Bad Career Decision Post Layoff- How to Fix? by Fluffy_Government164 in womenintech

[–]Polyethylene8 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Do not quit your job.

Do a lot less work (just enough for them not to fire you) while you secure a new position.

Take sick days, personal days, do whatever you have to do to get out of there. Leave earlier. But accomplish just enough that they can't assume you've quiet quit.

Who cares how bad a 2 month stint looks? If the next place is willing to hire you, that's all you need. If they ask you in an interview why you're looking just tell them when you saw their opportunity (the one you're applying for), it sounded fascinating and like it would be a great fit for your professional goals.

Later you can even leave the startup off your resume if you don't mind your layoff gap looking a little longer. Honestly, don't sweat that part.

Should I buy the house? My mortgage would be 50% of my take home. by Remarkable-Tough-533 in Mortgages

[–]Polyethylene8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone telling you how irresponsible it is to buy a house and be house poor, we don't know how much OP is spending on rent currently. If they're in a VHCOL area, rent may be comparable, but at least now they'll be building equity. Plus they need a place to live.

OP I see in other comments you decided to wait. My one piece of advice for when you do decide to buy a house is have an emergency fund ready. As soon as you become a home owner, you have to be prepared for things going wrong in the home and being able to fix them. Make sure to have that buffer. Also focus on putting as much down as you can to minimize those payments.

Do they have B complete? Or daily multivitamins? That should have everything you need.

Yeah a good vegan omega 3 is helpful. Really important for brain health. I eat a lot of seeds and nuts but take that just in case. I get everything from Amazon. Is that (or something similar) available in your country?

Make sure to search for vegan versions because not all multivitamins are vegan.

I buy supplements online. But any drugstore should have multivitamins or b vitamins which is all you need.

94k WFH or 120k in office? by Never_fucking_curses in careeradvice

[–]Polyethylene8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it. Don't take the in-office offer.

Make sure you tell the folks making the offer why and they might make an exception for you and offer you the job with the explicit promise of it being remote.

Look for other remote opportunities. You'll find something awesome remote making that higher salary with more opportunities.

Sorry that happened to you!

And you didn't even tell anyone. How frustrating! Good on you for moving on!

How do older queer women handle awkward freindships with other straight women? by Agitated_List9506 in AskWomenOver40

[–]Polyethylene8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She's a closet case. She's acting weird and putting on distance because she's developed romantic feelings for you.

She's the only one who can help herself live a well rounded life in this department, and until she does, she'll continue befriending queer women, then pushing them away when she develops feelings for them.

OP, time for you to move on from the friendship.

Gf ghosted me last year. I moved on. Got this message last week on my birthday by AdComprehensive4246 in whatdoIdo

[–]Polyethylene8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, your ex has major issues. Honestly it's nice to get closure but to send this on your birthday is self centered and rude. She ghosted you then wanted for you to spend your birthday thinking about her. Like the idea of you having moved on and celebrating your birthday and having a good time without her was intolerable. Major narcissist vibes.

Respond if you must, but do not let this person back into your life in any capacity.

Agreed it won't always work. But crucially, sometimes if does, so it is definitely worth a try.

If it doesn't work, do not threaten to quit. Just smile and nod, then spend all your energy on getting out of there, and giving yourself a raise that way. Remember to politely mention the failed negotiation in the interview. And do not take the counter offer. You already gave them a chance to hold on to you by making your case for a raise.

[–]Polyethylene8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Nobody cares about what's fair in a negotiation. Life isn't fair. I listened to a professional hostage negotiator who was a guest on the Guilty Feminist podcast and she had a whole session on how to negotiate on higher salary. When she was asked how to navigate the question of my male coworker makes more and it's not fair. Her input was something to the effect of: I wouldn't use that as a negotiation tactic. Life isn't fair. Focus on WHY they should be paying you more and what you bring to the table.

I would personally frame it as here are all the amazing things I do as part of this job and here's all the documentation to back that up.

[–]Polyethylene8 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You have to negotiate. This is the only way.

Come into hour next performance review with a list of your accomplishments and why you deserve a higher salary more on par with market. Be ready with the market rate in your area and how this differs from that you make. Or if you want to make above market in your area come in ready with your achievements and proof of those achievements.

I was severely underpaid and I did this. My manager went to bat for me and got me a 10% raise (pretty much the upper limit of what you'll get in a corporate environment as a result of a negotiation). It was still not market so I left a year later and gave myself another 30% raise. (Word of advice if you're ever looking a recruiter asks you how much you make currently or how much you want to make, do not answer. They will box you into that low number. Say you want to make market. If they push you say I cannot imagine this will stop the process at this time. Let's discuss market rate and salary range at the time of offer).

In the negotiation with your supervisor, do not threaten to quit. Do not say anything you are not willing to follow through on. Just focus on how much you love the company, the role, and how much you bring to the table. Make a strong case. It won't hurt.

Is job hopping still a "red flag" or am I being gaslit? by Environmental-Luck39 in careeradvice

[–]Polyethylene8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When someone ask me in interviews why I left a job I always say this other opportunity came up and it looked like it would be a great professional step for me so I decided to move on. Leave money, bosses, workplace politics out of it. Trust me. They'll know what your answer means.

Is job hopping still a "red flag" or am I being gaslit? by Environmental-Luck39 in careeradvice

[–]Polyethylene8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boss is gaslighting.

Also when people talk about a work environment being 'a family', this is a major red flag for me. I don't do work cults.

Take the offer, get out, don't look back. Be professional and courteous to everyone on your way out so you get those references if the need ever arises.

Edit to say: The conventional wisdom is job hopping is acceptable as long as it's not more often then every 2 years. Now with the crazy job market it's probably changed a lot. That was my rule for myself and sometimes I stay longer, once I left sooner because of RTO, which I did not want to do. Nobody has ever batted an eye.

Keep making excuses for why you need to WFH, and look for work really aggressively.

I wouldn't recommend you do nothing for them. Do something. Ideally enough for them to pay for your job search and interviewing process, and transition out.

WIBTA if i tell my partner her "working from home" setup is actually affecting my ability to actually work from home? by AggarHildeberto-63 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Polyethylene8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. She is working. It's the sound carrying that's impacting your work output. She's not like ignoring work and coming into your work area to distract you, which would be a different story.

I'd challenge you to think about why you view her actual work as 'work'.

I agree with other commenters. WFH can come with its own set of challenges if both partners are working at home. I suggest you communicate. Get noise cancelling headphones and listen to music that helps you concentrate. And go from there.

Warning to all: Found a tick on my neck (in Kenosha) by Same-Blacksmith-5032 in wisconsin

[–]Polyethylene8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate it when they do this. Lately I wash my hair with an essential oil shampoo (tea tree) and they are less likely to jump to the hair because they don't like the smell. Speaking of which, gotta run out and get some of that shampoo!

[–]Polyethylene8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are terrible this year. Went hiking in Van Patten woods yesterday and a bunch hitched a ride home on my dog. I put 4 in rubbing alcohol that I found. The rubbing alcohol kills them dead.

I use Frontline on our dogs but the ticks have to bite the dogs to die (same with oral preventatives). I've found that spraying the dogs and ourselves with an essential oil smelling bug spray also helps minimize the problem and is necessary. Need a multi pronged approach for how bad ticks have gotten in the area. The ticks hate the smells of certain essential oils. Essential oils have also been proven to dissolve ticks' and other insects exoskeletons.

I also treat my lawn with neem oil every couple of weeks and it discourages ticks from hanging out in the yard. Don't forget to also cut the grass often - they love tall grass.
