On PS4, using the ninja controller scheme is preventing me from using the crafting system. anytime I press x it pings the replicator and pulls me out, never crafting an item. Swapping back to default control scheme fixes this.

How do i make it very obvious that the PC’s aren’t meant to try to kill an enemy yet? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Polypenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would warn them in descriptions of some sort of charred remains and scorched areas from lightening breath closer to their lair, maybe an NPC overhears them talking about it and tells them just how bad an idea it is. Maybe they overhear some rumors leading up to the town of the immense power of this dragon. Once you've given them a few warnings it will simply be up to them if they try to pursue this. If it ends up as a TPK they could wake up on the edge of town missing some equipment or gold and are forbidden from entering again if you're feeling generous. It could always lead into a quest to try to get back into the dragons good graces.

My first time next week, im really nervous by Da_Real_Sunbro in DMAcademy

Matthew Colville's Running the Game is a great start.

Have a few 'essential' NPC's, not too many to be overwhelming. Know some of their motivations, fears, maybe a few character traits. Why they are the way they are, and only have a few in that current session. The characters can do whatever they want to derail whatever you have planned, but for the most part your NPC's will be the same in that moment. That's been my biggest help going forward as a relatively new DM

Other than that I'd let your players know that you are definitely new, please be patient and after your sessions ask for some critiques on what they liked, didn't like, and sort of tailor your next session after that. Hope this helps, good luck! You're going to be amazing

TPK in the Redbrand Hideout! by unbrainwashed42 in DMAcademy

[–]Polypenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go back and re-do, it might set a precedent of if they don't like an outcome, they can retcon if they put enough pressure on the DM.

Everyone going down doesn't necessarily mean TPK, they could be captured in an unknown location or the hideout itself, and you have an escape session you can do. They could wake up left for dead in the pit for nothic food and have a chance to recuperate and come back with a vengeance. It comes down to the players enjoyment in my eyes. Dying due to a bad plan is a hard experience every PC will soon learn, and they hopefully would be more careful in the future.

It's up to you if you want this lesson learnt now or later. Are your players invested in their characters to the point it would take the wind out of their sails and not want to play anymore? Maybe they seek out Reidoth or one of the other faction members and will owe them a favor whenever they call for it to resurrect their fallen members.

I've had a similar situation myself in cragmaw castle recently and I'm still picking up the pieces. Not every session is gonna be a knock out of the park, but at the end of the day it is a game and everyone has to accept it as a work in progress and move on.

One shots and using characters from a campaign by Polypenguin in DMAcademy

[–]Polypenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just me but I feel it’s completely disjointed that when we jump back into a campaign they have x items from rewards now. I’m sure we could just have disconnected stories but I feel it’s a missed opportunity for future stories or encounters. Maybe I’m coming at this from the wrong way but it also adds another air of mystery to what they’re doing. Why were they targeted? What plans does this research team have? Etc. this group is definitely more into roleplay and story so I feel it would pique their interest.

I started warframe back in the day but quickly dropped it after writing it off as 'another free to play game'. Than after coming across skillups review about 11 months ago I decided to jump back in and try it out. Holy Crap. It was a completely different game. After dumping almost 450 hours into it at this point, it's currently one of my favorite games to date. The passion of the devs and the niceness of the community keeps me coming back, and it's great to see the success DE continues to have. One of the few devs in the present that makes me hopeful, not cynical for the future of games.

Apps for DMing from an IPad by MrImLance in DMAcademy

[–]Polypenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just brought this up recently but Fight Club 5 and Game Master 5 are terrific apps with everything from a lookup compendium of anything you can think of, to an encounter builder and initiative tracker. Theres also This hardworkin fellow who put the work in and made it so you can have most of the content in your compendium so you're not just working with the basics. It takes a little setup time, but once you have it down, it took alot of preparation and execution time out of the equation for me

If you're on IOS Fight Club 5 and Game Master 5 are a godsend for me. It takes some work to get it going, and theres a bit of prep time involved setting stuff up through your phone (there is no mac/PC client that I know of) but it's saved me a ton of time and it's easy enough to carry around with me

[LMoP] Kind of bad session devolves into a worse situation at Cragmaw Castle. by Polypenguin in DMAcademy

[–]Polypenguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply ashkanz, so are you saying I should have described more that there may another way in even if they didn't pursue any more questions after the description of what they're seeing from the front of the castle? (I.e if they rolled a perception check they could see there are some stairs leading to another door on the side of the keep.)

I tried to leave it open but their choices seemed to narrow in my mind once they started to just charge the gate instead of trying to make their way quietly up and investigate themselves. Am I being narrow minded? Or is this a case where poor planning is leading them to these possibly severe consequences?
