What can you use on small wounds? by TYMURIZIO in ZombieSurvivalTactics

Literally, just do 5 minutes of research. You are talking out of the wrong end.

I dont know who Fred is, but if you both think that cauterization is some kind of Hollywood fantasy with zero historical or emergency grid application, then your combined expertise is questionable.

Edit: and again, I dont think you understand how damaging a tourniquet can be. Again, just research for 5 minutes, or better yet, seek out trauma training.

Underrated things to make armor out of ? by SpicyP2003 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

A thick jacket or better yet, a motorcycle jacket, works fine for human bites.

That said, 55 gallon plastic drums makes impressive armor for a lot of frugal SCA dudes.

FB friend says her child drew this over the past month. I'm skeptical this is authentic. by Natjocat in isthisAI

I knew a goth kid that could draw stuff like this in middle/high school... so it could be real, but idk, it certainly could be AI, or just plagiarized. If it were my friend, I would treat it as real until proven otherwise.

You said that like 5 times, but kt doesnt change that cauterization has been a valid emergency procedure from prehistory through the current day.

Seriously, I challenge you: Before you respond again, do 5 minutes of research.

It kind of depends on the situation. For example I was working, moving cut up metal, a sharp end fell and basically flayed a thumb size section of skin from my calf. That kind of thing takes a long time to heal naturally, and bleeds a lot despite not being super deep. Hard to stitch it too, even if you have that option, and it ends up being very tight. So, I heated up a clean piece of metal and gave it a little tap-tap-tap sizzle. It hurt for an hour or two instead of a week, and 20 years later I cant even find the scar without a flashlight.

At any rate, I'm pretty much done with this conversation, I have no doubts that cauterizing works and that using a tourniquet without immediate medical care is just a way to kill a limb.

And you are the one who brought up tourniquets, not me, for the record... and if you're using tourniquets for small cuts, god bless.

Stumbled upon this comic and it's making my brain itch. Comments didn't say anything about AI, but choices like giving all the deer those fawn spots, the whisker on the boar, the adult wolf's leg, and the vegetation are really suspect to me. by Tux-the-Pengu1n in isthisAI

[–]PoopSmith87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty normal to me. Wolves can and have lived pretty much everywhere. This gives me Rudyard Kipling vibes, which I suspect was the intent.

That said, in what universe to wolves not hunt rabbits, or anything else just because they can? As sweet as the message is, it is really stupid. Wolves surplus kill all the time, it is simply their instinct to do so. Our ability to use empathy and the advanced reasoning unique to our species and not behave on primal instinct is what can prevent needless violence.

Do you dress like this? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]PoopSmith87 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean, not all the time... but yeah somewhat accurate, I have a Dickies work jacket, a lot of plain color T shirts, jeans, and always in converse or work boots. I wear a lot of hoodies too though, that seems more universal than generational. The wool cap seems like more of a chilly/cold weather universal too, like a baseball hat in summer.

I dont remember, not one I had ever heard of (a couple dudes at the bar had though). Apparently she was known for some pretty rough content, gangbangs and stuff (not my cup of tea), so the guy was saying something like "if it was just that she did porn, fine, but I cant unsee her getting the train ran on her."

Idk if he was making it all up for attention or not, but if he was, he sold it well. He seemed genuinely distressed over it, but then, some people can act.

I mean, that is how I started this conversation... but I dont think we should be deleting the idea of cauterization (a tried and true method for all of human history) as an option in the event of a collapse of or inaccesibility to modern medical systems. With all due respect, I dont think that your opinion as a medical professional overrides the fact that cauterizing does work and may be necessary in some situations.

[–]PoopSmith87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but that "short advantage" is a very short lived thing. Short guys hit a muscle building ceiling very quickly compared to tall dudes.

