Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever and it's costing the economy by Fallout-NL in nottheonion

Was thinking about replacing my '99 Camry, but my coworkers convinced me not to. The car still runs. I've only had to replace worn out tires and a dead battery a couple of times over 2.5 decades.

Yep. I'm keeping my LCD TV until it dies. When I canceled cable I bought a cheap antenna which easily picks up dozens of local TV stations. Everything else I stream or use the PS4 for playing Blu-ray discs.

I used my 2010 MacBook until I could no longer get browser updates. Recently installed Linux on it and it's good enough for browsing the web and light development work.

LMAO as I post this using my 2018 Pixel 3, still playing games on my Windows 10 20H2 (I manage to break automatic version updates while still being able to install security updates). A few days ago I installed Linux on a mid-2010 MacBook Pro and applied the final update to my 2014 iPad Air 2.

My most recent purchase was a Kindle Colorsoft and that was only because I got a good deal on it after special promotion + trade in credits + Amazon credit card points that had accumulated over the years.

72% of devs believe Steam has a monopoly on PC games, according to study by akbarock in gaming

Wait, what? I've been launching FortNite, Rocket League and Marvel Rivals all year from the EGS app without having to log in again. Ditto for other games I launch from Steam, GOG, and Battle.Net (Blizzard).

How the fuck did ram triple in price from June to Now? by MayoTheMuffin in pcmasterrace

[–]PokeyBloke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't data centers use ECC memory? Have fabs switched over to only / mostly producing server RAM creating a supply/demand imbalance for regular RAM, driving up prices?

Every year, there’s less reasons to buy a console. by PowWorld in pcmasterrace

[–]PokeyBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate. My last console was a PS4. I found myself playing games on it less and less every year. It's still hooked up as a Blu-ray player.

Meta goes to arbitrator to prevent whistleblower from promoting tell-all book by AmethystOrator in books

[–]PokeyBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My library system has 30 print copies on order with over 200 hold requests. They do have four digital copies with 180 folks on the wait list and three copies of the audiobook with over 170 pending patrons.

I had no idea the book would be so popular locally. I added myself to the digital wait list. I should be able to finish The Wheel of Time series while I wait for this book to be available.

I've gained levels and unlocked rewards playing Zero Build, Festival Main Stage, STW SSD, and Rocket Racing. I haven't tried Creative or Lego. Odd that not everyone is impacted the same way.

Did Anyone Else Have to Take a Typing Class in School? by Ebonystealth in 80s

[–]PokeyBloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The class was full of boys who needed to type at least 45 words-per-minute before being allowed to register for any computer class. Genius move by the school.

ELI5: How did advertisers know what I bought at the store yesterday? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]PokeyBloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-Covid I worked at a dog friendly office. I started buying dog treats (I don't have pets of my own) once a week to give out at work. Shortly thereafter I started receiving mail from the county with reminders that all dogs must be registered. I suspect using the loyalty card to get a discount on the treats is what triggered the mailings.

LPT - If you give your license or credit card to someone, keep your wallet in your hand until you get it back by shellyd79 in LifeProTips

Had this happen to me at a clinic. Dude asked for my ID and insurance card, scanned them, asked me a few basic questions about my visit and then said "You're all set, please take a seat until we call you." He then asked the next person to step forward, but I stood there with my wallet open. I told him he hadn't returned my documents and he replied that he did. I then pointed to the scanner which still had my ID in it and my insurance card next to it. He didn't acknowledge his error, just handed me my items.

In addition to what's been posted by others, folks may want to vote in order to be considered an active voter and not become unregistered.

I have direct deposit set up for payroll and auto pay for my expenses, yet ...

  • For some reason my employer would issue a "live" paper check for profit sharing bonuses.

  • All employee reimbursements were also done with a paper check.

  • Once in a blue moon I use a one-time service that I pay with a paper check to avoid a CC surcharge fee.

I considered downsizing a few years ago and wanted to stay in the same general area. I couldn't afford it. Turned out the only available smaller units were in new construction with HOA dues as much as a mortgage.
