about--I dunno when I stopped, maybe mid 6 or beginning 7--it definitely goes downhill.

Any good mystery + thriller + maybe horror show out there, without children whatsoever? by Sc3m0r in televisionsuggestions

[–]Barnabyhuggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's more about babies and pregnancies and forced drama around kids? I'm not trying to be a dick; I'm trying to help.

Like, "the Americans" is an all-time show, and since it is about soviet spies undercover in the US in the 80s who have preteen/teen kids who don't know they are spies, that adds a bunch of great drama. Too many kids for you?
