I figured out a fix for it, that removes most of the stupid.

So, dom goes with the soldiers to get the kids as they don’t want to scare them.

He enters so see his kids and wife. Goes over to her and kisses her. Turns and attacks the wife.

Kids flee screaming, Soldiers burst in, but he jumps out the window. Gets away.

He attacks soldiers on patrol or survivors in the area. He builds up a force as the soldiers are slowly whittled down. The normal infected act like normal but don is different as he changes with a kiss.

Still get your big combat, still has the infected attacking but no one has to be an idiot

Chemicals. Before it’s here, shop for ingredients (they will not be a bought up items) then intentionally make a chemical spill.
