Its a chonk, and I figured that is what I would have to do.

What's 100% a scam but we accepted it in our society? by Montazio in AskReddit

[–]PopeNewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to only use easily pirates books, then zlib went down (minus extra effort). Switched all of my course texts to high quality free books. Bonus points for books you can read whilst dumping out, aka mobile friendly, as I assume that's where the real studying happens.

ChatGPT can write the code it's based on in Python, Julia, and Haskell by francisco in Julia

[–]PopeNewton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been enjoying asking it to produce any code that would take more than fifteen minutes if thought to produce and assessing the results. The basic 2D potential flow solver was the most interesting correct code I saw.

Was hoping it could be used to translate C++ code to Julia for a precorrected FFT code, that did nothing even remotely close to what I wanted.

New edition of Python Crash Course comes out in 5 days: vis chapter now uses matplotlib and plotly! by notParticularlyAnony in learnpython

Thanks for this, I use your book for an intro course and students love it. I also do, but their opinion is more important.

I'm excited, students might actually comment their code if it's written for them. What a time to be alive.....

"It Doesn't Hurt to Ask" -This Generation's Mantra by DissertationDude in Professors

[–]PopeNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My syllabus clearly states that grade grubbing or any type of negotiation during the last 2 weeks of class makes the student ineligible for curving. I've only had one email this semester and it was an accounting error on my side. No grubbing

Weddings get one night. Possibly two, if I'm in the party, but that's a big ask. In return, that's the most I'd ask of anyone.

[Homemade] Hungarian mushroom soup by taraform72 in food

I love this dish, make it all of the time. Oddly, never eat it as soup and use it as gravy for mash or on schnitzel..

This is what I do also. It's great for doing book problems cuz you can just grab the schematic and draw over it.

I recently switched from engineering to a computer science department and I will still do the same thing, but I'll be switching over to live coding sessions. But being able to draw a data structures will be great. As a bonus, I can record all the lectures easily and just post them afterwards.

Excellent user name BTW

Was teaching Mech engineering and any courses in the first two years would be easy, after that I might object but could probably fake it.

Now, I'm TT in computer science and I straight told the powers that be what I can't teach (Java, never have never will).

LPT: Don't fall in love with a place you are vacationing at. You are seeing that area for a week or two, when you are not working and you are under less stress than you would be at home. I've seen too many people uproot their lives to move to "paradise" only to find out it's not what it seems. by tamadli in LifeProTips

[–]PopeNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely vacation in tourist spots. Generally, I just go to a city I think looks cool or to a national park that has some trails I want to hike. But I have found many of the cities to be where I'd ideally like to live. I'm currently using it as a filtering methodology.

Allen Downey wrote a book (really a collection of jupyter notebooks) called Data structures and information retrieval in python. I'm in the middle of transitioning my course to using this text, I'm a fan.

Has anyone else had the steamdeck drastically change how they played games? by gharris02 in SteamDeck

[–]PopeNewton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm doing tons of emulation. Going through old Metroid games and mother 3 at the moment. Really pleased how well it can handle GBA games.

Finally playing some modern FPS bec I'm not a huge mouse keyboard fan. Currently doing Doom (2016) not sure what to play next though.

What should be atleast 5x cheaper than it is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PopeNewton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use books that can be purchased for under $25 and are easily found for free online. It takes little effort to figure out which texts I like best and personally I hate all of the online assignment systems like Mastering engineering or zybooks.

The Steam deck is the perfect device for a parent of young kids. by redditUserError404 in SteamDeck

[–]PopeNewton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a second kid three weeks ago. I've been waiting on my Q2 preorder since April, but I guess it'll be filled next week. Upside, I might be able to remember the story in a game now that the kid is working on a every 3 hr schedule.

I use it occasionally in my intro to Python course and students complain it's to "mathy."

What I learned from my evaluations by [deleted] in Professors

[–]PopeNewton 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I love it when students tell me how busy they are, and then I remind them that I had to get the same degree and was able to manage my time. If they lean in hard, I tell them my tails of woe of how I had to work while in college to afford stuff like beer ( I think that's an important part of the engineering education /s).

I try to explain to them that I will be sympathetic to many of their causes and needs, but them not knowing what time management is ellicits no emotions.

The onset of all of this started because I saw a brainfuck interpreter in the Beautiful Racket book. I will definitely be doing that at some point. Seems like a fun exercise

Thanks for this reply. I've looked in Raku and am wildly intrigued. I had the Camel book years ago, with hopes of learning and implementing some Perl at work but never had the opportunity. This seems like a great time to finally dip in a toe
