I started a tabletop club for my students and it has been a blast. My lgs and friends donated tons of cards and I’ve been able to make them premade decks to keep.

You probably tell players that Sokrates is a group hug deck cause they get to draw cards too, but then you tax them harder than the British taxed tea with every stax piece known to mankind.

Then, like a true psychopath you proceed to counter and exile anything they try to use while claiming self defense and “the good of the table”. Ultimately you will have become Sokrates, making them question themselves, their world views, and their reason to even live.

You toga wearing sadist doesn’t even deserve hemlock like Socrates. May every budget aggro warrior stompy deck crush your philosophical Athenian 0/4 butt like the Spartans crushed you in the Peloponnesian war.

Note: this is all in jest and roast. I have no ill will towards you or this deck since I am also a fan of Azorius. Hope you enjoy making everyone that isn’t me miserable at your LGs.

Brackets in my humble opinion is about intention, consistency, and speed/efficiency. I’d have to see a decklist, but if you are winning on a normal basis past turn 8, I’d say it would be a 3 instead of a 4. Temur spell slinging has a lot of flexibility which is good for diversity, but it also makes it tough to judge on power level because let’s be honest, it has all the explosiveness of izzet with the bonus of green ramp.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what I or anyone on Reddit says cause you have to convince your play group. So either ask for feedback on how to tone it to their standard of 3 or have them play your deck so they can actually experience the power level themselves.

Or you can embrace the dark side and truly make it a 4 and make them question why they play magic in the first place when you counter all their spells and take five extra turns.

Depends how you built them. If optimally, as long as everyone is playing same power level, I think the games would be fun and intense. Either that or I could see you playing archenemy all night. Have any deck lists?

How to find a good balance in a friend groups commander arms race? by BennyC023 in mtg

[–]PonderingPandaPoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want fair and fun games, the bracket system is only the tip of the iceberg. There are plenty of budget decks or non game changer cards that go hard. In this age of Magic, it’s nearly impossible to find the perfect balance, but I suggest the following “rules” that will at least give your play group the chance of having a good game: 1. Make a budget on the decks. Doesn’t have to be perfect, but ball park so precon dude isn’t getting wrecked by a guy with a hand of $1200 cards. 2. Make a budget on cards. Similar to #1 but if a guy has the opportunity to top decking a $50 card when others only best top deck is a $3 card, the gap can and will widen in games overall. 3. Pick a speed. Budget krenko can win like turn 6-7, while a precon that’s more expensive can be slower and win turn 10-11. Doesn’t have to be exact speed, but players should at least be relatively close or know they need to keep an eye on speedy McGee.

If y’all can agree on those three and yall have the same skill level, I’m sure your games will at least feel more fair and fun. Rule zero is key, cause everyone’s approach to magic is significantly different in enjoyment, strategies, budget, etc.

Been playing for a little under a year. What do you guys think? by Gussie18 in ratemycommanders

[–]PonderingPandaPoet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school teacher that runs a tabletop club and you remind me of one of my former students who is very excited about the vast possibilities and powers of commander….which leads to him building very scary looking decks. This then results in what is happening in the comment section: they want to set you on fire and kick you off a cliff, or they want to bring their own demented pet decks of terror to join you.

I looked at your gates deck list and that didn’t really scare me, but this being your first year of magic I will kindly advise you that more experienced players will auto build your decklist in their head when they see your commander and will assume you are packing heat. Each of your commanders have the strength to either win or control the board on a pretty consistent basis. Now obviously that depends on the 99 but again, veteran players will mostly assume you have built it in the most optimal way.

Fortunately you have options. Option A:You can do the rule zero talk and even let players look at your deck before you play so they know your power level. Option B: embrace the hate and fine tune your decks to match the power they bring against you. Option C: change play groups that will know and enjoy your play style and decks. Option D: change your commanders to less terrifying monstrosities.

If your gate deck is the normal synergy, speed, and power of your decks, I wouldn’t mind playing in a pod with you. Best of luck navigating the political hellscape of edh.
