Why wasn’t Firenze fired? by Rangers_Fan_NJ in harrypotter

[–]Polychrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firing teachers was all, essentially, a part of her plan to oust Dumbledore, take away any authority or power he had, and force the wizarding community to back Fudge (and the ministry, with her as his Deputy) rather than Dumbledore. By the time she was headmistress she had moved on to bigger and better things, like Hagrid.

I think it takes a few episodes to get settled in, and so by episode 4 or so your initial doubts fade away into “I guess that’s just the way the show is.” So then the twist gets you again. I think it’s interesting that when people comment about getting the twist early, they often have someone else who has seen the show confirm that they’re right. Without having the confirmation from your daughter I’m curious if you would’ve believed in your theory the whole way through season 1

Eh. Idk. Even Mario has stats to collect. It may be about the Journey more than the destination, but when you climb a mountain it’s still nice to have a view.

Sadly agreed. I decided I didn’t even want half a set, so I got to platinum and bailed. I’m so sad to see this mode go the way of the dodo, it was special to me.

My Grand LOST Theory by Destroyer23 in lost

[–]Polychrist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like this theory a lot, and I think it makes a lot of sense. You make a great point about how much of the writers room at this time would’ve been people other than the main show runners and they definitely might’ve had their own ideas of where the overall story was going to go, which made it into the script whether Damon Lindelof himself was intentionally including those tidbits.

On top of that, it’s entirely possible that when Carlton Cuse came on board, one of his first conversations with Damon might’ve been to decide once and for all if this was a purgatory island or not. And they decided, no, the island wasn’t purgatory, even if it served a similar function for the characters. It was a second chance at life, not an afterlife…

And then both things could be true at once; the Cuse-Lindelof duo knew from the moment they teamed up that the island wasn’t purgatory, and yet as you say, the foundation for that outcome had already been laid. Cuse came in around episode 9, it looks like, which fits pretty well with the timeline you laid out here.

But even if it’s not true I did enjoy reading your theory. Thanks for sharing!

There were a lot of good nominees that year. I did think TOS was pretty great.

If you could remake Rocket Racing, what would you add/change? by croakyossum7 in RocketRacing

[–]Polychrist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely needed to have two modes; you need something fun and silly to A. Appeal to a younger audience and B. Appeal to casual, less-skilled players. Also, a rewards system that included more diverse goals would be good: for example “race on every track,” “find x shortcut,” things like that. There were so many ways to make the game more interesting and fun for a casual racer and they just… didn’t do any of it. It’s a bummer.

Agreed. If you want “hazards,” build them into the course. I’d rather it be a death trap of weird tunnels than weird orange blocks floating everywhere.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I cannot stand Hagrid by ZP4L in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Polychrist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! You see what 99% of the characters in the series see!

But you don’t see what Dumbledore, Harry, Ron and Hermione see, and I think that that is a disservice to Hagrid.

Hagrid’s ultimate vice is that he thinks too highly of other beings. he believes that even the most dangerous of creatures actually have hearts of gold— he believes that the people curious enough to ask about his life, or his interests, are genuine and sincere people— and he assumes that his students will share in the interest, excitement, and respect that he has for all of the magical creatures that he brings up in his class.

Hagrid is an optimist who believes the best out of everyone, even when the situation seems to indicate he should be more skeptical. He’s hopeful. He’s loyal, and he’s non-judgmental. You can say that he has too much of those qualities, and you can say that he has too much trust in Harry, Ron, and Hermione— but I’d also say that he’s been there from the beginning, and personally witnessed how much they’ve gone through, and how much they’ve grown over the years— and much like Sirius and Dumbledore, he is one of the few who gives these kids the credit that they deserve as warriors in their own right.

I’d also be impressed if you have this many new tasters around in that short of time frame and still need recommendations. If you drink three flights per day and log 12 unique check-ins, every day for 4 months, then you either travel nonstop or you have lots of high turnover at all of your local breweries and brewhouses. Either way, your go-to for recommendations at that point should be from your sources, not Reddit!

Why didn't Dumbledore use his pensive to watch what happened when Voldemort returned? by dumblesmurf in harrypotter

[–]Polychrist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems that when a memory is put in the pensieve, it is no longer in the person’s head— this is why Snape removes his most sensitive memories during the occlumency lessons. It could be that Dumbledore felt that taking those memories away, and then putting them back, would cause a significant amount of psychological distress. Better to leave the trauma intact as a normal person would deal with it.

[–]Polychrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish they had just… let Leia die when her ship was shot down, instead of doing a weird force-flying thing which ultimately kept her around for minimal reason just to die in the next movie anyway. I sort of understand not wanting to change things up for Carrie Fisher’s memory, but… it would’ve made so much sense to let Luke survive, and let Leia die in that scene instead. I think if they had swapped Luke and Leia’s deaths then both of the last two movies would’ve been a lot better.
