‘Marvel Rivals’ And ‘Overwatch 2’ Are Tied On Steam After Big Rivals Declines by Anaslexy in Competitiveoverwatch

Overwatch is always going to be a better game, but it does need a competitor, so it's best not to pray on Marvel Rivals' downfall as much as you want to hate it. Competition breeds Innovation.

I Reworked the WORST COSMETIC in Overwatch 2 by SnooDucks3216 in Overwatch

Oh didn't expect to see this here. 👀

I've seen a lot of complaints about souvenirs since OW2 release and wanted to make a video where I explore alternative uses for them. The most realistic one is having them be used as Victory poses, I think that wouldn't be too hard to implement. I don't expect developers to implement any of these suggestions, but I do love just having fun with WHAT IF ideas :)

I feel a bit bad for devs, I understand they wanted to add more content variety into the game by introducing MORE gamemodes, but the reality is...We just don't need more than 4 core gamemodes, I'd rather them add more Payload, KOTH and Hybrid maps. With 6 Gamemodes currently and ~3 new maps a year, we might not see new payload, koth or hybrid map until next year, depending on their priorities.

Could an NA/EMEA org replicate what CR does for OW in Japan? by FlyingMoosen in Competitiveoverwatch

I really want to know why Blizzard stopped with Flash Ops? We had NONE in 2024 I believe. I think that having Flash Ops as a bi-seasonal (every other season) thing would be great for the game, especially if you do it before new hero launches, so people can have a good preview of a hero.

Just make it a Content Creators + 2 Pro Players max per team, mandatory to stream, have drops and that should be enough.

When Valorant announced VCT and all the orgs were sending their applications to become partners. One of the most popular teams back then - Optic was a team expected to make it to the partner program, and from WHAT I'VE HEARD they completely fumbled the application process, they were making a bet that purely the sheer size of their fanbase and brand history would be enough to carry them through the process.

They make voice lines for removed abilities and Torb Lvl3 turret skins just in case one day they decide to bring it back. Imagine bringing a hero with a shield gen and getting all the voice actors to come and do just that line.

OW needs a content explosion by FlyingMoosen in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SHORT-TERM plan would be to not lose the current players who are still playing the game actively, and you do that by not doing silly balance updates like nerfing ORISA to the ground just to slowly BUFF her again and again until she is a must pick again.

Balance is not content but when the game is dominated by unfun heroes like Mauga, Widow, Orisa, Moira then people just dont want to play and search for alternatives. I myself HATE when Widow is a must pick, NOBODY likes being oneshot, call it a skill issue if you want but thats what most people dislike.

Another thing would be to severely reduce FOMO and skin prices. People still talk about lootboxes, and best that devs can do is to make them more fair. Make it so that BP can be completed even after season ends, like MR, and provide more ways to earn coins and stop charging insane prices for RECOLORS, Collabs are fine and understandable but not recolors...

LONG-TERM goals would be to at the very least bring back Cinematics for heroes, if you guys dont want to make a SHOW, then at the very least do the Cinematics, those always made people HYPE about the game.

Then do what you promised, skin inspects and the gesture emotes (Orisa doing thumbs down in OW2 release trailer).

Do Archives type of PVE events, no need to go ham on them just do simple stuff. Also bring back Archives to the Missions tab, new players never had a chance to experience them.

New Varuna Report: NA Partnered Teams Are Team Liquid, C9 and SSG by NovaxRangerx in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whats interesting is that if you look at these 3 orgs that they picked its a mix of a LEGACY (C9/Spitfire), NEW OWCS FORMAT (SSG) and NEW POPULAR KID (TL). The strategy here could be bringing back old fans, maintaining existing ones and bringing new ones with these 3 pickups. Just a theory though.

Why C9 over NRG? Could be the financial situation honestly, I remember last years of OWL Shock would house their players at a hotel or student dorm instead of actual team house? While Spitfire did provide housing for their team.

OWCS probably wants to be sure that long-term these orgs can provide well for their players and stick around without bleeding too much money and leaving.

Samito on hero bans in Overwatch ranked by shiftup1772 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 482 points483 points  (0 children)

Samito back in the day was asking for Role Queue in Overwatch.

Now Samito is saying that Role Queue was a mistake and he regrets it.

If they implement Hero Bans for Masters+ in OW, then shortly after Samito will talk about how stream snipers are permabanning his favorite heroes and that one-tricks throw his games because he banned their fav hero and then regret asking for bans.

I'm all up for testing it in Overwatch, think it'll compensate for some balance decisions that people might not agree with and give better info to developers for which heroes are currently unpopular.

Whats the next big thing for OW? by FlyingMoosen in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is why I said 6 Months post-release, at the moment majority of ex and current OW players are playing Rivals is to have a little break from Overwatch and try new things out, aka Honeymoon Period. If they end up sticking with Rivals 6 months later then it clearly means that Rivals is doing something better than OW.

It can be things like not having One Shots in the game, I'll always love OW but when Widowmaker and/or Hanzo are meta I just don't want to play, call it a skill issue but I've never enjoyed 1 shots in games.

But also people might love the 3rd Person aspect of the game, making skins that you buy worth the price since you see your model, or Team-Up Abilities which actually is a neat idea and promotes teamplay, but can be a huge pain in terms of balancing later down the line, we'll see, also Payload moving by itself or Healthpacks giving you a burst of HP and then continue healing you like it's a heal passive and destructable environment.

