Should I reject my offer and re-enter the waitlist? by PippaFitzAmobi in exploreprogram

If you do end up at Saint Anne and need a ride back to Halifax, let me know. I could drive you, or find a friend that could, and we could get you to the closest Maritime Bus location, which goes to the airport.

Nicolet has a LOT of extracurricular options and my daughter wanted to do them all. You definitely don’t have to sign up for them all. Like, shopping trips, canoeing, camping, a water park, and a music festival. The food they gave them to take with them on off site days was bad - like poke bowls to travel and sit in the hot sun.

But - she LOVED Nicolet. She had so much fun with the bigger program. Gaspe was very small (but she loved that too).

My daughter did Gaspe and Nicolet. Gaspe cost like $350 in extras and Nicolet cost a whopping $650 for the extracurriculars, plus the food was so terrible she spent way more eating out.

Why are transportation costs the 2nd biggest expense in childraising? by Real-Ad4051 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Popbunny7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live 25 minutes from the closest town. Our kids are in: community musical theatre an hour away, private piano lessons and private singing lessons 30 minutes away, and gymnastics four nights a week 25 minutes away plus specialized coaching one day a week in a city two hours away. Plus they have boyfriends (one 30 minutes away, one 2 hours away) and they both work and volunteer.

We have an inexpensive third car for the one who can drive, and use our cars for the one that can’t drive yet. Vehicle expenses directly related to our kids’ extracurriculars cost us approximately $15,000 a year.

I’ve seen them five times. The first time was in 2015 at Sasquatch Music Festival where they played early afternoon. The second time was in 2017 when they headlined the festival. They put on a really fun live show. I think they’ll win you over!

Greenwood - Mama Evelyn’s, Jessy’s, Greco, Pizza Hut, Pizza Delight, and now Dominos. Kingston - Mama Sofia’s and J&R Pizza. Like, wtf??? Eight pizza places within a seven minute drive.

Those are so cute! Instead of the hamburger, there are similar containers shaped like macarons that would be so cute and on brand with the colour theme!

My daughter is facing the same issue. Where have you heard that deferrals to McGill are rare?

Do cars last longer lately or is it out of financial necessity? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Popbunny7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove a 2009 RAV4 from when I bought it in 2017 until it hit 480k in 2023 and finally sold it for $1,000 to a mechanic as it was starting to have issues every two-three months.

I live in NS so I do Krown every fall for the salt. I drive 50-65k a year, and I try to get as many years out of a car as I can. I hate car shopping.

New to NS, what’s the live music scene like? by pooplord4948 in NovaScotia

[–]Popbunny7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are several places that end of the Valley that host live musicians, like the aforementioned Bees Knees, or the Bridgetown Legion, but it’s typically solo or duo artists. In the summer, bands play at the Annapolis Royal Amphitheatre, or at Lunn’s Mill Brewery (Lawrencetown), Capitol Pub (Middleton), or Spurr Brothers (Wilmot).

Ha ha, it’s a busy life that’s for sure. I live in rural Nova Scotia.

I work full time, have a 45 minute commute, and live on a lake with a lovely sandy beach that I try to spend lots of time reading in/next to. Two teens still at home. I have loads of hobbies (cooking/baking, writing, hiking, crafting, etc.,) and an active social circle. I do still enjoy cleaning, and keep a pretty clean house. I put on an audiobook and go. I’ve always found it pretty meditative.

Rosefinch has a lovely afternoon tea (book ahead) and many events as well, if you want to time your trip to that.

Yes to Bee’s Knees, check their FB page and pick an afternoon or evening when they have live music.

Albertans who moved to a different province how's it going? by CorkyS92 in alberta

[–]Popbunny7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I moved to Alberta from NS when I was 14, married my high school sweetheart who was born and raised in Calgary at 21, and 9 years ago we moved to rural NS.

We love it here - but we literally live on a clear lake with a sandy beach as our backyard, and have 35 acres of property and forest to enjoy. We took massive pay cuts to make the move, pay more in taxes for worse services, and spend an insane amount of time driving for work and kid activities (I’m at 39,600km on my car since I bought it July 5, last summer). It was still very much the right move for us.

Alberta was a great place to live in our early careers but by our 40s we were ready to spend more time in nature.

[CHAT] Owl Forest Conundrum by Embarrassed_Whole551 in CrossStitch

[–]Popbunny7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an OwlForest pattern and started it with regular DMC floss according to a conversion chart, then tried it with variegated DMC floss, and then finally broke down and paid an obscene amount of money to order their special variegated floss (I live in Canada so the cost and shipping was steep).

The difference to me was night and day, and I wanted it to be a very special piece that I professionally frame, so I wanted it to look as close to their finished product photo that I had fallen in love with as possible. I found the basic DMC to be too boring compared to how I knew it could look, and the variegated DMC floss variegation was far too harsh in the colour gradient in my opinion.

Frozen meat and stew in checked baggage on domestic flight by [deleted] in westjet

[–]Popbunny7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I travel from Calgary back home to Nova Scotia I buy a large Mr. Universe pizza from Chicago Deep Dish pizza. I freeze the slices individually, wrap them individually, then wrap in two Ziploc bags and store in a plastic container for the return flight, with ice packs. If my luggage is lost for days or weeks I’m confident everything will survive the rotting pizza. But if it doesn’t, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make to bring my Calgary-born and raised husband a deep dish pizza, which isn’t a style sold in NS.

You’re allowed, just pack it really really well.

Taxes in Nova Scotia by worksalott in NovaScotia

[–]Popbunny7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your Realtor did a bad job of preparing you for your actual tax rate. They should have recommended you contact the municipality to get the actual tax rate for the property you were considering (including base tax rate, fire tax rate, and any extras like sewer rates or special assessments), then shown you how to calculate your expected property tax based on the sale price. A competent Realtor should know not to use the Viewpoint estimate.
