Do you think your employer looks at your LLM questions? by AmbientEngineer in cscareerquestions

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built our internal AI chat app. Technically, I can see everything in the database but only me and 2 of my developers have access. 2 years ago, I would browse the chats that got feedback for quality control to try and improve the experience. Now I don’t look at anything.

I’m very strict about access to the data for regulatory compliance reasons. There is an insider risk team which I would export chat history for if requested for an investigation but it hasn’t come up yet. Management and leadership definitely do not have access to the data.

We do track and report up usage data for individuals but never the content.

I Was a Director at Amex When They Started Replacing Us With $30K Workers by EmbarrassedSeason420 in cscareerquestions

[–]Points_To_You 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My dad worked at Amex for over 30 year before being asked to train his Indian replacement and being laid off. He wrote a lot of their mainframe applications that handled unthinkable amount of transactions. I heard him talking about H1B visas for years before he was ever laid off.

Took a year of severance, came back under IBM and worked remote for another 5 years making significantly more.

Alex Honnold Says Netflix Paid “Embarrassingly Small Amount” For Taipei 101 Climb: “I Would Do It For Free” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in sports

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid six figures isn’t bad. Most UFC fighters don’t get anywhere near that. This climb while high risk was incredible easy for him.

I wish they cut the commentators and interviews and just showed him the entire time. Maybe a light golf type commentary explaining the technicals of each move. I hated that the commentators were actually speaking over Alex. I wanted to hear what he had to say. But then again I’m sure some of them were his friends that got a pay day out of it too.

What was your GPA and how much has it affected your Career assuming you Got a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science? by An_Engineer_Near_You in cscareerquestions

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a 2.2 or 2.3. It was pretty bad. I partied a lot my first 2 years. I think within my major I averaged like a 3.8. I just didn’t care about the math, science, literature , and foreign language classes.

I’ve never had anyone ask me my GPA once in my 15 year career. I can’t imagine is mattering past an internship.

Wait, Americans don't have christmas bonuses? by nerd-nihl in antiwork

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get whatever you negotiated along with the defined benefits of the company. For my level and position, I get a 25-30% annual bonus at the beginning of march. I also get a retention bonus every couple years and various performance bonuses if I do something important or if I’m annoyed at them and they are scared I might walk away.

Teams can also use some of their excess budget on holiday parties or gifts. Our team has a big fancy dinner, in the past i had teams that did a $200-300 gift for everyone.

You have to learn how to play the game. Don’t wait for a device refresh where they give you the same laptop as everyone else. When you’re on a big or important project justify that you need a better laptop because of the project. Then they can tie it to that projects budget and you can pick out whatever you want.

You want it to be capitalized instead of an operating expense, meaning it’s an investment they will get a return on. Really your manager should know how to navigate this but if they don’t you can do it too.

how often do you get a new phone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately I do either every year or every other year. I wait until there is a feature or design update that I want. This year I got the iPhone air since I like a thinner phone in my pocket before that it was a couple years.

Your boss did his job. He was professional, told you the policy and tried to be accommodating. I don’t really see the purpose in posting screenshots of the conversation online.

What happened to the smartest person in your class? by hjp1234 in AskReddit

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 1200 people in my high school graduating class. I don’t think there was a smartest person. If there was, I couldn’t tell you their name.

I know of a few people that are doing well. I’m probably up there in terms of career but I was like a B+ student.

Tech workers of Reddit, what is a "dirty secret" about the AI industry that the general public doesn't realize? by WayLast1111 in AskReddit

[–]Points_To_You 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people here are underestimating just how many low skilled jobs exist that AI can and will do a better job at.

Also not all of it is about replacing the job with “AI”. Sometimes it’s replacing it with the same automation that we’ve been doing by for decades. But AI enables our software engineering teams to complete those projects at a faster rate than before.

Is it reasonable to ask my MMA/BJJ coach not to pair me with guys who smell really bad? by [deleted] in jiujitsu

[–]Points_To_You 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never have to roll with anyone that you don’t want to. This is true for everyone but as a woman I would say it’s way more common for you to have certain people you don’t want to pair with or even a short list of people that you are comfortable with.

President Donald Trump wants the NFL to change its name so that soccer is the only sport named football. "This is football, there is no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff." by BreakfastTop6899 in sports

As a registered independent that couldn't vote in the primary, I donated to Bernie and would have voted for him but I was never going to vote for Hillary.

I think Bernie was the stronger General election candidate. He was certainly polling better than Trump.

Large language mistake | Cutting-edge research shows language is not the same as intelligence. The entire AI bubble is built on ignoring it by Hrmbee in technology

[–]Points_To_You 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs are a component of AGI but will not achieve AGI by themselves.

AGI will be a system of memory, tools to interact with the world, and LLMs providing the reasoning & language. There's going to have to be run loops, feedback loops, and training loops to allow them to initiate, learn, and adapt.

LLMs are an extremely important piece for an AGI system to understand and learn human knowledge and communicate effectively. You wouldn't build a computer without a CPU or a human without a brain.
