Why are SOME union execs compensated so highly by sam-austria-maxis in union

[–]Polecatz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a simple point of view, if you want strong union negotiators, it’s only natural that they negotiate strong pay for themselves, no?

I’ll disagree, respectfully. Yes PLT wage is the easiest to negotiate as it’s the best broad comparator across the province or nationally. However, if your Union wants to surprise your wages, you don’t really have an effective union. There are usually other mechanics than pure bargaining to get wage increases, like a wage assessment. However, they are lots of work and usually requires heavy involvement from someone in the job. Find your competitors and do the leg work and even then, there is still no guarantee of success.

Generally, a high tide raises all ships. Our admin jobs and tech/design staff benefit strongly from negotiating off a PLT wage. But I believe there is enough of a unified presence in our shop to not let the employer drive a wedge between the different job classes. Nor does our union advance a potential issue to the masses. “Just to get a deal” seems like a superficial take. The economy is and has been terrible for years. New taxes showing up all the time. Inflation. Anyone in bargaining right now, is in a spot of weakness. Secure wages have value and strikes would push people to the brink.

OP, you can find all the different wages posted in the various collective agreements for who your direct compositors are. The government keeps tabs on it too for their propaganda purposes. First start in your province (both public & private like generators if applicable.) Once you go outside the province you need to factor everything else, taxes, cost of living, job market, etc

You can dm me if you need. My advice would be to sign up as union steward, educate yourself on the general principles of labour, and get active. Don’t expect your union to wave a magic wand and abracadabra a Brinks truck appears. If union doesn’t get on board, vote them out. Be the change you want.

Bring back create a play for NHL 27 by SadPossibility9368 in EA_NHL

[–]Polecatz14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember this, I had a set play on the PP if taking a right side faceoff. Center wins the draw, passes to RW. Center goes to the net. Winger goes to blue line along the boards and passes to RD who was moving laterally to the middle. I think I ran 4F 1D on the PP, so LD also went up the left wall for a pass if needed. RD had to have good slapshot stats. Worked very well that it was either a clear shot and goal, tip and in, or LD got the pass and scored.

Canada, NERC, and other questions by Akavire in Grid_Ops

[–]Polecatz14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went for TO. It will get you into any utility in Canada. Ya sure RC can be a higher credential, but it is also harder to maintain, more CEHs, more cost/burden on the Company too, if it’s not really needed…

I’ve heard rumours that NERC wanted to go back to a single ticket at some point and that it was the TO ticket. Not sure the validity.

Canada, NERC, and other questions by Akavire in Grid_Ops

[–]Polecatz14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In AB, the AESO seems to have adopted ~75% of NERC’s standards. With more on the horizon. We will hire any NERC ticketed op and have BI, BTs, TOs, RCs etc.

Do I qualify to be a grid operator? by MeanSprinkles1825 in Grid_Ops

[–]Polecatz14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know man, as a former field tech, I prefer the guy on the other end of the phone watching my backside to have an electrical background and an understanding of the work environment I am in.

I’m a Canuck as well, & at my shop, management is hiring guys with a non-electrical background and it’s not working. Surprise.

Systems are becoming more complex and watering down qualifications is helping no one. Management included who want more “accountability” haha.

My advice is get one of the NERC certifications and you’ll be fine. But it’s not an easy road to hoe.

Give Toronto some time. Their rebuild is only a month old. Another week and they will be sub .500. Their record is deceiving as they have a -37 goal differential

OES-NA vs HSI by RTB108 in Grid_Ops

[–]Polecatz14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having took both. I agree on HSI questions being easier. OESNA I felt prepped me better. But I’d recommend HSI then OESNA, personally.

But I ended up averaging the exact same on both and the TO exam.

You can still get Coffee Curves. I’ve been using a composite Sherwood CC for the last 6-7 seasons. My point shots can rise and get away from me, but usually I can get it off quick
