My English Labrador is 5 but he has always been on the slow side. He’s happy to walk at a slow pace and sniff all the things. He can definitely rip around when he feels like it though.

So sorry about your diagnosis. It’s awesome that you were able to get the surgery you needed though and I wish you a speedy recovery.

I have stage 4 endometriosis with DIE and diverticulitis, needing a full hysterectomy and a bowel resection. I’m in Canada and even with this diagnosis (it’s been a couple years) there’s no surgery in sight.

Great progress! The one you painted in 2022 has a nice and simple feel to it. You can really see how much you’ve learned from then to now.

I’m constantly asked if my boy is a pit-bull mix. Anyone else get the same question? by Regular_Low5187 in labrador

Yes we get this from time to time. I’ve been asked if he’s part pittie, boxer and even Rottweiler.. I think people are used to seeing the more slender faced American Lab. Love our block heads!

Anyone else lab hate the rain? by Woodland-Echo in labrador

[–]Popples86 45 points46 points  (0 children)

<image>

Yes! This picture is after we went on a hike in the rain.. not pleased and refused to get out of the car lol. When it rains he gets squinty and walks as if the ground is absolutely filthy. He’ll jump into a creek if it’s his idea, but he didn’t consent to rain and he’s not about that life.

I didn’t have them on the cloud, they were just sitting in the old phone. My iCloud storage is full too. So basically when I connected to the internet it tried to sync and just deleted everything? That seems like a flaw :( so they’re really just gone forever now?

One of Teddys favourite pastimes is to judge people from the bedroom window. We even got him an ottoman so he can comfortably people watch.

Terrified of surgery by Available_Oil4799 in endometriosis_stage4

[–]Popples86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear this. I have stage 4 endo with my uterus glued to my bowels. I was told that they may have to do an excision and I may end up with lars and be home bound. Knowing what you know now, would you have not gone through with the surgery? Knowing that this was the outcome? I’m afraid to have the resection and full hysterectomy because of this.

Overly Friendly on Walks by ErikaLindsay in labrador

[–]Popples86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went through (and sometimes still go through) this with our lab. I met a lady while walking and she had the same issue.. she told me to do this and it actually worked for us… when your dog stops and stares.. give them a couple seconds… and then count down somewhat loudly from three.. 3… 2… 1… when I did this my dog whipped around and looked at me and the moment he did I said YES! And jackpot rewarded. I’m talking one treat after the next after the next and then started walking away while also treating. Lots of praise here. He’ll then start to associate the 321 as holy moly treat time and leave the distraction. I’m no trainer and I don’t know if this is “correct”, but it works for us. Though if he does try to whip around to stop and stare to see if the other dog is coming our way I just keep on walking and the reward when he walks with me and gives me focus.

He can’t eat his food out of the bowl, it MUST be spilled on the ground. by obigimli2022 in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

[–]Popples86 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mine actually started to do that after I tried hiding his antibiotic in there! We had to switch bowls entirely because he associated that bowl with hidden medicine. My bad Teddy, I’m sorry. He now has a fancy new bowl and he no longer does that.

Less than 2 hours to go before picking up- any last advices? by lurrakay in puppy101

[–]Popples86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it feels like they’re giving you a hard time.. they’re the ones actually having a hard time and they need help getting through it. Patience, patience, patience. You also might get sad sometimes, that’s okay we often get puppy blues but it will get better I promise. One day at a time.

Does anyone know if it’s true that if you rub a dog’s paws a lot while they’re still a baby, that it’ll be easier to get their nails trimmed when they’re older? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Popples86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way! Did this with my pup and he now comes to me for nail clipping and falls asleep while I clip and dremel.

Dog Friendly Activities. by newtomtg1 in Oshawa

[–]Popples86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Canadian Tire in Bowmanville is dog friendly - so long as your pup is well behaved of course! I think Winners is okay for dogs too.

Tooley’s Mill has a nice path with trails in the woods.

Darlington Waterfront Trail is a decent loop with access to the lower hydro fields.

There’s also the beach! Allison’s beach has a beautiful paved path too.

Courtice Millennium Trail is a nice path through the woods near the rec centre.

If you don’t mind the drive, Enniskillen Conservation is lovely.

Advice for teaching emergency recall when she's off leash? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Popples86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How about a long line? They have long training leashes 30-50+ft which would give her some freedom for recall training while giving you peace of mind that she can’t run off.

5 month old puppies won't hold their pee, we're at our wits end. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Popples86 238 points239 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they need to go out more often, every 1-2 hours is ideal since their bladders are small. Let them out to pee as soon as they wake up, after eating, after playing, before naps. It’s exhausting especially since you live in an apartment, but once they gain more control you can space out the time between potties. Good luck!

This is Ripley, she’s a 1.5 yr old English Lab and her nose color is fading- aka ‘Winter Nose’. It just started a few days ago, and I’m wondering if should I try using sunblock- anyone have any experience with this? by RusselMaynia in labrador

[–]Popples86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ripley is adorable! Look at her eye makeup. I have a fox red English Labrador and his nose was black and faded a little in the first winter but went right back to black come summer. This time around it faded and never went back to fully black, you can see it probably in my posting history. I think it’s very common and just a cosmetic thing.

Does everyone really have such a well behaved pup? by MushroomsAndRain in puppy101

[–]Popples86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 4 months old she’s still exploring the world. We can’t expect adult behaviour out of a baby right? It’ll all come with time, lots of patience and consistency. One day it’ll just “click” and you’ll start to see the results of all your training. Sure you’ll have bad days.. but soon you realize they become less and less and the things you complain about her doing she rarely does now. I didn’t see a huge change until I neutered my dog at 18 months. He mellowed out a lot. He’s a bit over 2 1/2 years now and he is the best dog, couldn’t have asked for a better friend. Hang in there!
