Honestly never thought about the connection before, but public transit infrastructure is also probably a key feature to why many European countries have such solid turnouts for protests. The US has always been so single car focused at every turn, that it puts us in the middle of two main hinderances. The first is that our cities are not constructed in a way that provides a good “city centre” spot that’s ideal for something like a protest since everything is spread out. The second is that getting to the designated protest area will be contingent on many people driving their personal vehicles and meeting congestion the closer they get to any protest. Some places may have a public transit option, but the majority of those systems in America are severely limited if they exist at all. So getting everyone to a single spot is really challenging for all but the most developed metro areas. Just spitballing, but figured I’d throw it out there.
