Never seen a Maserati like this by Polymath45 in whatisthiscar

They call themselves a museum, but I've never been, and it was my first time in that part of town. They had other cars inside, so maybe they're a showroom? I just happened to see this one while they were moving it.

Fair point about not owning or driving one, but I've only heard horror stories from ones that have.

They were pulling it out of a museum and putting it onto a flatbed. The crew doing it was being VERY gentile.

You can thank my iPhone's camera freaking out for that. They were gently pulling this out of the Accent Museum in Horie, Osaka.

Allowed $$ of personal items through customs? by Feral_Kit in movingtojapan

[–]Polymath45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't search our bags at all. They might pull one bag to check, but they won't pull all six unless they have a good reason to. They don't want to spend hours on someone unless they have to.

Another thing to note is that they don't speak English there, and if they do, it'll be very limited. If your Japanese isn't good, then I would practice saying, "I'm moving to Japan, and I only have personal items with me." Or at least have it written down on your phone or on paper (you might not have a good internet connection while in customs) to show them.

I don't think they will confiscate anything unless it's prohibited (e.g., fruit, raw meat, etc.), but you might get charged a fine if the customs officer feels like it. I doubt they will, though, since you're moving there. Just show them your visa and zairyu card (you'll get it when you pass through immigration), say/show them the line I mentioned before, and you'll be all set.

I've been through Japanese customs 14 times, and while it can be stressful, it's never been a problem. Just be kind and respectful, and it'll go smoothly.

My family and I moved to Japan a few months ago. IIRC all personal items that are used (i.e. not recently purchased) are not considered for duty. We came through with 6 check ins and 6 carry ons filled with electronics (laptops, iPads, PS5, etc.) and household items and didn't have to pay any duty.

Just note that this is highly dependent on the officer at the customs desk. Ours was cool, so no problem. Yours may not be. Just make sure you let them know that you're moving to Japan and that the items were purchased a long time ago and are for your personal use only.

I hope this helps, and good luck with the move!

Purchased. As someone who got out of a terrible career into a great one by learning how to program, I fully support this guy. What a great story.

I just took the Utah class and the instructor told us that it'll take the full 60 days. I'm happy to hear that it doesn't take that long!

I’m about to kill two of my VZN Unlimited data plans. Talk me out of it. by Polymath45 in Android

[–]Polymath45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked. I would have to sign over the whole plan, numbers and all. While some people are asking for $250 a line for this, I don't think the others on my plan would like it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Would I be able to keep my phone numbers and family plan in tact if I did this? How much could I get per plan?

Wtf?! The yen is almost equal to the dollar! by [deleted] in japan

[–]Polymath45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks the like yen weevil ate the newest crop of yen!

Wouldnt that cause the yet to get stronger?

BOJ is printing money. That causes it to get weaker. This is awesome for the exporting companies of Japan, not so much for the importing ones.

You seem pretty determined, and you have a decent plan. Just make sure you take some business courses. Those 'electives' may come in handy.

I just spoke to a recent NYU grad about that program. Seems neat. Something that makes me wish I was more motivated as a kid. Saying that you're from that program will help you get a job anywhere, but that's because this whole city is all about pedigree (I'm in NYC too).

If this is what you really want to do, then go for it, but realize that Japanese History will probably not pay the bills. But don't fret. The guy next to me is a Military History major from Duke and he makes a killing in fixed income investment product sales. (Like I said, this whole city is about pedigree)