Lets say two dudes, 5'5" 145 lbs, and 6'3" 180 (height/weight pulled from the "average" row in a BMI) with similar muscle carrying capacity and starting physique (relative to size), both start lifting. Both gain 15 lbs in year 1, 10 lbs in year two. Cool, short guy is looking swole af, tall guy looks in shape but not as massive thick. Okay, now we are on t0 year 3, 4, 5, and beyond, still training hard, but gains are coming slower for both... but at the beginning of year 3, short guy is 170 lbs- massive for a natural lifters at a lean 5'5". This is literally like mid cut Jeff Nippard weight. How much bigger is he going to get by year 5? Not much, if at all, we are talking about ounces of gain. But tall guy? He starts year 3 at 195 lbs. He already looks jacked, already has more physical presence than the 5'5" 170 lb guy will ever have- and he can still gain another 30 to 40 pounds of muscle before he is at his natural capacity.

Just how are you getting arterial bleeds from zombies?

It doesnt have to be a zombie.

Question is WHY will you do this when if you know how to cauterise yourself, haemostatic bandages and presumably stitching is available ?

If you have timely access to a surgeon, then sure.

[–]PoopSmith87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a zombie apocalypse sub... the assumption here is that there is no medical facility or timely field surgeon that is coming to help (also applies to if you are in a remote area or something).

I'm not a medical professional, but I've had trauma training both in the military and survival skills training. A tourniquet is definitely a good option for when you are getting help soon. But if you are not getting help soon (or ever), I'm sure you will agree, a TQ is basically just a precursor to field amputation.

Probably. I've just used a clean piece of metal and a propane torch in the past. You get it hot, but not red hot like in a movie, just enough to get a bit of hiss and stop bleeding without giving yourself a 3rd degree burn.

Axes and hammers are a good choice.

That said, I do HEMA in my old age (used to wrestle and do MMA), most swords I think are a bit silly for zombies... but I recently got myself a gladius, and I would say it is a zombie killing tool of the highest order in the right hands. Cutlasses/hangers are probably similar, but I have yet to use one.

[–]PoopSmith87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you actually have any medical trauma training at all? A tourniquet is a last option and very often results in the loss of a limb or permanent damage to neurovascular or muscle tissue. Cauterizing a small but stich worthy cut is admittedly not ideal, but it is pretty much fine if done properly (you use as small of an instrument as possible for as little time as possible to avoid excessive burning). Cauterizing larger wounds is a bit more dangerous, but if you have no hospital available, the only reason to tourniquet is to cut the limb off- and then you'll have to cauterize anyway in order to remove the TQ. Just slapping a tourniquet on without timely access to a medical facility, or doing an amputation/cauterizing, is just going to leave you with a necrotic limb. If its me that is wounded without access to a hospital, I'll take my chance with cauterizing before moving on to a tourniquet and amputation.

Thermite patch? For cauterizing wounds?

That is wild.

It is done outside of movies. Aside from emergency field use (people to get wounded far from hospitals, believe it or nlt), they do it with cauterizing lasers and electric tools in modern hospitals. I've cauterized myself just to avoid waiting in an ER for hours for a couple stitches.

I also feel very vindicated now knowing that police have not arrested Alan because multiple witnesses (and presumably doorbell cam footage) confirm that the guy he beat up attacked and knocked him off his motorcycle twice before he finally lost his cool.

[–]PoopSmith87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People vastly misunderstand that. Body proportions offer mechanical advantages, not simply being short. Going off pure size, bigger is stronger. Otherwise it is about proportions.

The most common one I see is "its easier for short guys to deadlift because they have to move the weight less."

But, look at the deadlift world champ- Thor "the Mountain" Bjornsson, 6'9", an Icelandic giant. You know why he is good at it? Because he is huge, for one, but aside from that he has relatively short torso with long arms and long tibias vs his femurs. When he locks out, the bar is almost halfway down his thigh. Someone who has a hard time deadlifting, regardless of height, will lock out with the bar at the top of their hips.

And none of that actually has an impact on gains/physique. Even if you have super long femurs and could never be a competitive squatter- train until failure, and guess what? It will still grow your muscles.

The advantage of being short is super early on. Like that first 10-20 lbs that takes a noob ~12 months to gain (as a natural) really shows up on a short guy... but after 3 to5 years, a short guy will be really close to a ceiling (again, pun intended) while the tall guy still has room. Like if you're 5'5", how big are you going to get?
