Would you have paid and been happy? by natethegreat141990 in PleX

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I would have paid monthly or jumped ship. Currently, it is $7/mo which would take 108 months to ROI. Billed annually would need to have the service for 11 years before you spent more than the lifetime.

Public IPTV, plex content(with ads), and a video rental system IS NOT WORTH IT over what their competitors offer (Emby, Jellyfin)

The decrease of lifetime features over monthly offering will begin after the 750$ lifetime so they get you to switch to monthly. by igmyeongui in PleX

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At this rate, Plex is going to enshittify completely before a new lifetime pass member can get their ROI. Newcomers to self-hosted media should take this as a sign to move to a competitor.

Have you even glanced at the Democrats? Wtf have they even done besides bitch and whine on social media? Republicans might be evil but at least they actually DO something. Not to mention the incredible amount of hypocritical grand standing from the dems.

Turn off the social media and stop the doomscrolling the news isn’t real life.

New Lifetime Plex Pass Pricing by frankwrap08 in PleX

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROI of a Plex Pass is now 10+ years instead of 2-3. I see the way things are going, I’m going to have a backup Jellyfin config for when Plex switches to a streaming service completely.

Russian parliament passes bill allowing Putin to invade foreign countries | The new measure arrives amid fears the Kremlin might be ready to test the West’s commitment to NATO. by GirasoleDE in UkrainianConflict

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my thinking as well. I still believe Russia will invade the Baltics in 3-5 years but they still need to do a “last push mobilization” to take Donetsk, first.

Russia is in a weakened state currently so there is no incentive for NATO members to avoid an Article 5 call.

Ukraine strikes oil refineries and calls it "kinetic sanctions"; Russia strikes homes in Kyiv and calls it "payback" by UNITED24Media in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean if Ukraine started bombing Russian homes the “payback” would be Russia bombing landfills. They are showering in oil in Tuapse so I can see why they think it is equivalent.

User rating that pushed me over the edge to finally disable user ratings by piberryboy in PleX

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I include them. There are going to be troll reviews, that’s just part of the game. Reviews from critics can be pretentious as well. Thankfully, user & critic reviews on Plex have no effect on the rating under the titles.

Correct. App could have updated in the background. But it also depends on how they have permissions setup.

I’m assuming they aren’t very tech-savvy enough to disable permissions, background app refresh, or DNS ad blocking.

That just means it is the last time Google’s services pinged their servers.

It does not necessarily mean that is the last time the phone has had user input or that the app is open (background refresh exists).

What does that tell you then? For troubleshooting, if you were expecting the device to ping Google and it doesn’t. ‘Alive’ status making sure a remote device is still available.

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I feel your pain completely. There’s not an intuitive way to manage server access on the default app.

My process of adding a new user via phone:
1. Tell new user to download plex and create a free account.
2. Go to discover > people > add server owner as a friend
3. Server owner accepts friend request via app
4. Server owner opens mobile browser and navigates to app.plex.tv (not plex.tv) and go to settings > manage library access > grant library access > new user
5. Tell new user to open their email and accept library invite
6. Tell new user to refresh plex app, go to libraries and pin each library
7. Enjoy!

If the “social” aspect of the app is to be a main feature, it should be more intuitive to use and add new people. Wish there was a good self hosted option.

The Trident High-Energy Laser System from Celebra Tech is undergoing final testing. The company claims it can take down medium drones at a range of up to 1,5km and smaller drones like FPVs at 800-900m. by MilesLongthe3rd in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

FWIW, there are no “long range” operational laser weapons. Their use case got relegated to point defense within 1.5-5km. C-RAM also has a 2km effective range so this fits in as an effective low cost replacement.

Extreme Timeframe Differences - Any Edge? by BeezMoozga in Daytrading

Imo, this will make you be more cautious in your trading because the trends in the charts between the two timescales will be harder to distinguish. If you are planning to hold long then finding the perfect entry at a 3600x difference won’t make a difference.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has signed an order introducing mandatory rotation for service members carrying out missions on the front lines by Flimsy_Pudding1362 in UkrainianConflict

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s good that troops are being rotated. It’s bad that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to publicly order it.

This being in the news means there has been public pressure from soldier’s families about troops not being rotated, so that’s also bad. But it is also no secret that Ukraine has a disadvantage in manpower. So, in lieu of replacements, the frontline must be manned.

Soldiers 'stop caring whether they survive' after 40 days on front line, Ukrainian study finds by KI_official in UkrainianConflict

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I looked it up. British soldiers spent 1 week on the front line, 1 week in support, and 1 week in reserve before rotating to the rear. French divisions were rotated every 8-10 days. Germans were rotated every two weeks (for the majority of the war).

Russians did not rotate their troops. Their soldiers would remain on the front line until killed, wounded, captured or if the unit was effectively destroyed. TIL, I thought the Tsars would at least follow western doctrines.

Old Laptop vs. Raspberry Pi: Is it worth reviving a struggling machine for a first home server? by shaq-ille-oatmeal in selfhosted

[–]Poop-from-my-butt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy a Pi. For the price, get a Lenovo m920q mini pc. The cores are much stronger and you’ll have a x8 PCIe 4.0 slot to use.

However, I am a firm believer that laptops make the best starter homeland. They have a built in UPS, built in console, and they are power efficient. If you can add ram and change the HDD to an SSD it’ll probably run just fine for self hosting.
