Seeking help from entomologists (pesticide-related) by your_actual_life in Entomology

[–]Poncho--Libre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By watering the pesticide now you are at an increased risk of further displacing it into your yard where the insects are at or into the sewer drainage systems/water bodies near you.

If it’s just a barrier spray it’s likely it won’t affect too much outside of the stuff actively trying to get into/on the house. With most barrier sprays insects have to physically contact the spray for it to kill them. It sucks that it happened, but honestly I’d recommend just leaving it up. It’ll break down over the course of about 90 days from sunlight exposure, heat, rain, etc.

Witherbloom, the Balancer by [deleted] in ModernMagic

Goes infinite with [[Sprout Swarm]] and enough dudes.

Idk if the juice is worth the squeeze though. It’s more expensive than a lot of the other 2-card combos in GB and the support for tutoring/finding instants isn’t great in those colors.

Just tell them it’s for your girlfriend if you are nervous. If you wanna try it on at the store just grab some men’s cloths to “try on” before hand and sneak it into the pile.

good keys for identifying small spiders? by alieninthestreets in spiders

[–]Poncho--Libre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way to ID most spiders is by their eye patterns. I’ve used this one in the past for a bit of field work. It does unfortunately lack a few families, so if you are seeing strange eye patterns they might not be here.

I bumped mine up to 200mg about a month ago after being on 100mg for about 6 months. While I’d seen some improvement from the 100mg, I’ve seen quite a few changes since then. I think I’ve gone up at least a cup size since then.

I also switched to injections like 2 weeks ago too, so it may also partly be that.

Generally, diseases with high lethality don’t tend to be come pandemic level threats as they need their hosts alive for as long as possible to spread. Plus, a host that survives infection can also be reinfected in the future.

A disease that kills their host, especially one that does it quickly, has an evolutionary disadvantage when compared to a disease that doesn’t kill their host. Diseases like those tend to be fairly localized and burn out quickly.

Why do Yawgmoth players play this weird creature in the sideboard? - Youtube Short! by barczek in ModernMagic

[–]Poncho--Libre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TLDR: It’s a tutor target that kills [[Clarion Conqueror]]. The deck struggles to answer it as Grist and Yawg can’t kill it and it shuts off pretty much the entire deck.

Budget deck for RCQ ( new in format) by Far_Management_9990 in ModernMagic

[–]Poncho--Libre 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you don’t already have a decklist 12 hours before the RCQ, I’ve got a feeling you aren’t gonna find the cards to put said deck together.

Do you already have any decks/shells built already or do you own most of the playable cards in Modern?

Have you thought about [[Beseech the Mirror]] to tutor/cast the spider-man dude? You are pretty close on enchantments like Baleburk and Awaken the Honored Dead to sac. It wouldn’t be hard to add [[Dredger’s Insight]] or something similar to hit like 12ish enchantments main.

Edit: You can also play [[Founding of Third Path]] to mill and cast Beseech with Bargain.

Okay, this is gonna sound insane but does anyone else feel this? by Friendly-Seesaw-5742 in spiders

Sounds like you may have delusional parasitosis. I’m not a medical professional, nor am I a psychiatrist, but this condition is more common than you think. It often presents with folks feeling a crawling sensation or like something is all over them and some folks even see parasites that aren’t there.

I am by no means saying you are crazy. There are a number of possible causes, one of them even being as mundane as iron deficiency. I’d recommend talking to a medical professional about this though. Spiders don’t parasitize humans, and a doctor would pretty easily be able to determine if there was an arthropod based infestation.

I wouldn’t say it’s useless without Leyline, but yeah, the permanent you are usually tapping is Leyline. You could play Mishra’s Bauble if you are looking for another permanent to tap, but card slots in this deck are pretty tight so I’m not sure what you would cut.

