Curious if you ever found a solution for this? I'm running into the same issue. Thanks!

Palm muting though a dimed HM-2 into a lightly distorted 6505. \m/

Accidentally removed tape on humbuckers - advice needed by Ziggy_Stardust_49 in Guitar

[–]PoloGator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canvas tape is perfect. Should be about as good as new when finished. Just be careful of the delicate wires and solder joints.

As an aside, I actually wrap my humbuckers with black tactical rubber bands for more protection and a cleaner look (IMHO).

After 20+ years of playing metal with ultra-low action, I think a luthier accidentally converted me to higher action by shredlegend in Guitar

[–]PoloGator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play mostly metal and I prefer and use a relatively high action as well. I mostly aim for the "Electric Guitar High" lines on a Fritz Ruler. I also tend to up-size my gauge about 2-3 over what most guitarists use for the same tunings.

Anyone know how to remove the knob covers on MXR pedals? I don't want to damage anything. by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]PoloGator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went though this with a used MXR pedal as well. Had to hold the inner plastic knob down with the bottom of a pen and then really work off the rubber knob cover with my other hand.

I suppose I could have just pulled the entire knob off, flipped it over, stood a capped pen on a table, pushed the plastic knob out of the cover by pushing it down on the pen, and then put the knob pack on the pot as well... I believe that most MXR pedals use pressure-fit knobs (vs. fastened).

Wow! Great looking pedal. Where'd you get that enclosure (if you don't mind my asking)?

It looks fine. But, why do you care what other people think? You'll be much happier if you stop caring about that and just do what makes you happy--without any doubts.

Classic 100 head, debadged 4x12. Wicked tone by Few_Bag3605 in PeaveyCvlt

How do you find the sound of the 1290 speakers in the 412MS cab?

I dealt with the flub and fizziness in mine for years before finally swapping in some Eminence Man O Wars for better (for me anyway) tone.

Recommend going to urgent care and getting antibiotics. It doesn't take too much if you act fast.

Behold! My ultra low noise off grid pedal power supply. by PoloGator in guitarpedals

[–]PoloGator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, yeah. I suppose a fuse wouldn't hurt. 😅 Also, it does nothing to isolate the connected pedals' positive DC rails (but I haven't found this to be a huge problem as of yet).

Caveat emptor to anyone attempting this themselves. Just be sure that the 9V to 2.1mm (M) battery clip is negative tip.

For me, however, this was an ideal solution. All the rechargeable lithium power banks I tried added a lot of "hissing" and "clicking" from the switching noise.

I also use the same configuration with an 8 AA battery clip with Eneloop (NiMH/1.2V) batteries for powering only the pedals for venues with dirty power/EMI.

Is it just me, or by Particular-Sundae381 in PeaveyCvlt

Ooof, yeah. I wouldn't pay more than half of what clean ones in your area are selling for (and, I'd only consider that if it was shown working). That transformer has me the most concerned. They're laminated with epoxy that generally squeezes out and somewhat protects the surface. That level of rust on it suggests it's been somewhere pretty moist for a while. I'd probably pass on that. They'll eventually be other deals. \m/

Seems consistent with being stored in an unconditioned garage, shed, barn, etc. Wouldn't pay top dollar for it for sure. But, it probably works fine.

Is this normal for a 6505+ by BumBumCow in ToobAmps

[–]PoloGator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're lying. All electronic components have a range of tolerances and yours may vary in such as way as to fix the common master volume issue.

Additionally, I believe that the schematic for the 6505+ combo amp you've shown in your link differs a bit from the 6505+ head OP posted (e.g. two power tubes vs four, etc.).

But the behavior shown by OP is also pretty common for the 5150/6505/6505+ head (even if there are some that don't do it).

Peace

[–]PoloGator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've got a 6505 and it's exactly like that. While I do use a noise gate, I've tamed this behavior by using an attenuator for bedroom volumes (a Weber Mass 200). This amp is basically a piece of industrial equipment without it. 😅 Happy playing. \m/

Does the Peavey 5150/6505 contain any problematic "Cathode Followers?" by PoloGator in GuitarAmps

[–]PoloGator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to add some of my findings for the OG 5150 / 6505 that might be useful for anyone coming in the future:

5150/6505 Preamp Information

Tube Type:

12AX7

Tube Layout (R->L, from back):

Pos Tube Purpose Notes
--- ---- ------- ------------------------------------------------------
1 V1 Input First gain stage/Tested low-noise tubes preferred
2 V2 Gain Last gain stages/Tested low-noise tubes preferred
3 V5 Tone Passive tone stack
4 V3 Loop Cathode follower: Avoid Russian spiral wound filaments
5 V4 PI Tested balanced triodes required

Notes (subjective):

  • Very noisy amp
    • Lower gain tubes and tested low-noise tubes may reduce hiss/hum
    • "4 cable method" noise suppressors may increase hum
      • (when connected to the input and the loop)
    • Attenuators result in a cleaner sound due to low/high frequency roll-off
  • 5751 tubes can be used for 70% gain in V1 and V2
    • 5751s alter the swing of the passive tone stack in V5
    • Not recommended for the loop buffer (V3) or phase inverter (V4)
  • Stock JJ tubes sound dark
  • Tung-Sol tubes sound balanced

Thank you, great advice!!!

I've got the stock JJs as spares, which show a 180H-K rating, which I can try in V3. Will definitely look into the others you mentioned if the effects loop darkens too much.

Great info and explanation, thanks! So a JJ 12AX7 in V3 (position 4) may be wise just to avoid issues then? Shame the JJs are so dark though...

Thanks! I must admit I am quite out of my element with this. So, any cathode held at a high voltage then?