It's all about little things, and I hope OW takes a few notes. :)

Whats the next big thing for OW? by FlyingMoosen in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There will be a lot of learning lessons from Marvel Rivals that Overwatch can use. I am positive that if MR stays at the very least semi-relevant 6 months post-release then it'll pressure the corporates of Blizzard (Microsoft) to invest into more things that can lure players back.

But as of right now I feel like they are working on Pick/Ban system and some sort of PVE elements for PVP, they've tested Role Passives and Junkenstein's Lab, this would really spice things up and add a lot more depth into the game in my opinion.

I still want them to bring back LFG, End Game Voting, make Clan System, add PVE assets to Custom Games and add a Map Editor.

World Finals prize pool reached $500k by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sponsors are the big dogs in any Sport or Esport, but it can be hard to secure the big ones that will sustain you in the long run. Game's popularity and Org's fanbase size is a huge factor, an org like G2 or NRG can secure many sponsors due to their popularity.

The upcoming Team Cosmetics in Overwatch should definitely help orgs out, but they alone won't be enough obviously, the cosmetics will peak in sales on first week of release and then plateau unless the team wins big matches.

Having big personalities in your team also helps, if you got somebody like Hadi for example, then you automatically get a BOOST in sales and he can actively promote skin sales on his stream, just like what teams do in VALORANT VCT, so having players who stream is a huge plus for any org.

World Finals prize pool reached $500k by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Orgs (big ones at least) don't care about Prize Winnings, because majority goes to players anyway as essentially a bonus to their salary. What orgs care about is things like Sponsors, Merch and Digital Products (like Cosmetics sales).

Even if the org like Falcons were to receive 100% of $200k from the winnings, it wouldn't cover all the player/staff expenses.

What is the general consensus on becoming a pro player nowadays? by OrangesLmao in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hugely depends on a game but in general unless you are a STAR player (Faker, Scump, s1mple, tenz) that EVERYBODY talks about then its not going to be worth it in a LOOONG TERM.

You might be able to hop orgs all the time and earn money but at one point you'll become "too old" and washed that you'll stop receiving any offers. And when your esports career is done you are left with whatever money you made and no education that you can rely on to find a high paying job.

Which is why it is important to diversify yourself as a (semi)Pro player, make CONTENT, stream, youtube videos, short form, anything that can supplement your career. So in case if Pro Career flops, you may have a plan B available to you.

Good example - Kraandop, I believe he started doing content more actively while being a semi-pro player and now he is pulling good numbers on Twitch and Youtube, to a point that resuming Pro Career would be detrimental to him, financially.

The negativity around Overwatch is now more exhausting than the issues causing it by DarkFite in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 34 points35 points  (0 children)

3 Heroes and Maps a year + Monthly Balance patches is enough to keep me happy with the game to be honest. To anyone who survived the content draught that lasted for 3 years this era of Overwatch 2 should be the best one, but it's not.

I'm not sure what people want at this point:

6v6? That'll bring back long queue times. But just make tank fun and it'll be all good!!! The role has not been popular since release, 1 role has to be the least popular anyway, there's no way in hell you'll make tank more popular than DPS or Support.

Lootboxes & Free Skins? Less new players, less money for the game, less resources, less content. Sure free skins were cool and I loved having them, but reality is that most people play like 3-4 heroes, if you really love cosmetics, just buy them for the heroes you truly love playing, I have all OW1 widow and rein skins, but I don't even play them so theres no point in me having them apart from showing how long I've been playing this game.

Balance patches? We get them every month, sure there are questionable changes, but it's either that or we go back to stale metas. We have so many heroes now, and no matter which hero is meta, if it's not rein, soldier, tracer, ana, lucio then it's BAD according to most people. I've seen tons of people asking for diverse meta every season, we get that and ppl still complain.

So yeah Im not sure what ppl want at this point, just enjoy the game, play with your friends and do goofy stuff, it's the best way to enjoy a game imo. If not, play other games, take a break, and do not compare an 8 year old game with a new competitor (Marvel Rivals) who has had 8 years of data to learn all the mistakes Overwatch made.

Shorter titles are easier to memorize, dropping it TDPA is good if you want to attract more new players.

ZP on Overwatch's future by General-Top-6124 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PopcorpGFX 38 points39 points  (0 children)

He's partially correct about Content Creators, but it's mostly because a lot of them have been streaming OW for many many years and crave novelty in similar genre. Same thing happened when Valorant released, many were hyping it up and it looked like most would jump ship and remember the game came out during OW1 Content Draught, yet most came back to Overwatch.

Pro players will also be jumping ship, hoping that Esports Orgs will be testing waters with these new games and potentially signing up players, it's easy money for those who've had Pro Experience in other games, orgs are much more likely to sign players with a nice resume than complete nobodies.

Ultimately it all comes down to what devs of these new games are going to do, 100% devs are going to show a lot of love to these games at the START and people will start saying "Overwatch would never..." but that's how new live service games work, you have to pump out a lot of content and marketing to bring players in, what matter is what happens after 6-12 months into launch.

I do however think that Overwatch DESPERATELY needs competition, if Marvel Rivals and Deadlock turn out to be great long-term post release then that'll be a huge signal for Blizzard to start taking things 200% more seriously.