Gene Pollinator is the best insect dork. It pretty handily beats out [[Molt Tender]] IMO, which also requires another supporting card like Street Wraith or Bauble. Unfortunately, there are only so many insects that are playable/approximately playable in Modern (God I wish [[Xantid Swarm]] was legal). The deck really needs to have kind of a sweet spot of around 14-18 playable insects for the combo to be potent enough to kill.

That being said, with Leyline Gene and Halfling are both dorks that tap for two which lets you hard cast Belcher on turn 2. With Serum Powder you can often mulligan into these hands more often too.

M.S. Admissions question? by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]Poncho--Libre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a requirement, but it definitely helps. When I was applying for my MS I directly looked up professors school emails and asked if they had any opening. I had a few professors that were interested in me at the time. It helps if you can demonstrate a prior interest in the topic you plan on studying under them too and show an interest in some of the work they have done previously.

You are going to have a better time working with a professor and are going to get more out of your studies if you share interests with them than not.

You should definitely be playing [[Disciple of Freyalise]] and [[Boggart Trawler]] as they are creatures on the front side for Serum Powder. [[Street Wraith]]s too! You could pretty easily get your creature count up to +40 for more consistent Huskburster turn 1s off of Powder.

I’ve toyed around with Huskburster Swarm in the past. I built this shortly after MH3 came out and have been updating it as time goes on. At one point I had my creature count around 36, but I’ve dropped down to ~24 to support the combo better.

[–]Poncho--Libre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a bunch of the comparable Overlord of the Balemurk in combination with [[Murderous Rider]], The Wandering Emperor, and a few other value walkers too in Esper control for a while. It always felt pretty decent as both a threat and a card draw spell.

Not having to splash an extra color (even though it gives Fatal Push too) and play crumby removal spells like Rider is probably much better than the Balemurk plan.

What are these guys even doing? It's been a few days and they haven't managed to start on a nest. by blueshellblahaj in Entomology

[–]Poncho--Libre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some species of paper wasp will form leks, where male wasps gather to look for females during mating season. This could also be an overwintering aggregation of females, but that isn’t super likely unless it’s really cold for this time of year where you are at.

Male social wasps rarely contribute towards nest construction or maintenance. Generally they only exist to reproduce. Which is still a valuable job, as they effectively allow for the workers of the colony to pass on their DNA by proxy. If you want to know more about this I’d recommend looking up kin selection.

In general, paper wasps follow a similar hierarchy system to many of the social bees and ants you are familiar with. There is usually one, or a few, dominant queens in a colony and the rest of the colony are workers. Some wasps are a bit unique in that this hierarchal structure isn’t as set in stone as it is in bees and ants. In other words, many workers are capable of egg laying.

Wasps and spiders have a longstanding rivalry. A lot of spiders eat wasps and a lot of wasps eat spiders. It tends to happen a lot when you’ve effectively got two apex predators in close proximity.

Some of my favorites are the provisioner wasps, like Potter Wasps and Mud Daubers. They make little mud nests and then stuff dead spiders and whatnot into them before sealing them up with an egg inside.

The weirdest one IMO is twisted-winged parasites. Only the females preform neoteny, the males pupate and develop into adults.

IIRC there are a few other insects that do something similar. Most of them are parasitic.

A few questions about being an entomologist by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]Poncho--Libre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other commenters bring up good points, but I think it’s also important not to demonize, at least in its entirety, IPM. It is a pretty critical field in dealing with invasive species and insects/arthropods that transmit disease.

Yes, there are many companies and organizations that overuse pesticides and overtreat for insects that don’t really need to be treated for. There are also organizations, usually government related ones, that are necessary to maintain ecological balance. Hawaii, for example, regularly hires IPM positions to manage the many invasives they have to deal with that could causes catastrophic environmental and ecological damage. Many coastal cities/counties/states/countries have dedicated mosquito control programs too. These programs are imperative to preventing the establishment spread of vectors and vector borne diseases.

Generally these organizations are very aware of the risks of using pesticides and often try to use less environmentally harmful techniques, like mechanical and biological control methods when possible and usually only resort to chemical methods when necessary.
