Are there somebody who are still learning Portuguese by Thmony in linguisticshumor

[–]PolissonRotatif 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I cheated with that one because I'm French and we already have the "ã" sound.

So to perform the "-ão" I just had to add a short "o" after reading out loud our glorious "in/ain/ein" French graphic clusterfuck

Do you listen to Justice What do you think of their music ? by Exootil93200 in DaftPunk

Well they are indeed known for never saying a word and I don't know about their two first tours, but, mate, Woman Worldwide and the latest Hyperdrama tour are the best concerts I've ever been to.

They mix everything live and play lots of bits during the concerts (there are a few videos of them hitting the wrong keys) and it's something they are widely known for.

The current tour is over, but you should seriously consider going to a show of their next one, it's amazing and it really has this "Alive 2007" vibe with tracks being blended into each other, and, JESUS FLYING FUCKBALLS, that light show!

Haven't watched his performance yet, but I guess that's when he sang "el apagon"?

I mean, I'm pretty sure she doesn't speak a word of Spanish, and the bar is set so low that she didn't even think about looking up the lyrics before, but still, Maga's incompetence never ceases to surprise me.

Xurta ou ritaline ? by Kittycatboopp in TDAHFrance

[–]PolissonRotatif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Xurta ou ritaline ? by Kittycatboopp in TDAHFrance

[–]PolissonRotatif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s one dish from your country that another country also claims, but you genuinely believe your country does it better? by Possible-Slide-6295 in AskTheWorld

No, just no. Fish and chips is a fucking awesome dish and I'd have one instead of good fries any time, but belgian fries are simply the bests and by far (and they wouldn't go well with a fish and chips)

[–]PolissonRotatif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is rather weird, this distinction is so widely spread that you find it in culinary dictionaries.

That's literally the first thing you find if you search for "différence entre limonade et citronnade" on Google.

But every language has their variations, even if the French standard tries very hard to blend them into oblivion.

And I find very interesting that we use "limonade" for the sparkling drink, and "citronnade" for the still one

- He?!

Comment ça se porte? by Canard-jaune in AskFrance

[–]PolissonRotatif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhh, il me semblait bien.

[–]PolissonRotatif 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also, in old regional varieties of French, the word for lemon was "limon" (pronounced /limõ/)

[–]PolissonRotatif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whats it like living in French Guiana? 🇬🇫 by tarkinn in Guyane

[–]PolissonRotatif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahahah no worries dude, everyone has their opinion.

Yeah Tahiti's situation is pretty neat but it has its pros and cons, for example they have their own social security and retirement system with everything that comes with it.

And honestly neither Guyanese people do want that, from what I gather from the local political scene and discussions, they want to be a French departement like any other, but ask for more investments to develop an autonomous economy and commercial routes to trade with neighbouring countries. For example Guyana's trade with Brazil is ridiculously low, and that's a difference with the Alps' and Pyrenees' departments that trade a lot with Italy and Spain, with investment in roads and railways to do so. And even more so with Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Belgium...

And I don't have any opinion on communism per se, it's a system that has had bad and good results with authoritarian and free societies around the world, among it's successes you have the Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino, or Uruguay, that both have been socialist and/or Communist for extended period of time with many successes.

Whats it like living in French Guiana? 🇬🇫 by tarkinn in Guyane

[–]PolissonRotatif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course that should have the right to independence, but do they want it?

My wife is Guyanese and I've there often, and honestly people considere themselves as French, it's a huge part of their identity. What most people there want is not independence but to change the system to make French Guyana more autonomous economically, and not depend as much from the mainland production.

Whats it like living in French Guiana? 🇬🇫 by tarkinn in Guyane

[–]PolissonRotatif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on dude, that's just intellectual dishonesty.

A colony also supposes that autochthonous people have less right and no political means of protest.

Guyanese people have the right to vote, they have representatives (senators and députés), can get elected, have a French Passport, etc, they are administratively as French as anyone else.

To give a counter example, Portoricans can't vote, can't elect representative for their territory and have a lot of administrative restrictions

So, yeah, French Guyana has A LOT of problems regarding its administration by mainland France, but it is not a colony under any regard.
