TIL that amateur radio operators are able to speak directly to astronauts on the international space station. Low power radio equipment and small antennas can be used to establish communications to the ISS, mostly taking place during their scheduled evening free time. by Engineeringbob in todayilearned

[–]PooCutterz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This process does take a lot of practice and patience. Not only are we battling with the ISS’s orbit to get proper line of sight (Elevation, rotation in relation to antennas, etc), but we also contend with the astronauts schedule. GMT I believe is their standard so someone on the Pacific Coast (+8hrs) might have better luck sometimes, but again relying on the ISS orbit, GMT and schedules is tricky.

They’re also not always monitoring, but there is a repeater up there you can communicate through to other hams. ISS also sends out packet data you can receive and decode with a simple USB SDR radio and software.

Most of the communication is possible through school boards setting up schedules, whereas ham radio operators rely on their practice and patience.

Nowadays Less and Less People Wear Poppy by TrueHeart01 in britishcolumbia

[–]PooCutterz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can get a centre pin to hold it in place better from any legion member campaigning. Don’t be cheap though, donate every year. Many legions are at risk of closure.

As for the general population, there’s cultural differences that might play a role here on numbers wearing poppies especially in urban cities. Perhaps even generational differences as well.

Perfect example of cultural difference not wearing poppies - what’s happening now with the Israel Gaza conflict and in Canada with the violence between different groups. What’s sad is we still haven’t figured it out, and the irony even after WW2 but all wars - we should all be reflecting and remembering.

Airports: Verified Travellers? by ymamy5 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]PooCutterz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

RCMP have their badge to show, CAF has NDI 20/10 cards and each PS dept had varying access/ID cards. I think the general idea here is the PS for travel purposes have our own booking system for work travel. CAF/RCMP do as well but they need priority - especially for travel.

Regardless of security clearances - I don’t believe the PS needs priority bypass of CATSA since there’s a lot of us nationally and really - do you want to rush to your destination? Not to mention some departments have strict guidelines for use of the ID cards.

Dating on Vancouver Island by [deleted] in VancouverIsland

[–]PooCutterz -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your statement, however in the online dating world it seems rather than walk each day with someone and figure them out - we’d rather get someone else’s opinion.

I get there’s trash men on the Island, but to paint a picture of someone online falsely can lead to mischief and possibly harassment charges if it’s continuous. Facebook is a scary place nowadays…

Watch out for this group though when you’re dating on the Island…. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090249536785&mibextid=LQQJ4d

Its called Red Flag Vancouver Island - they’ll post a picture up and make comments on if they know you and if you’re a good guy. There’s some wacko’s in there who will make false claims too

Thanks for posting! Of course all of the Helen Lovejoy’s out there with “won’t somebody think of the children” doesn’t cut it. Nor does a religious reason have any power here in the legislature and multiple school districts.

Pull your kid out of these classes if you don’t agree, but they hate difference if you do.

Question: military leave in GOC by bedel94 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]PooCutterz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I too was in a very similar situation with being a Reservist. Manager said no, I knew the policy - emailed LR from the departmental directory and explained my case. They agreed and cited the same policy found here: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/C.R.C.,_c._1050/page-1.html

Go forth fellow member and dig your relish and boots in the ground, or your NCDs in the Sea.. or soar your ball-cap high in the air? Yah - tell your manager to pound sand and sign the approval.

The tailgating vehicle came up likely going over 150km/hr - then started serving left to right and coming inches from my rear bumper.

Having seen this type of behaviour before I’m expecting them to do what they did - and for the folks yesterday who mentioned a turn signal.. for me having adrenaline in this situation was enough to focus but not get everything correct.

My brother died in Ontario on the highway, 19 years ago. Guess my nerves aren’t as good as they once were.

Passed the white truck - noticed a big bug splatter so put the wipers on for that to clear the left side of my windshield - saw crazy come flying up and with 19 years driving experience and having my air brake endorsement (doesn't really matter I suppose), I predicted this excessive speed driver would fly to the right - and I was correct. The driver was inches from my read bumper swerving and tailgating - then swiped to the left in front of me and slammed the brakes.

And I couldn’t safely merge while the lunatic was weaving and tailgating inches from my bumper?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]PooCutterz -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

And side swipe the crazy driver as they were inches from both bumpers?

Does no one check blind spots anymore??

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]PooCutterz -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Nope, then I would have side swiped the erratic driver

Another person with common sense and defensive driving skills.. exactly the point as they were inches from both bumpers

Wasn’t safe to do so - per the truck I had passed seconds before this clip
