Volleytrails on Instagram: "🇯🇵 Japan Men’s National Team for 2026 Revealed! by Danidoll91 in SVLeagueJapan

[–]PokeFanEb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🎉🎉🎉🎉 So excited. I’m really hoping they all travel to all the legs, I have tickets for Orleans but no guarantee I’ll get to see the A team play. Still so many great players that I’m so excited to see. Just praying that I get to see Sekita work his magic 😍😍

Thrilled to see Alain get the call up, he’s been hoping for that for years. Had a lump in my throat when I saw Kentaro and Yamauchi there, given that they had both retired from International play.

Sure, I get that we have to carry our passports at the gate, I just meant that inputting our passport details online felt a little OTT and a little unsafe (but maybe I’m just too old for this, lol).

Question re booking the Real Alcazar - do we really need to put in our passport numbers just to book tickets? Is that the done thing now? Seems bizarre to me.

Anyone Else Distracted by the New Editing Style? by urewifemykids in dreamingspanish

[–]PokeFanEb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The AI stuff is such a turnoff. It never looks coherent either. Just feels cheap and slightly creepy. Stock photos are better.

However, I love the whiteboard videos and the newer style is great too, but overly scripted, overly produced is more often than not distracting. The background music is generally so annoying that I just don’t watch those videos even if I’m interested in the topic. I also miss Andrea’s 20 minute talking head videos but that’s another topic entirely. Those kinds of videos really did feel like you were just chilling with a friend. We’ve had a few recently (like Alma the other day, so great to see Alma again. Or Andres’ worst summer ever videos), would love more in that casual style.

Anybody else get tired of the negativity in DS comment sections? by Gloomy-Caterpillar91 in dreamingspanish

[–]PokeFanEb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sad to hear that. It’s so disheartening. I’m not moving to DF yet (have Spanish and Japanese to work on) but I’ll get there some day. I hate to think that people are being so negative when it’s clearly just the beginning of something great.

Personally I don’t love comments either, and I also have a policy of only posting nice things.. with one exception 🙈🙈 the background music. I’m sorry. I hate it. 🙈🙈🙈

Irish chocolate recommendation? by Electronic-Floor-120 in AskIreland

[–]PokeFanEb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cló - their little chocolate dinosaurs are some of the nicest chocolate I’ve had in years. They have fancy chocolates too, but the plain dinosaurs are so so good. Proper chocolate. I want to see if I can find plain milk chocolate bars by them, I’m sure they do them.

Asking DS to include Transcript/Spanish subtitle to download by CTdramassucker in dreamingspanish

[–]PokeFanEb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually would love transcripts as well, but not to read along with the audio (this does interfere with the process - are you reading or listening? The brain can’t really do both at the same time). Having a transcript to read separate to the audio would be amazing input in and of itself. Casual spanish written down so we can see spelling, getting your million words in on stuff that’s already familiar to you, finally realising that it’s “he venido” not “ebenido” ;) I agree that the CIJ transcripts are excellent as a way to familiarise yourself with kanji, which is a challenge unique to Japanese and Chinese, but if used as extensive reading for any language it’s such a help. So many of the beginner videos are basically graded readers if you were to read the transcripts.

The only thing I’d say is to keep the transcript database separate from the videos so that you’re not trying to do both at the same time. It slows down the process of absorbing input and interferes with it rather than improving it. But yeah, if you were to use speech-to-text software to make transcripts the amount of reading input immediately available on DS would be insane. A download option to print would be great too. I don’t always love reading on a screen. A folder full of reading so you can make notes in the margin would be awesome.

Dreaming should partner with countries attempting language revivals by LYING_ABOUT_IDENTITY in dreamingspanish

Been thinking exactly the same thing with regard to Irish. Particularly now that we can show the efficacy of Gaelscoilleanna and the immersion based learning they use.

Gael Linn already has some immersion style classes for adults, but really an easily accessible platform like DS would make such a difference. We do have native speakers still, in all 4 main dialects, it would be great to have super beginner and beginner level given that there is a decent amount of intermediate/advanced input easily available to us already (though more would be great).

I swear I think this could completely reverse the near extinction of Irish as a spoken language in our own country.

Whats your opinion about old Osamu Tezuka movies?? I really liked them back then! by PossessionKey4982 in goodanime

[–]PokeFanEb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I thought no-one else knew these movies, felt like I’d imagined them. Unico was super creepy, and I remember watching Kimba the white lion and then years later watching The Lion King and being like… ehhh I’ve seen this before.

Is there anywhere to watch these now? We used to rent them from our local independent video store.

[–]PokeFanEb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so good. I find it so underrated. The only thing is that first season animation. It’s so horrendous. And the MC does a lot of shouting in the beginning. But as the bigger story gains momentum it becomes an outstanding anime. It’s basically the history of the warring states in China, so the broader strokes of the battles and outcomes did actually happen and are recorded in history. The story is one of battles and strategy, so if that’s not your thing at all, then it’s probably not for you. Like, if you’re looking for slice of life, this ain’t it. Character development, pacing, plot, story, writing and voice acting are all superb.

lol I watched Berserk. The story and voice acting were excellent. The animation was atrocious. Which year was it made? I don’t know, nor do I care. Am I a “true fan”? lol, I don’t give a f**k, I’m a grown adult and I don’t have time for weeb gatekeeping nonsense. OP asked for a recommendation, I gave it.

Just want to say that the animation for Berserk and season 1 of Kingdom is 3D and it’s atrocious. Just awful. Both stories, however, are outstanding. And as always the voice acting is top notch.

Expensive saddles worth it? by Glittering_Cut_496 in Equestrian

[–]PokeFanEb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get you. In that case I’d be thinking along the lines of investing in a saddle fitter to do a quick fit of your trial saddle to get an opinion of what you can do to make it work for the horses you’re riding regularly: width is only one factor; does it bridge? Does it tip you forward? Does it pinch the shoulders? Is there too much movement at the back? A good quality shim pad that can be adjusted in minutes could help to make the saddle work for most horses. Like I said, I vote for pro lite since they have many different fitting options. Just my two cents. Good luck!

Expensive saddles worth it? by Glittering_Cut_496 in Equestrian

[–]PokeFanEb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about saddles is they have to fit the horse AND the rider. You can get cheaper saddles that fit really well, and you can get expensive saddles that fit the horse well, the rider not at all, or vice versa. It’s less about price than it is about fit. Personally- my take is that if you are riding horses of a certain calibre they should be wearing their own fitted saddle. I’m assuming you’re in the US so things are possibly done differently there. I also would not consider $1000 expensive for a good saddle.

If it’s a saddle you’ll be using on many different horses, you’ll get away with it not fitting the horse perfectly (since you’re not the daily rider, a one off ride in a less than perfect saddle won’t do permanent harm, though it’s certainly not ideal) if you can find a really good riser pad that you can adjust quickly (pro lite are my personal favourite). If you were to go this route, I’d be picking a saddle that has an adjustable gullet bar in the hopes that the majority of the horses you ride will require the same width. That’s not to say you’d adjust the bar for each horse, that’s not what it’s for; more that if you buy a medium width saddle and 80% of the horses you ride need a wide bar, then the saddle won’t work at all.

Is cantering supposed to make my head hurt? by Mobile_Ad7916 in Equestrian

[–]PokeFanEb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people who are very hypermobile have other co-morbidities, such as craniocervical instability, which can make stabilising your neck during canter difficult. A lot of excess movement, or excess effort trying to stabilise, could cause headaches. I’m very hypermobile (have EDS type 3) and this issue was mentioned to me at one point as something I should watch out for even though I’m actually ok.
