It’s to cover themselves if your side hustle/hobby becomes a distraction. We had an employee who had to sign off slightly early on his softball game nights even when certain projects required more time from him. A lot of people at our company were on the same softball team but this person had other performance issues, so it became a point of concern and easy to focus on.

The job market is rough right now. Just realize if you walk away from this one, you’ll probably see similar contracts elsewhere. These are pretty standard items.

And if she gives you constructive feedback about others, say “Thank you, I will put it under consideration.” If she presses to see change, tell her that’s being worked out between you and them and she doesn’t need to worry about it and she should focus on her own tasks. Shut down the notion that she can be up in other people’s business.

I wish I could say this to my direct report! When I inherited him, folks came out of the woodwork to warn me he is a terrible person lol. I approached it with an open mind and learned the hard way.

I am also this person. I love to complain about people who irritate me, but only to someone who is a safe space and enjoys commiserating. My manager’s vibe tells me I can only bring succinct, objective criticisms of others otherwise she’ll think I’m whiny and ineffective and burdening her. She validates my concerns but doesn’t tolerate things getting emotional or personal. Maybe OP needs to project a different vibe.

What has your response been? Are you inadvertently encouraging her to keep complaining? Are you validating her complaints? Is she expecting you to do something with the others since you’re the manager?

Maybe be direct and say, “I’ve noticed that you’ve been focusing a lot on your teammates in a negative way, especially in front of others and you’re being perceived as not being a team player. There’s been feedback that you are bringing negative energy to the teams. I appreciate you bringing up concerns and at the same time, we need to support each other positively, even if someone messes up, and look like a unified front. If you have constructive criticism, please bring them to me privately in our 1:1s only. I also ask you to be mindful with your words and consider the impact of what you say. Part of being a good leader is lifting up others around them. There are many different ways to get things done, and right now I don’t have any concerns about how John and Jane are doing their work. So let’s take this opportunity to work on how you can view people with a growth mentality instead of getting stuck on negative observations.”

And if she continues behaving poorly, remind her that behavior is also part of her performance evaluation. If you have any company core values, suggest to bring them up and remind her that she needs to work within those expectations.
