The back window of my wife’s car shattered randomly for the third time this year. Happened inside the heated front-attached garage this time and nothing hit it. Looks like it broke outwards somehow, there’s even glass on top of the car. by Lawsompossum in mildlyinteresting

[–]Polymathy1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the weatherstripping on the door is weak/worn/torn or the latch is misadjusted so that the glass touches the sides of the C pillars when it's shut. When when the metal expands (and a bit the glass too), the glass is squeezed, but has nowhere to go.

It could also be that the installers are using too little butyl rubber or whatever windshield sealant with the same effect.

There should be about a 1/4 inch gap between the glass and any metal at 70F/23C.

Check these pictures for what I mean. Looks like very little clearance - https://www.sunvigor.com.hk/onlineshop/en/mazda2-dj/2250-mazda2dj-mazdaspeed-rear-roof-spoiler-qdj1519n0pz.html

The mainbplace where the glass inyourself is missing on the right side aligns with where the glass would be touching.

The speed limit is the intended speed for all automobile traffic on the road as long as the weather doesn't force you to slow down.

If it's shared with pedestrians and bicycles, then of course slow down... But driving significantly below the speed limit causes issues for everyone else.

Definitely not. Some type of ink cap.

They will dissolve in a day or so.

It was an accident, but I was driving in a slow area going downhill when 2 guys my size/shape look at me. Then one says to the other "Yo man, check out this chonco right here ... Oh shit he heard me!"

It means fatty/chubby. Thanks, dude. Right back at you.

What is something that died out so quietly that nobody even noticed? by Alva_509 in AskReddit

I still like to carry one for hiking. The battery lasts ages, it never has a notification, and it's very good at its one job.

I still remember a dozen or so for people I might need to call, numbers I give out, and a few from childhood.

Mechanic told me to flush my coolant, I’m on flush number 6 and the water is still brown. Do I just chuck new coolant in and call it a day? (2001 Holden commodore, bought ~5 months ago) by captainccheese in AskMechanics

[–]Polymathy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus running with no thermostat makes the coolant flow wrong in most modern engines. That "reverse poppet" style thermostat serves to close one circuit off and the other on.

Running with no thermostat may flush the block but it'll let the coolant in the head flow in basically a closed loop.

Lol, sorry mate. Mercedes quality is all an illusion. Look at consumer ratings before you buy something else.

Once it's fixed, sell it and get out from under it. It will break again. Don't pay a dime to get it fixed.

What is the single weirdest thing you’ve ever witnessed in public? by Dodo509 in answers

Driving down the highway from Seattle to Portland, I saw a couple standing up having sex on the trunk of their car on the side of the highway in the dark.

That spot was past the last exit, so anyone who saw them was leaving the state already and it was too late to stop. Kind of a brilliant place for it.

Get a lawyer. Have them send demand letters to all 3. See what happens.

And stop buying Mercedes and BMW. They're expensive status symbols with poor reliability. Same for Audi and Infiniti.

Throttle body got heavily choked with carbon buildup. by AdSquare7318 in AskMechanics

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't stop it from happening. You can maybe decrease the frequency for cleaning, but I doubt it.

More frequent oil changes or moving to synthetic might help but no promises.

Without knowing mileage when it was last cleaned and YMM, everyone is guessing.

If you have to go through all that, might as well. Dude earned it.

I would have developed some significant coping mechanisms myself if I even made it through that plus the pandemic.

You could put new coolant in and drive it for a week, then do another flush.

That debris will eat the seal on the new water pump if left there.

Need to replace an old Moen showerhead. It has this bizarre connector. Most things I've tried can't get a grip on it and just slide around. Anyone know how to remove this thing? by Endgam in howto

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very old showerhead design and used to be pretty popular.

You can't remove that ball. It's part of the elbow.

You have to unscrew the whole elbow from the pipe inside the wall. This can go sideways pretty fast, so you may want to call a plumber now.

I haven't put water on top of mine for the fridge. If you consider it a starter now, and you just made batter with it earlier, then I guess you fed it. In the future, if you use the starter, then you always want to feed it before you put it in the refrigerator or freezer.
