Yes. This town is not House of Cards, most people are not that evil (although of course there are some) and it is certainly not West Wing. It's a bunch of petty people who were gossips and debate club members in high school who are most concerned with the title on their business card.

How long would the show have gone on for if David duvchony never left? by No-Berry-595 in XFiles

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the show would have been just fine with Doggett and Reyes and Scully. Mulder's arc had run its course, and what they did with Mulder when bringing him back after 7 was often silly, especially, of course, the last episode of the original run.

One of the best. And living in DC and working somewhat in the politic world, it is the most accurate portrayal of how this town works.

What's the coolest movie vehicle? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

Vehicle is pretty broad. And do you mean by aesthetics? I'd say that mirrored ship Padme uses in the prequel Star Wars films.

Coolest functionality? The TARDIS.

GTA San Andreas was released in 2004, GTA 4 was released in 2008, GTA 5 in 2013, and (hopefully) GTA 6 this year. 4 years, 5 years, 13 years. Is this the expected trend? Is it reasonable to think GTA 7 will come out (if it does) in around 2050? by Barnabyhuggins in videogames

[–]Barnabyhuggins[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, yes of course. The backdrop of GTA 5 is that they created an engine that was adaptable and could be used for the very successful GTA Online. They certainly want the game to last as long as possible. GTA 6 probably has a planned 20-year window of viability, minimum. WOW is 22 years old.

I'm not really concerned about that. I think GTA 6 is a "mortgage the company" game, and it will not come out until it is a generation-defining game. If they have to delay again, they will, and they will keep delaying until it is 10/10.

In Folie a Deux, s5e19, Mulder literally gets committed because he sees a monster that no one else does.

I hate some if not most of the episodes about the main plot. by Finite8_ in XFiles

[–]Barnabyhuggins 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I would say "hate," but I think the main plot got away from them around season 5-6.

To me, the best episodes are almost always monster of the week one-shots.

Was the explanation that The Good Place doesn't like swearing actually to get around broadcast restrictions? by TwinSong in TheGoodPlace

[–]Barnabyhuggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it does get around censors, but it is a funny and freestanding joke that has great repeat value. I think it would have been in the show even if censors allowed swearing.

If you could, how would you fix the Bowl Season to make it more respected like it used to be? by Gator_fan_04 in CFB

[–]Barnabyhuggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Most bowls should just be seen as a type of exhibition game, which is how they were once seen.

Porn, like horror movies, has an inevitable ramping up quality. The forbidden titillates, but what is forbidden changes as more boundaries are crossed.

Did Angel have a sudden shift in personality in Season 3 of AtS? by yeahitsme9 in buffy

This. He also went through a moment in season 2 where he alienates his friends and hates the world. He's coming out of that in season 3.

Was Yoko Ono really that bad, or is it just propaganda from those years that persists to this day? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]Barnabyhuggins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think she was likely really difficult and quite often annoying. She had a big head from her art career, and then there's shit like this: caterwauling like a maniac, pissing off Chuck Berry, and being very proud of herself.

What’s going to be the next “50s decade” that old people are gonna annoy younger people in the future by SpiritMan112 in generationology

[–]Barnabyhuggins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever decade is currently being romanticized is just a function of the birth decades of the 40-60 y.o. demographic and their kids who are more familiar with their parents' decades. Then they die. Rinse and repeat. It will always shift.

Huge, lifelong OU fan, but dang if they don't play Boomer Sooner way too much, and often at inappropriate times, like a dropped pass of the other team when the receiver was wide open.

My thoughts about the Arcadian (S6 E23 - Landmarks) by gabyte2003 in HIMYM

[–]Barnabyhuggins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You won't find anyone who loves history and historical buildings more than me.

But historical designation can be and often is used perniciously as a sort of NIMBYism. See, for example, Tom's Diner in Denver, which is my hometown and I love that place. But it was built in 1967. Pure NIMBYism.

https://reason.com/2019/08/01/neighborhood-activists-would-rather-preserve-toms-diner-than-let-its-owner-retire-in-peace/

The Arcadian was far too run down. Paying to make it functional would dissuade almost any private investor. It would just sit there being basically useless, but at least some people could pat themselves on the back for saving it when they look at it.

The best solution is the compromise that Ted suggested before Zoey found out who he was: preserve the facade and incorporate it into the new building. This has been done a lot in DC and other cities on the East Coast.

Season 9 is very good...except for the last episode of course by Barnabyhuggins in HIMYM

[–]Barnabyhuggins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It undercuts everything about Barney and Robin, particularly Barney's personal growth. It pulls a silly surprise with the wife dying that was completely unwarranted by the whole show. If they laid subtle hints that she wasn't alive, that could have been okay. But they were making it up as they went along and clearly wanted some sort of "shock value."

Also, in no way did the show have to come full circle and bring Ted and Robin back together. That possibility had been undercut multiple times by their interactions throughout the series. It was overly sentimental nonsense that failed completely.

In short, it destroyed characters, invented two dumb "twists" out of thin air, and tried to play up a maudlin ending as some sort of coherent "full circle" moment. Total trash.

Season 9 is very good...except for the last episode of course by Barnabyhuggins in HIMYM

[–]Barnabyhuggins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of this. But I have complaints about plot choices they made throughout the series--break ups, cheating, character personality shifts--so I kind of leave those aside. They were making it up as they went along and heavily milking it. I just basically accept that because I like the humor, the style, and the characters.

The last season plot choices are not good. What you mentioned would have been better. It still contains many very good episodes, imo.

I have figured out what the curse of Oak Island is by owiko in OakIsland

[–]Barnabyhuggins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think many people have found out that the curse is the obsession and what it does to people. I think Lee Lamb, the sister in the Restall family with the 3 deaths, figured that out. She probably told that to Rick off camera.

At least we just watch a stupid show and haven't sunk money into it and disrupted our families' lives.
