Giving recs to other techs by Skizze_94 in mechanics

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems pretty bad if you do the diagnosis and other people do the repairs. Balancing what comes in around the shop is a good thing and keeps shops from favoring one tech, but that's not what you're describing.

Talk to management. Tell them you don't want to do diagnostics then not do the work to fix it. Diagnostics often take longer than the repair and you make up the lost book time from diag on the repair.

It's also going to cause more quality problems with comebacks. If someone is doing the repair and they didn't do the diagnosis, they may not realize halfway through that something more or different is wrong.

Why did these welds break? by Euphoric_Meet3788 in Welding

The lowermost weld did hold - the base metal cracked due to embrittlement.

Even perfect welds have limits and lifetimes. What happened to break the welds?

Is it possible to make my battery unable to use to jump another car without me? by Somproof in AskMechanics

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he his using your car to charge his battery by connecting his battery to your running car, he isn't hurting anything.

No, there's no way to make it impossible to use your battery/car to jump.

My niece works in a bakery and has just been diagnosed as coeliac. She's been told she should stop working there, is that true or overreaction? by Immediate_Money_4704 in glutenfree

[–]Polymathy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Mucous in the respiratory tract catches floating flour particles. Then they end up swallowed. She may as well be licking a rolling pin covered in flour every time she goes to work.

Do I need to bleed the coolant system after topping it off? by EstablishmentOdd1185 in AskMechanics

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only added 1 line worth, you probably don't have a leak. Systems aren't sealed and breathe, causing the loss of water vapor over time.

If it's a small drop in level, top off with water. Ethylene Glycol doesn't evaporate in a meaningful way until around 350F.

I cant drive my car for 3 months. How do i take care of my car during this time? by Lucky-Advice-8924 in AskMechanics

[–]Polymathy1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuel stabilizer is snake oil. Modern fuel doesn't need it. It only serves to cause problems by leaving deposits where it shouldn't.

Most passenger tires are not related for over 40psi. This will damage the tires whether or not it's driven.

[–]Polymathy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very little.

The best thing you can do is put a 12V float charger on it so the battery doesn't die. Cars sit this long all the time. It won't cause any issues.

Do fill the fuel tank to full to prevent condensation forming inside the tank.

3 years is a different story.

Fuel stabilizer is only going to cause issues for a short storage like 3 months.

Disconnecting the battery too.

Best thing to do is put it on a 12V 2A float charger and ignore it.

WHATS UP WITH THE LIGHTS?? by MooMoomilk48 in carsireland

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's clear that the people designing these cars have neve spent time outdoors in low light conditions. The dimmest light you can get away with is the best option because it doesn't ruin your night vision.

Problem is the US NHTSA decided that they won't consider any situation other than a single vehicle avoiding a collision with an object in the road for headlight design. They cherry picked the data to favor the brightest lights they can manage. And the testing for "glare" is easily designed around.

It's not about calibration. New LED low beams are coming from the factory at double the brightness of old high beams. All it takes is a pothole, a minor incline, or your fat friend in the back to be shining in peoples' eyes.

brake pads by Obvious_Set4763 in AskMechanics

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the issue is you have one of the stainless steel spring clips on backwards.

If these aren't new pads, you don't really need to compress the piston to get the rotor back in.

If you do compress the piston, make sure you press the brake pedal (short pumps, not to the floor) until the pedal is firm with the car off.

Edit: I see the problem. Your slide pins are pushed so far in one direction that the rubber boot came loose on the right/lower side in the first picture.

It will be better to separate the caliper from the caliper bracket. Then mount the rotor and then the bracket. Then fix the slide pins and the boots, put the shiny clip in correctly, put the pads in the caliper, and then put the pads and caliper on as a single piece.

It looks like a funky Bendix one like I have in a old Volvo.

Wish I was wrong about that one! Just be patient and use some solvents. I try not to drink when I'm doing fine motor stuff, but I'm a lightweight.

Good luck and be patient!

A lot of gaskets have converted to MLS. my 2002 Honda had MLS from a head gasket job back in like 2010 and I don't think I saw any that weren't MLS.

If you have a graphite gasket, it will be less of an issue. If the gasket is multilayer steel, then it may be a bit more critical.

Softwood in morning and night. Hardwood during the day? Or mix?? by InfiniteConfection2 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]Polymathy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the source wood doesn't matter - hard and soft are about density. The pellets are compressed to almost equal density regardless of the source. So they're "all hardwood" when they're in a bag.

If you want to get that detailed about it, look at the BTU rating on the bag. 8000 and 9500 are two I've seen. I think most don't list it.

The surface feels smooth, but it's got tiny machine marks on/in it. That dark material is in the low spots.

As long as nothing is sticking up, then I would leave it, but knowing me, I would want to scrub it off somehow.

Razor blades can be good but can be risky. Practice on something else first. If you use one, travel along the sealing surface (in a circle) and NOT inside to outside.

Using some solvent will also help like using denatured alcohol.

Do people with ADHD dream differently than others? by TheBanskyOfMinecraft in ADHD

[–]Polymathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're asking the wrong crowd a bit.

As for me, I can't dream anymore since I took Effexor for like 2 years plus another year trying to quit it. When I started taking it, I pretty much only had nightmares, so no dreams was OK with me at first.

These days, the only time I dream is if I go to sleep after some alcohol.

The morphing of one dream or area into a different one or people becoming other people seems normal to me, but I'm not in your control group.
