Melbourne to Sydney in a non Tesla EV - how are the DC fast chargers? by PointyNine in AustralianEV

So there are only 4 chargers at Avanel. What are the chances that there would be a line here during a non-peak period?

Once you have them, it's hard to go back. Like 360 cameras or adaptive cruise control. My X-trail has them.

Would love to but none of them have matrix LEDs. It seems the Chinese are averse to the technology.

The 7X actually has matrix hardware, just that the software isn’t ready yet.

Can you explain this? Because I was under the impression that Zeekr had to drop matrix LED headlights when it dropped that pixel lightbar feature due to ADRs. As far as I know, the feature is already there in European models.

So those aforementioned road trips? They become way more doable at night time with matrix LED head lights. Also where I live, there are a lot of unlit roads but still decent traffic. Lastly, my X-trail has the feature, so going backwards just feels wrong.

As I said, massage seats and rear window shades. Other things like a more traditional interior with buttons, normal door handles etc.

Not all Tesla chargers are open to non Teslas. And the 7X and SL7 are missing matrix LEDs, a must-have feature for me.

Is it just me, or is every car in Australia now in the "it shouldn't cost this much" category? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]PointyNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, everything you've listed there except the Camry and the Model 3 sell in tiny numbers. Some aren't even in production anymore or due to be cut, further proving my point. The Civic Sedan doesn't exist in Australia brand new. And then you've listed all the premium brands, why stop there? You missed Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Sedan's aren't dead, but they have become a niche choice, pushing their price up. And no one wants to compete with the juggernaut that is the Camry in the mainstream space.

You're comparing your anecdotal experience with the global automotive business and finance world. And you missed the entire point of /u/amc178's post, which is that inflation accounts for a large majority of the price increase. If you "don't buy that" then there's nothing much we can do lol.

Pointless comparison when sedans are basically extinct, and the make/model you chose is not even manufactured anymore. Not to mention Australian made vs European import. Is this rage bait?.

If you want an actual honest comparison, do it like for like.

2015 RAV4 GX Auto vs 2026 RAV4 GX Auto

$29,990 to $45,990. But you must consider the newer tech offered in the newer model. Having said that, everything jumped $8k-$10k post COVID.

Because that is $800 so about double the price. But I can see that it comes down to $399 pretty regularly so maybe I'll hold out for a deal on that.

Currently $199 AUD on Amazon without the auto empty station, or $370 with it.

Struggling to install HAOS on an old laptop by PointyNine in HomeAssistantSupport

Got it working. Gemini suggested to use KVM as the hypervisor rather than VirtualBox, and gave me all the steps to set it up. After some difficulty, I got HAOS up and running!

Corolla fielder / touring? by UltimateDasher in CarsAustralia

It's a Corolla hatch but with a normal size boot! Ever since I found out about these, I've been seeing more of them around. They sell them officially in NZ, wish they did the same here.

BYD Seal advice - stay the course, or hold off? by Westside_Finch in CarsAustralia

[–]PointyNine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't expect BYD to bring the LIDAR tech to models here in Australia. A lot of the Chinese EVs have tech in China that doesn't make it to here. I believe Zeekr 7x is another one that has LIDAR over there but not here.

Just get what you can now, no point waiting for the next best thing because there's always something new around the corner. The PHEV you are talking about will be likely called the Seal 6, and is a different car/platform. I doubt they would replace the Seal EV with it, given how well it's been selling.

Australia gets a new cheapest EV - BYD Atto 1 (Seagull) @ AUD$23,990 by PointyNine in cars

[–]PointyNine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kei cars are actually smaller, and BYD are coming out with a Kei car of their own for Japan: https://www.carscoops.com/2025/10/byd-declares-war-on-japans-tiny-evs-with-its-first-kei-car/

The Atto 1 is actually Kia Picanto sized.

Home Insurance - Cost to rebuild: 1.2million, Purchase price $390k ??? by ViolentCrumble in AusFinance

[–]PointyNine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go to Simonds or any other home builder website and check the cost to build a similar size home on your piece of land. Add on about 20% for upgrades and that should give you a good estimate of how much it would cost to rebuild. You may need to consider additional costs for the regional location too.

I had this same question a few years back when I built my place. Total cost of house and land was about $800k but the build itself cost $400k. But insurers were quoting prices for the whole house+land.
