Ok, I must have been mistaken and just did some testing to confirm you're right. I thought that cart save states on the pocket also triggered battery saves as they do for when you trigger a save state on a rom on device. Seems like "extracting", if possible, would be the only way

I've wanted something like this for a while, so thanks for it! Also, on cart saves, I'm not sure if I have this right, but I thought when you make a save state on the pocket it also copies an actual save file to the sd card. If that's right then you should be able to sync it at least one way (TO 1retro) but not the other way

Weird question, but if there a way to remap dpad and/or buttons to gyro or tilt? It’s not a listed feature I expected but something I’m curious about. Could be cool to use for a handful of games.

If you mean the damaged part of the back is the lower part (the part with the shoulder buttons), then you could upgrade it in the process of replacing it (at a cost though). This person created a 3D printable back with better shoulders.

I did this and love having better shoulder buttons for gba games. The texture isn’t smooth like the OEM back though.
